A damn fine way to go out. One of the worst fast money playings ever and a heartbreaking exit for the show's host - to the point he immediately walked offstage as soon as he closed the show.

I can't imagine how hard that was for Ray, the way they axed from feud was pretty cold, they were already taping new episodes with Richard Dawson while Ray was finishing up his run. Wasn't his fault the ratings were going down, he even got nominated for the Emmy that year. Beyond that he was in financial trouble, about to lose his house, had trouble finding work, he and his wife were going through a divorce, his car accident which reportedly left him in pain for the remainder of his life.

I think what happened towards the end, Ray didn't want to be a game show host and longed for an acting or comedy gig. But it never really came. I hear he did do a pilot for a talk show but it wasn't picked up. Essentially I think he got typecasted as a game show host and in the mid 90s game shows weren't "hip" anymore. So the jobs were few and far between. He did do family challenge but apparently he hated it and just did it because "it was a gig".

@Cut. TV The show was dying and Harvey revived it, even bringing it above Wheel of Fortune in 2015. A lot of humor nowadays is considered "dirty" so it is just getting with the times. Cards Against Humanity is a good example of this after becoming the number one card game in 2011... Family Feud is obviously doing something right because the show was heading down the toilet. The target audience is no longer people like you, so if you don't like it, don't watch it. But don't call it a "shell of what it once was" when Harvey has been doing a phenomenal job keeping the show relevant.

He called the station to listen to the entire game on hold over the phone from California. When they picked up after the game, he was in tears. That game was a huge deal to the locals. Early on, when he first became Family Feud host, he was actually at the station, and called my wife and wished her a happy birthday at work. same thing happened to me 6 years ago. With the perspective of time the best advice I can offer is to think of your life as a book that you're writing. Someone closed that chapter on you, but you still have the power to turn the page and write new chapters. When Ray gave up he allowed his story to be written by others. Don't give them the power to occupy your thoughts. Looking back, the best revenge I got was never having to see them or speak to them again. That gives me the power to keep that chapter closed, on my terms. It's your life and your story -- write it how you want it written.

I feel so bad for Ray Combs. He was a great host and was my favorite one, but CBS decided he wasn’t going to be the host anymore so they could bring back Dawson, which didn’t improve ratings. The host wasn’t the problem. The show just wasn’t popular anymore because Wheel of Fortune premiered. The show was tired and needed a facelift, not a new host. Sadly, he was in a terrible car accident that affected him for the remainder of his life and caused massive depression which led to him divorcing his wife and later took his own life. I still remember the article about him in People Magazine where it showed his ex wife holding their son looking broken.

It wasn't CBS who decided that Combs needed to stop hosting the late 80s era Family Feud, it was the producers at Mark Goodson Productions on behalf of distributor All American Television (who would later acquire MGP from Mark's son Jonathan) who was threatening to stop distributing Feud unless if changes were made because of low viewership at the time. In an October 1996 issue of People Magazine is an article about Ray Combs’s family and the deep debts he left behind. A stand-up comedian who knew Ray said he didn’t manage his money, that he wrote a lot of checks to people in his hometown of Hamilton, Ohio. He funded two comedy clubs in that town, which may not be large enough to support one. In short, Ray spent money as fast as he made it. So when he was kicked to the curb from Family Feud, he had no safety net. Sure, he had a wife and six kids, but if he had managed his money, he could have held on until he found more work. I also think Ray should have found someone to help him deal with the ruthlessness of the entertainment business.

The reason Ray "left the show and didn't talk to no one" was they staged it where Ray rode (I believe in a Camaro) off the studio lot after the credits finished. While Ray wasn't happy with the show being cancelled I heard that after he left the stage they cut and he went back out and said bye to everyone in the studio. Did Combs have just the two comedy clubs in Cincy, or more elsewhere? For people slamming on his ex-wife, its worth remembering that near the end, Combs' behavior became erratic, worrisome even in the home. Banging one's head bloody against a wall is not far removed from lashing out physically against others. Milder expressions of this behavior may have happened in their marriage before they separated. When children are involved, their safety has to be the priority, no matter how much one loves their spouse. For people who have been committed to a hospital in his situation, shouldn't it be basic safety not to have a clothes bar in the closet?

Two things about the fast money round. If "car" was the number one answer for the fifth question, I'm a bit surprised that "truck" wasn't used interchangeably (i.e. I felt that they should have been given the points). Secondly, the producers or whomever is in charge of the you've-duplicated-the-answer buzzer screwed up when the second contestant said "husband" - if that netted zero points then it clearly was being used interchangeably with "boyfriend." That being said, the second fast money player unfortunately seemed so unprepared that even if he was asked to give another answer for the fourth question, it likely wouldn't have made a difference. And yeah, RIP Ray Combs. As great as Richard Dawson was, Ray Combs will always always always be my favourite Family Feud host.

The producers wanted to boost the ratings so to that they brought back Dawson. The ratings were even worse than before and the show went off the air until 1999 when the modern version was born

Wow I've never seen this version of FF with bullseye round. Original was always the best. "I feel so tall" 😂 i swear hes not the 5'8 claimed and more like 5'3, cause so many episodes of him towered by everyone. You'll find his and other of the host's episodes on Pluto TV (FF channel) watching now..
