This show absolutely found my soul! My Mom was one of the most vital, alive people I will ever know. She taught me to fish, to clean fish, to clean ducks and pheasants. She required all of our family to learn how to cook, we were each assigned a night of the week where the kitchen was our responsibility. I learned to plan a meal for our family, get that meal on the table and leave the kitchen ready for the next user. We lost Mom to dementia in 2020, it was difficult to watch her descent and I miss her every day. Hang on to what you can Kimi. It is hard for sure, but you and yours will capture some moments in this end time that you will carry in your heart forever. Thank-you for making this episode, it was a conduit to great memories for me. I wish you all of the peace the world can deliver on this tough journey. Taking parents to the end is brutal and incredibly important.

I just lost my grandfather to dementia. He taught me how to shoot a gun, fish, clean squirrels, deer and fish and taught me how to be a man. He was a paratrooper raised by a WW2 vet and his funeral is the 20th. Grandparents are the gift that will truly last a lifetime.

Kimi, thank you so much for this story and experience. My old man passed away 3 years ago, he was salt water fly fishing guide and seeing you on that boat with your dad brought back so many fond memories. Enjoy every moment and every bite of fish with your friends and family. Its all worth it in the end.

This episode brought a tear to my eye thinking about my mom and her love of fishing. She's gone now but 2 years ago we took 2 offshore charters in 3 days out of my home state of SE Florida. She reeled in fish like a champ at 74 years young. RIP mom.

Absolutely amazing video!!! Took me right back to sitting in a boat with my dad, on a lake in northern Ontario that we fished annually. Fishing was very slow so we drifted back toward the landing at the end of the day. As fate would have it we both hook into a pair of walleye, the last fish my dad ever caught. 2 days later it was time to head home and Pops didn't wake up. He passed in his favourite place in the world, couldn't have wrote a better script. Thanks Kimi and cherish every moment with your folks, it looks like they taught you well

My dad is gone now and my mother is 80. I long for the days when he and i would go hunting and fishing. I spend time with my mother wishing time would stand still for just a while. And in the mean time im trying to pass on to my kids what they gave to me. Thank you for doing this and showing we are all in the same position in life.

I feel like these episodes capture the heart of what Meateater has been trying to share from the start, but this is where they truly got it. The hunting episodes with Steve are what captured our attention in the beginning with the respect and traditions handed down, but this series with Kimi, and the other Meateater colaberations, like the ones with Daniel Prewett, are the culmination of their real message; which is family, tradition and the meaning of life itself.

Absolutely love Swimmie Kimi!! After watching the original Kimi episode last year, I decided to try spearfishing out this winter. I've been trying to get in diving shape and (since I live in AK) I've been practicing breathing control on the couch! Anyway, it's going to be an adventure and we'll see what happens, but thanks for the inspiration for spear fishing and especially for the glimpse into your family life! Aloha!

Great video. Both my parents have passed dad at 58 and mom at 62. No one is ever really ready to step into what you are currently, but it happens sometimes sooner and sometimes later. The best advice I can give you is to do what you can, even with your kids and their grandparents. Leave yourself nothing on the future to look back on and say "I wish I would've...". Getting out with your dad was the perfect example of what I'm talking about. Sometimes it's challenging to find someone to be with your mom and your children during the time with your dad. It was good for everyone's soul in the end.

If paradise had a face this would be it. Prayers for your mother and your family. A few years back I lost my mom to dementia. I cared for both of my grandmother's as they died from cancer. Couldn’t be happier to watch this! Exactly what we’ve been craving from Kimi, every single bit of it. For an avid MeatEater fan (one of the 4 women?! 😂) who is also still a daddy’s girl, a hunter when I can sneak out, and a mama of 3 little ones that cooks at home 100% of the time, this was just pure joy. I loved your instinct to put the greens under and beans and all of those extras that come into play in Mexican cuisine just straight onto the fish, that was a lightbulb moment for me!
