1970's, I was a kid in the area near Philadelphia. K-Tel Record t.v. commercials played 10 second sound bites of the songs. End of the World was one that I heard a few seconds of.. for years. The name Skeeter seemed odd but as I became a man in my 50's & my wife died, the song became something other than a sound bite. I realized that whoever wrote End of the World probably wasn't inspired by teenaged love-gone-wrong. I am a Beatles fan but love most music. I learned to play End of the World on guitar. Skeeter had a lovely voice, southern twang when she sang the word 'end'. Nostalgia is painful & dear.

It's hard to fight back tears whilst listening to Skeeter's many beautiful songs, with that sweet sweet, innocent-sounding voice of her's, and I'm certainly not exactly the "sensitive type," either. I wasn't born until 1977, but I remember hearing the song "the End of the World," from time to time on US-99.5 (the main country music station in Cook County, Illinois/the Chicago-area), and I couldn't remember who it was by, and luckily I had a notification from one of the many "vintage country music" KZbin channels that I subscribe to, and there was a video with the songs of several different artists in a 45 minute/hour-long mix of classic country music, with "The End of the World" being the 1st song in the mix...the artist and song names were not listed in this particular video nor were they in the video description, so I had to do some internet searching to find out the artist of this beautiful song that I have always loved...I didn't even know the name of the song, but I took a couple of educated guesses, based on the lyrics, and I quickly found out the name of the song, and that it was by Skeeter Davis, so I've been "binge-listening" to here music for the past month. Furthermore, I've played many musical instruments throughout my life, and I've been teaching myself how to play the accordion for the last couple years (off and on), and I must say that this song *alone,* with its beautiful chord progressions, have really, *REALLY* helped me to better familiarize myself with the "button side" of my accordion 🪗; I basically understand how it works, but I'm still trying to visualize it in my mind -which is difficult to do, when you have to do it "by feel," unlike with piano or bass guitar (or just guitar, for that matter) as I have been playing piano and bass since the early 1980s and early 1990s, respectively, and while I *can* read music, 99% of the time I play by ear, as it is just the way I learn best.

Thank you Steve for making this video. My mom Shirley is the sister of Mary Francis Penick (Skeeter) and I'm her blood niece. Skeeter and I share the same birthday and I've got pics of us on the phone giving birthday wishes! When her and her band would come to ky. to visit in her limo we were the coolest kids on the street! She graduated from Dixie Heights high school and her pic hangs on the wall to this day! Skeeter Davis Hwy.22 is in Dryridge,Ky. I as a kid got to run all over the Opry and Stonewall Jackson's bus fascinated me, it was always parked in front! It was a wonderful perk getting into Opryland free! Bus Fare to Ky. was written for my grandma, she always kept a suitcase packed and rode the Greyhound to Ky. to come see us! I can't thank you enough for making this video,it truly means a lot,my aunt should not be FORGOTTEN! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

I used to attend the Lighthouse Church in Owen County, Kentucky , which is adjacent to Grant County where Skeeter grew up. Skeeter's brother and his wife attended the Lighthouse Church and Skeeter did a concert of both her secular and gospel songs one night after she had been diagnosed with breast cancer. She also gave her Christian testimony. She was a sweet lady and I wish we could have stayed with us a little longer here below. I don't remember when I first heard The End of the World, but it may have been at a restaurant that we always stopped at on the way to visit my mother's cousins in Indiana, which we did every year. The restaurant had little mini jukebox selectors on every table and country hits played all during the time we ate there. At home I pretty much heard mostly gospel music, with some Lawrence Welk and TV variety shows. We did not have a record player and seldom listened to radio. However, I remember hearing The End of the World in the 1960s.

Of course, End of the World is one, but others I really love are Gonna Get Along Without You Now, Silver Threads and Golden Needles, I Can't Stay Mad At You, and No, Never. And if you haven't Heard it, check out her album "Here's The Answer". She responds to may great hit songs with a song that answers them. In fact, I just ordered one of her vinyl reacors since the sound so much better than electronic versions. RIP, Ms. Davis.

Loved it from the 1st time I heard it. She had such a sweet voice and I was really music lover. My dad had gotten into making the 8 track tapes and I was the person who played them to make sure they worked fine, sounded fine and would jump to other tracks. It was wonderful driving through the countryside and even at the cemetery listening to her singing.🤩🥰 I’m from West Virginia. 🥰 I don’t know if I could pick just 5 songs but Skeeter, BeeGees, John Denver and Elvis would be on my list as well. I was in the back seat of my Aunt's car. I loved The End of the World. My sister and I sang that song over and over. It was and is one of my all-time favorites.

My top five song of all time is .., Imagine by John Lennon 2) Back Home Again by John Denver 3) For the Good Time by Dean Martin 4) Rainbow are back in Style by Dean Martin 5. Honey by Bobby Goldboro. I First heard Back Home Again on the Tonight show and that started a serval year love affair with John Denver. Since then my taste in music has expended to other easy listening. It so hard to pick 5. Ist time I have commented on your posting I just love watching your posting. Never thought graveyards could be so interesting. We are about the same age was born in 1958 and my mom and dad was from Tulsa, Oklahoma. I really enjoyed when you went back to Oklahoma to visit your family , your posting. from that trip. Couple years ago I went back to Oklahoma first time in 38 years. My cousins was able to fill me in on my dad family history I never knew. He been gone 30 years. They took me around to my grandpa I never knew grave... I realize for the 1st time my dad lost his dad when he was only 12 years old, he was the oldest of 4 kids so he became the man of the house at 12 which gave me a completely different look at my dad. Your channel has helped me understand the need to look at our history. My heart go out to you and your brother dealing with your mom. I have dealt with both my mom and dad dealing with demitia. And it so hard to know what to do and it take a toll on the care giver. We finally put my mom into the assistant living where I worked as a cook. That was really rough to get her to agree to ,. She did agree cause I would be around a lot . Even then some days I would go to work at 5 a.m. get home at 7 p.m. after she was in bed so I just wanted you to know I keeping your family in my thoughts and prayers. Please take care of yourself cause you and your brother can't take care of your mom without caring for yourself s.

Hey Steve, so I had to google the song on KZbin and I have to say what a beautiful song. Thanks for bringing Skeeter Davis into my music catalogue. I would say my top 3 songs are What’s Love Got to Do With It by Tina Turner, anything by the Carpenters (I love Karen Carpenter) and California Dreamin by The Mamas and The Papas.

Skeeter Davis ... WOW. That brings up memories from back in the day. End of the world is possibly one of the greatest songs ever recorded. Not my favorite song of all time, but it would be high up on my list. There are so many great songs, it would be very hard to have a top 5 list. I likely would keep changing my mind as I think of more. Steve, my favorite song of all time is a more modern song. Hotel California by The Eagles. Thanks STEVE ... another GREAT trip down memory lane.

Skeeters song is of pure heart. Its why it rings so true to so many. Shade of Gray too. Hotel California , unfortunately, is about shooting coke. Its satanic as hell itself. Stairway to Heaven is about smoking it ...old school. The devil has his minions ...and God has His.

Hello Steve. I don't remember Skeeter Davis but I do remember The End of the World. I heard Vonda Shepard's version. Going to give a listen to Skeeter Davis now. Thanks for introducing me to a new musical talent. I can't pick a favorite song but always love listening to Frank Sinatra and I grew up with the old beach bands....love those old guitars. Happy and safe trip.....wishing for less traffic.

skeeter's wiki page says the song has been covered by lots of other artists. I'm only familiar with hers, but not surprised. wonder if frank covered it? love the beach boys! thanks, lisa!
