NASCAR Hall of Fame driver and 1983 Cup Series champion Bobby Allison died at his home in Mooresville, North Carolina, this past weekend. He was 86.
During his illustrious career, Allison won 85 races, including a controversial race at Bowman Gray Stadium that he was recently awarded before his death. In this clip from PRN's Fast Talk, NASCAR on NBC analyst Kyle Petty gives his thoughts on what it was like growing up in the midst of the Richard Petty-Bobby Allison rivalry and how close his family was to the Allisons despite the fierce on-track competition.
Kyle shares stories about growing up watching Bobby and Donnie Allison race against his father, Richard, and being close friends with Davey Allison. Kyle also tells a funny story about the time he qualfied ahead of Allison at Daytona only to find himself behind the legendary racer early in the race. #NASCAR #BobbyAllison #KylePetty

No one was handed more hardship and pain in life than Bobby Allison, and he never let it show. He was tough as nails. Its so cool that Bobby and Richard Petty were fierce competitors, but the families were great friends.

Kyle, I had the privilege of spending some time with you, your father and Bobby and Donnie at Talladega a few years ago. You guys are class acts! Thanks for the memories.

It is hard to find words to tell how much i thought of Bobby Allison. As a race car driver, he was arguably as good as any. He would race on short tracks when he wasn't racing NASCAR. He showed so much class, even when faced with more tragedy than any one man should have to endure. Bobby, you will be missed, but your memory will live forever.

As a youngster, growing up in the 60's, I couldn't decide who I liked better. Richard Petty or Bobby Allison. One week it was one of them, the next it was the other. The only place I ever actually saw them race was the old Richmond Fairgrounds, and I suppose Richard won more there than Bobby did, but man did they put on a show. Bobby, you will be missed. And Kyle, thanks for your stories. You're a little younger than I am, but you take me back to growing up in the 60's. I remember seeing your dad's truck parked in front of a motel near the old Richmond Fairgrounds Racetrack once. Just a box truck with 43 on the side and a trailer. Man, I tought that was coolest thing I'd ever seen. A REAL race team. Or maybe it was a show car, there was a big Goodyear store near there and I remember having seen your dad's car there. Were there even show cars in the early 70's? Never mind. It doesn't matter. Thanks to you, your dad, the Allison's and all the rest from "back in the day."
