Several years ago, in the 90's, there was a deaf man walking along the T&P(UP) track in Jefferson, TX that was struck by a train after he stepped onto the tracks as the train got to him. The train came upon him from his back and the crew blew the horn for the crossing then for him but he did not hear the train. The speed limit there was only 35 mph because of a 10 degree curve. Here in Arp, TX a member of the school board crossed the UP track about 100 feet from a crossing and right in front of a pair of locos running light and got hit after emerging from between two large bushes. He did not have his hearing aides on. His body was propelled about 150 feet.

@pennypay1
@pennypay1 4 жыл бұрын
Amish never wear patterned-print clothing, not even in the more permissive Orders. I'm almost positive those were Mennonites or some fundamentalist splinter group. But it's true that the high speed of the passenger train (compared to them likely assuming a passenger train isn't much faster than most freight trains) threw them off. They probably weren't aware that walking on tracks is trespassing and punishable.

I certainly say I have learned to stay off the tracks keep a good distance from them (in case of derailment) never wear headphones, don't text, make phone calls or do online activities while walking near them. Keep your eyes & ears open at all times when near the tracks. Because every time a train came by I saw it b4 I heard it. 1 time I had to tell some kids to get off the tracks because a train was coming.

I remember when I was little, I'd go to my grandparents house in Lafayette, LA, and sit on the railroad tracks behind their house, throwing rocks into the gulley below. I didnt think anything about it, because even if a train did come, the brodge over the gulley was old and rickety, and the trains took 10 minutes, maybe more, from sighting to crossing. But I won't try to justify it. It was wrong, and I know that now. But a fast line like this, especially the volume, can be very, very unpredictable. Never risk it.
