Although I have never followed his career and stumbled on this video by accident, I do remember seeing Mr. Garcia on a surf reality show where I became a fan based on his personality. This is really sad but more importantly I pray and send my love to him and his family. I wish him a full recovery and overcoming his depression.

I really feel for him - he wanted to leave the World, and now he can't make that decision for himself and that doesn't sit right. I really hope he recovers to the point where he can have some independence and do whatever he wants.

First video I saw Sunny in was Filthy Habits back in 88 or so. As a combat vet I’ve had a few close friends take their lives and all that does is transfer the pain to those around you. I’m glad he survived and hope he recovers but now he’s forever changed and I know that’s not how he wanted to live, without surfing.

I feel its poor form of the family to not allow access to Sunny. Its like they are ashamed of him. Which leads me to believe that Sunny suffered so much leading up to this incident. You'd think the family would drop the pride and accept Sunny exactly as he is but nope, still with the pride which means Sunny will continue to suffer. I hope they change their minds and realize that mental and emotional health supercedes any title any day. I wish Sunny peace and ability to look after himself. Older people need support too, especially older males who are taught to be 'stong' and 'tough' because Sunny suffered and its all real, wake up family, Sunny is still valid and included. Even the Instagram page for Sunny is now 'private'!

I remember an interview he gave where he talked with pride about not talking any medication for his depression. He could have swallowed his pride and taken medication. For his family if nothing else. There is zero shame in having a physiological problem in your brain, that can be treated with medication. It’s no different than any other treatable condition. Two pills that had minimal side effects changed my life, and prevented me from hurting the people I love as a result of the symptoms of depression. It takes a while to find the right medication, it is very frustrating when it doesn’t work right away, but Christ, if medication, prescribed by a doctor, with side effects that don’t hold a candle to the misery of depression can possibly help and even change your life, what excuse is good enough not to try? And keep trying. And if that person has a family, try and try and try and try......It’s insane. Hawaii has far too much toxic masculinity. It’s sad and it’s embarrassing. I am terribly sorry for those who love him. I hope to God he recovers and learns a ton from all of this. He could be a real hero to so many people, in an even more meaningful way in his second go round. He has so much going for him, and he can be so loving and engaging. He deserves to live life as the person he truly is, instead of living with the belief that depression was a personal failing, or that he was a bad person, when he simply had a treatable condition that went untreated.

Sunny was a bully AKA moke. He surfed well, but it doesn't excuse his reputation of fighting when things didn't go his way. I've seen this about the surfing community in Hawaii. People ignore drug abuse, spouse and child abuse, having multiple children without being a man enough to marry and keep a promise..they only talk about what a great surfer the deceased was. You have to address those things if you don't want the keikis to repeat the evil cycle. I have yet to see a local man have the guts to bring up stuff like this in a constructive way. It's a terrible double standard that brings shame to Hawaii and Hawaiians.

My lasting impressions of Garcia came from watching that reality surfing show twenty years ago which clearly revealed him to be a violent, bullying thug preying on anyone who incurred his displeasure. He looked like a simple minded orangutan when he was threatening men in a bar for the crime of looking at his wife dancing with a friend. Then, arguing with other surfers in a car, he leaned in and punched the driver in broad daylight, seemingly unworried about consequences as local police would never arrest him. His body language, facial expression and commentary gave off the vibe of a swaggering caveman capable of little more than impulsive aggression when he wasn't on a surfboard. His present situation is obviously sad for his family but there are a multitude of better candidates for sympathy in this world.
