Speaking of when it hit the news, it did hit Vietnam mainstream media on another occasion. If I remember correctly, VTV was doing an interview on how Gen Z would spend their Lunar New Year holiday (or Tết, as we call it). And they just so happen to interview a maimai player who's also a freelancer artist. There was even a part where they hit the arcade and tried maimai out first hand. It was wild to see.

If they want maimai to be popular, they should allow franchising outside Japan so that people can have easy access to maimai machines. But sadly, arcades are literally dead outside Japan. it used to be big and I miss hanging out and talking with friends cuz back then magazines were expensive and to get access to latest news and tips and tricks, yes, you actually have to socialize. Also Japan has this isolationist mindset. Looks like they are testing the waters (Maimai DX By Sega Placed On Test In The USA) so this is good for maimai fans.

I remember the SCMP report and video when it came out. I, as a Hongkonger, was pretty shocked when I saw it since rhythm games had never been in any mainstream media in pretty much any place in Asia except Japan, and I only remember that one HK news report that travel to Japan to see people playing maimai, describing wearing gloves to play is for… “hygiene purposes”. It was recorded in the pandemic era, so I guess it makes sense? But safe to say they don’t know what they are talking about For the BA video… I think it received much less negative reactions here in the East than in the West, mostly because the game is way too popular. To be fair, many of the maimai players who also play BA have conflicted opinions about the video. Everyone in the East hated it when some guy on the Internet hit the maimai cab with a kick already, so this one about hitting it with the… everyone also feels kinda weird. At the end of the day it’s still a mod made by one guy alone, so we brushed it off as a one-off meme (which was I guess funny in a twisted way?) and now it’s almost forgotten by everyone here already. But then it blew up in the West and we all know how that would go. Kind of an unfortunate situation For the music, the popularity is boosted for several reasons. Garakuta Doll Play and Oshama Scramble are both because they are the most iconic maimai songs back in the day, and it’s tpz. Tsunagite is the biggest 15 reveal so far, so that’s understandable. As for the sasakure.UK songs, it’s definitely just because of the popularity of Project Sekai and sasakure himself is a vocaloid producer who made a lot of the songs featured in the game, not to mention The EmpError is literally a playable song in PRSK in a self collab style. The joke runs in the rhythm game community that these are PRSK songs and not maimai originals because too many ignorant people don’t know where the songs are from… lol

I’ve played maimai in five different regions (I know, I need a life) and yeah, Hong Kong was the most expensive place for playing. A lot of the arcades also reeked of smoke because of old gamblers, and attendants not reprimanding them. Hopefully the situation’s improved by now, plus I heard that a couple of arcades in HK have as many as 12 cabinets? It’s insane

Hong Kong/Australia player here: I was underage before I left Hong Kong (you need to be over 16 to go into arcades) so I only seldom get some experience playing in hk whenever I do travel back and as for mainland china I’ve never been to their maimai arcades but I heard it’s mostly just private servers and very scarce. HK has a ton of cabs if you know where to look and the cost is rather cheap compared to its Australian counterpart (~5-6HKD/1-1.2AUD iirc). Hk also have a somewhat big community but I’m not in those communities so I can’t comment on that. Also, because of emperror’s infamous difficulty level when gekichumai collaborated with PJSK, I think that’s why a lot of people knew the track.

Just recently went to the arcade and played maimai and chunithm for the first time. maimai is so fun tbh even though the newest song there was like from 7 years ago but it's still very fun. I surprisingly didn't really enjoy chunithm as much and the timing is really weird? I play pjsk and osu mania but my accuracy is really off and sometimes my input won't register. Sadly the mall is really far from my home and there's no other machine in my city
