Thought this was so cool I had to make two of these…awesome! After a few months I noticed my roots were super long and getting caught up in the pump impellers…so I used PVC to create a frame that sits just above the pump…used some extra window screen laying around (not metal screen) to cover it up, secured with zip ties. Now the roots stay out of the sump. I also made PVC cages that sit on top of each cover, and twine to help vining plants grow upward. Wrapped those cages with Mylar sheets from Amazon, added a couple of grow lights - and suddenly I’m a farmer. I have no idea what I’m doing but this is fun. All because of you three guys, thank you!

Used a very similar system for cloning. Found the most important part to these type of systems (well at least for cloning..imagine growing would benefit), is plugging the pump into a Repeat Cycle Timer/repeating timer/whatever else they call them. It turns the power (pump) On for a certain period of time, and cuts the juice for a certain period of time (ex. ON 1 minute/OFF 3 minutes or some can be set for custom times) The roots need time breath/dry out a bit....when I made a few DIY bubble cloner/aerocloners in the past, would always had mixed results. Some would sprouts root, but many of the stems would rot and turn to mush. After plugging into a repeating timer...no problems.

I have seen where folks add some bleach or hydrogen peroxide...I would start with just the timer first and try the chemicals if that don't work (ya might not need them) Happy grows!

great video, thanks! A few questions remain: 1) How often should the pump run, and for how long? Also, how large should the pump be in GPM (Gallons Per Minute)? 2) What nutrients should be added to a ten gallon batch of solution? 3) What lighting is required, and how long should the light be on every day?
@FamilyPlotGarden5 жыл бұрын
We run the pump all the time. It is 400GPH and is rated for about 25 watts. It both sprays the roots and oxygenates the water in the process. We used General Hydroponics Flora Series nutrients but there are many options out there. Watch this video for information about how much we put in: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYrVhYeCl9FmiNE We use a large window for the primary light source. With large plants like tomatoes it takes a lot of grow lights (too many) to provide enough light. We do have a two smaller lights we use to supplement the non-window side of the plant. As for how long it should be on, that depends on what you are growing and the stage of life of the plant. Newly germinated plants can have the light on 24/7. After that it depends on what you are growing. Most plants grow best with a dark period every day.

Yep.. Those holesaws are made to cut holes in metal so when used regularly (in forward) makes lots of grit.. Since we are cutting thin plastic we don't have to "cut" the hole out and simple friction (reverse) will melt our hole..

You will need to use a hydroponic nutrients. They are available from many places online. We use the Flora Grow series of nutrients from General Hydroponics, but there are many other options out there. Here is the video of us changing the solution kzbin.info/www/bejne/nYrVhYeCl9FmiNE You will need to change the water and nutrients from time to time but that depends on what plants you are growing. When the plants have drunk about half of the nutrient solution it is time to change it. This could be every couple days for large tomato plants in hot sun or less than once a month for lettuce in cool conditions. It all depends on the plant.

For putting holes in plastic bins, if you can find pieces of metal the right size (like an old garden hose for your drain) that you can heat up, it only takes a few seconds of heat with a propane torch, and the hot metal pushes right through the plastic with just a little force, making a nice neat hole with no mess.

Hello from East Tennessee... I just stumbled across this video. Production quality is magnificent as one would expect from a PBS production. I know this video is 3 years old now, but I wanted to bring up a flaw in content for those like me who are still stumbling across the videos. while you did an excellent job of covering the how to of the DIY project, you really failed to mention anything about a nutrient solution for the plants. one has to then chase down a second video on nutrients or refer to their own notes and links to information on nutrient solutions.
@wetwerk21784 жыл бұрын
This video is intended more as an intermediate video than a beginner's video. There is a companion video available on Family Plot's channel for on how to fill this tote with nutrients. There are hundreds of nutrients brands, so this video was less about how to use nutrients in hydro and all about how to build a more advanced hydroponic unit than your standard store bought systems, and cheaper. Again, the aim was not based on plant feeding, but building them a habitat for the rhizosphere. Thanks!

This is improved from the method I used previously. I figured I would look for a different build for shits and giggles. This looks more effective but there is a couple important details you left out. If you pick one of those frosted or transparent totes, it will grow algae and compete with your plants. Make sure it's dark in there. Another is that power cord is a serious fire hazard. It will be fine like that if you make a loop (aquarist here lol). Water runs down hill, so make sure there is an upward angle in your power cord so it cannot leak on your receptacle. I cannot stress how important that is, I've seen nightmare posts in my fish groups. Other than that, thanks for the new ideas!

I say INcomplete. What about feeding the plants with some form of liquified nutrition, and what's actually going on inside the tub? Also, what's the purpose or why bother with a drain? Is an inside grow light needed? How long do the plants remain in this container, and are they needing to be transplanted to a larger device? Lots of unanswered questions or vague assumptions.

hi guys, some things you skipped over.... #1....these systems will build up HEAT, i use a sealed 2 liter soda bottle of frozen water every 6-12 hours depending on time of year, to keep the water in the LOW 70's(sealed so it doesn't dilute the hydro grow formula) i also keep a waterproof thermometer(digital) in it, so i can monitor the water temp from the outside #2....you need to add hydrogen peroxide (capful a gallon) to prevent the bacteria from growing slime on everything the water comes into contact with in your system..... #3....if you use just water, your plants will starve to death, find a liquid plant food that WONT clog your sprinklers( even then you STILL need to bottle brush this system(just like a rifle cleaning) EVERY MONTH(or sooner) to insure proper sprinkler flow(that means COMPLETE disassembly, INCLUDING HEADS,(blow thru them to make sure they are not plugged up. #4...start small, get to know how these systems actually work in YOUR conditions, i actually use a 5 gallon bucket(for the last decade or so) and it fits my needs perfectly, i have 3 different lids i use with 6-12-18 sites, and it keeps down the cost of putting nutrients in 2 gallons of water as opposed to 10 gallons of water......cheers!
@wetwerk21786 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your advice, but we've been very aware of these issues. #1 This is a common solution to a problem most people don't expect. However, we've used this system out doors in the late summer heat with great results. The tote does get quite warm, but it doesn't hurt the plants in the long run. Tomatoes and squash and such love to grow and can take a heck of a beating from all sorts of events before it starts to revolt on your abuse. Our tomatoes (see our facebook site) went from "planting" to harvest in less than 45 days with this system. All out back of our warehouse getting the full rays of the sun. At one point the plants we so large it seemed like we filled the tote up with fresh water every day until feeding day. That's when we decided to gravity feed them on demand, but that's a different lesson... moral of the story: just grow with it. If you're not growing the west's favorite crop, you're not going to need too much specialization in the root zone. #2 DO NOT use hydrogen peroxide on hydroponic applications to fight bacteria and fungus. We cannot stress this enough. To give your plants a happy life they NEED bacteria and fungi to hang out in their roots and help them get access to food. Sterilizing the environment weakens their immune response and makes them prone to illness and susceptible to harsh environments. Instead of microbial genocide, introduce beneficial microbes to your root zone. These are easily found under many brand names. Gardeners the world over are well aware of the application and benefits of microbes. At our shop we usually just throw whatever free samples we have this week at the plants, but it we were to go shopping we'd probably pick up a bottle of Orca or Great White and use them religiously with every nutrient change. Beneficial microbes will out compete harmful microbes help the roots thrive, and therefore the plants will thrive. They aren't expensive, and you just mix them in like any other plant food. #3 This was a demo on building certain hydroponic system, not an introduction to hydroponics. Everyone knows plants must eat? Even a plant in soil will eventually need amendments to that soil in order to continue to live. The art of hydroponics is essentially "soil amendments" given from the beginning and until the end of the plants life. Tailored to its specific needs. Fine tuned. All live must feed. General Hydroponics is the brand of plant food we promote the most as it's the brand most likely to be available in every major city and every hydroponic supply shop. Indeed, there are countless other brands that will provide excellent results in systems like this. Avoid organic brands until you know they won't clog the sprayers. There are lots of organics to find that will work, but some will cause trouble in the tiny holes, so be aware. #4 This tote is simply one incarnation of the SPRAYER design. The tote is the vessel. The sprayers are the important part. If you do this setup right (the tote is a hyrbid setup for beginners or hobbyist going to the next level in hydroponics) you can use minute amounts of water compared to a DWC. I've had my 9 year old nephew build a single pole sprayer into a 5 gallon bucket with a 250GPH pump. His cucumber plant gave off nearly 100 cucumbers and was the envy of the extended family. Never underestimate the power of extreme oxygenation! Thanks again!

Seek thee out, "Active Aqua 400 gph pump". Amazon. eBay. Hydro stores near you. Any hydroponic pump of the same GPH (or similar) rating will have the correct threaded coupler. Using a standard fountain pump will most likely have a slip connection and not work with the pvc connector. Avoid the hardware stores' fountain pumps. Use hydroponic pumps.
