They didn't retcon. Joe told a lie, and plus I assume that the flashback was more of a joke. Usually with the show jokey flashbacks aren't supposed to be taken literally. A retcon would be something like Peter going to college in one episode and getting a doctorate and then in another episode wishing he went and gotten a degree, like writing out the story as if it never existed.

Bt outside of the "brackets" you listed, Brian was the least of the evils. But Family Guy isn't the only one with characters bereft of character. There isn't a single worthy creature in Rick and Morty, Bob's Burgers or any of the other late evening fare on CN. Seems that's what the audience goes for.

Now it seems as though we the viewers are the only ones who kow he is a dog.. When it got to the point where he has a human son.. well, that's stretching it beyond artistic license. But then again, Family Guy is designed to make absolutely no sense at all... and the crowds love it. Not sure what Fox-Disney will do with A. S. They'll lose some revenue if they axe it on "moral high ground".. and there's some even raunchier stuff on in the really wee hours. (I work nights. They have it on in the cafeteria)

Ah, this was when Family Guy was at its best. It's a shame that Seth MacFarlane decided to take the show in the direction of shock humor in later seasons, instead of still using hilarious and cleverly written dialogue and jokes (such as Joe's backstory in this video). Nowadays, the show is just not that funny anymore. Don't get me wrong, I am a longtime Family Guy fan, but prefer the older episodes over the newer ones.

It's not more so Seth macfarlane it's the other producers. Seth is involved in the show but mostly just reviews cutaways and voices the characters. They did say that some of it was because they ran out of ideas or didn't know what to do (for example the reason Meg is the black sheep is because almost all of the writers are male and they didn't know how to write for a female)
