OK here’s how that rumor all began. A guy claimed he was in Boston and was at a new stand when Elvis and some friends stopped by the new stand. The guy said he overheard Elvis say to his friends “the only thing a N is good for is to shine my shoes and by my records”. There was a magazine out at that time. Like a low-level JET magazine. They printed that story and that’s how the rumor got started. Elvis said “I would never say anything like that and people who know me know I wouldn’t say anything like that.” He did an interview with a black magazine and gave Black people credit for doing his type of music for years. Two years later jet magazine decided to investigate that rumor. They quickly debunked it, stating that Elvis was never even in Boston during that time, or at all. They printed their findings, but by then it was too late the rumor had spread. When anybody says Elvis is racist, I ask them “ why do you think that?” and the answer is always the same… “ I dunno. That’s just what I heard”. Probably that’s the same situation with Quincy Jones.

Correct. Elvis had NEVER EVEN BEEN to Boston in the 1950s. He finally visited Boston during a Tour. He played the Boston Garden on November 10, 1971. That was the FIRST TIME Elvis ever been to Boston. Some 23 YEARS after he supposedly said the racist comment there. Jet Magazine debunked the story back in '56 and people are STILL trying to repackage this fake story out of their blind racist narrative, or by simply not knowing the truth.

Hound Dog was written for Big Mama Thornton by Stoller and Lieber, two young Jewish men, so I would call that song “black” music. The writers had a vision on how they wanted it to be sung. Big Mama saw it differently. The writers had to persuade her to do it their way. ( information taken from interview of Lieber) Big Mama Thornton’s version is very different than Elvis’s version. It is very much the Blues. Five artist recorded the song before Elvis recorded it. Four of them were white. I have never heard any hate toward those artist. ( Source: Second Hang Songs) Elvis is the one that had the hit. This happens all the time. Nine Inch Nails wrote and performed “Hurt” but Johnny Cash had a huge hit with it. BB King stated it best: “ Once something is out there, anybody can add or take from it. Elvis was so good that anything he recorded was a hit. They didn’t make a mistake when they called him the King.” I trust B.B. He actually had personal experience with him. Quincy Jones never even met him. He, also, couldn’t relay any specific incidence. He just accepted what someone else said. Public Enemy disparaged a dead man’s name and made money off of it. No class. Elvis had many faults, but racism was not one of them. There are just too many people that knew him personally that sta

Little Richard had some interesting comments. He said that if he were white, he would have been bigger than Elvis. He also said that he loved Elvis; Elvis was his brother. Not only that, but Elvis helped Little Richard and other black artists get gigs in bigger venues than they would have been able to on their own. Chuck Berry and BB King also said they loved Elvis. Berry said that at the time everyone was using everyone else's move and that he took a lot from Elvis as well. Ray Charles did NOT like Elvis on the other hand. BB King said the music belonged to the universe.

This is so true. I feel like Little Richard is bitter at times, because his dumb ass signed some bogus contract with his record label which resulted in him getting minimal pay for the songs that wrote. Also people don’t understand that Little Richard only released one song he actually wrote which was tutti frutti. Little Richard is just a vibe that’s all I got to say.

The racist issue has been debunked many times over as it was something that was started many years ago by the Dorsey brothers and later picked up on by a jealous journalist (Caucasian journalist; I also am Caucasian) who wrote an article in competition with Ebony magazine. That journalist said Elvis was racist because he read that the Dorsey brothers made that accusation because they did not like it when Elvis was on their show and protested the swing music they were adding to his live performance of Heartbreak Hotel (you can see it on KZbin). It pissed them off so they tried to destroy him by saying he was racist. I think they were jealous of Presley’s fame that had just taken off as many entertainers were jealous of him. There is no document, neither written, nor vocal that anyone can point to as proof, only rumors that were started by Jimmy and Tommy Dorsey. What I have loved about this issue is that many black people have come to Elvis side and defended him.

I think the assumptions about Elvis being racist arose from the disparities of credit and compensation, the fact that he was raised in the segregated south, and a slanderous article printed in 1957, Sepia Magazine. The rumor snowballed and it was passed down like an urban myth.

Thank you for being intelligent enough to hear what they are saying, Tommy Dorsey and The Dorsey Brothers heated rock and roll and I mean they did not like rock and roll at all, I've often wondered why don't they ask Chuck Berry, Bo Diddley, BB King, Ike Turner, Little Richard, and James Brown they loved Elvis they put Elvis in high respect sure they did not get the recognition but by Elvis doing their songs and talkin about them off stage their music got played bought and they got paid for it even Ray Charles who did not like Elvis that's why he said I'll probably lose a third of my fans but I wonder did he turned in any of his royalty checks for the song Elvis sang? Don't think so Elvis grew up listening to all kinds of music itsfunneh no one ever claimed that he stole gospel music or Bluegrass and Country just R&B but he grew up in it all of it and made it a sound of his own and no Elvis never wrote a song what he did was interpreted better than anyone else thank you for your reaction

There is a video on KZbin of Otis Blackwell on the David Letterman show in the mid 80's, several years after Elvis' death where Letterman asked him if he ever met Elvis and he said NO. So there's that. Concerning Elvis, Quincy was either lying or delusional.
@jayviviano109
@jayviviano109 Жыл бұрын
True about Blackwell on Letterman, But in a different interview He stated that he regretted that because elvis throughout the years sent many open invitations to meet up. So the travesty is that it was actually around the summer of 1977 Otis decided he wanted to surprise Elvis and catch up with him while he was on tour to finally meet him, but that's when Elvis passed away. He talked about this in a couple different interviews how it really ate at him and hit him hard that Elvis passed - away especially after he had finally decided he wanted to take elvis up on the offer to meet. So a meeting between them certainly was on the table and possible .. but fates did not allow.

Both Jet and Ebony magazines investigated racism charges about Elvis and found them to be false. Quincy Jones liked to say negative things about people. He's also said bad things about Michael Jackson and the Beatles. Elvis was the King because of the level of his success. That success also broke down barriers for others.

Nope, Elvis was the opposite of racist. Quincy Jones is a music producer who among others produced some of Michael Jackson's albums and We are the World. Thank you for your reaction to Elvis (Jan. 8, 1935-Aug. 16, 1977). Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqOpdKyEgtuNjc0). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

There's a saying (attributed to visual artist, Nina Paley) that goes: "All art is derivative". Meaning some part or portion of all art (i.e., any form of creative expression, be it music, dance, painting, sculpture, etc.) is derived from artistic forms, techniques, styles, etc. that came either before it or exists concurrent with the time it's being produced. The idea of "stealing" a musical "style" is ridiculous because nobody "owns" it. If no one "owns" it, who are you gonna "steal" it from? Once it's out there, it's out there. The great blues man, B.B. King even said so in the documentary "Elvis and the Black Community". Kings said, "Once something is out there (he was referring to a style of musical performance) anyone can take part in it." And the claim that Elvis "appropriated" Black culture is just laughable. Elvis grew up in Black culture. Maybe all the people who say Elvis was a racist are just suffering from a severe case of "Elvis envy". Just my opinion.

Quincy Jones a few months ago retract his statement and apologize admitted he was wrong about what he said about Elvis. The whole racist thing started back in the late 50's or early 60's when a article was written in a black magazine by a writer Who didn't like Elvis. He wrote that Elvis said some racist remarks at a certain place. It was found out that Elvis was never at that place and never said any such thing. When the head of the magazine found out about it he told the writer to apologize to Elvis. This has fallowed Elvis rest of his life. Elvis haters refuse to believe the truth. That what started it.

Ray Charles was misinformed in saying that Elvis stole black music. Elvis didn't steal anything from anyone ELVIS CREATED HIS OWN STYLE and paid the few black artists he worked with very very well. Elvis' style had more in common with DEAN MARTIN than with any performer of color. He came up in poverty in a predominantly black segregated area in East Tupelo in the black and white churches. So his sound was different from anyone's. Elvis didnt SOUND or MOVE like anyone. Elvis MERGED elements of white and black music genres together and created a new style and sound that YOUNG PEOPLE OF EVERY COLOR AND CREED LIKED and YEARNED FOR. Not just white kids... black young people too. Spanish young people too. Young people period. It was a youth revolution going on at the time.

Fats Domino, Sammy Davis Jr. Mahummad Ali was some of his very good friends, he had black back up singers the sweet inspirations and all of these people spoke very high on Elvis they knew him personally and he bought a Cadillac for a total stranger and she was black. Elvis' biggest hit till Suspicious Minds supplanted it was It's Now or Never , an upbeat version of the Italian opera O Solo Mio. He also hit with Surrender , another original Italian opera song , he was influenced in those by Mario Lanza. His many ballad hits were influenced by Dean Martin ( Crocetti ) Should Italians accuse him of stealing their style?!!! Elvis himself called Fats Domino the King of Rock. If anything Elvis should be called the King of Music Versatility, having been inducted into 5 Music Halls of Fame! And by far outselling any other performer or band. Elvis' version of Hound Dog was based on Freddie Bell and the Bellboys version not Big Mama Thorntons and what she earned, whether justified or not was not the responsibility of Elvis. Elvis actually opened the doors for black artists and black music to be listened to by a wider white audience....he was surrounded by black music and black culture. I think Quincy Jones was a bit jealous of Elvis, perhaps because of his relationship with the Dorsey’s. People were leery of this hillbilly singer and thought he wouldn’t last. Elvis appeared on the Tommy Dorsey show a couple of times. The Dorsey’s show eventually got cancelled because of poor ratings. Even Elvis couldn’t save the show! Big band shows like theirs were on the way out- times were changing. Elvis recorded Blackwell’s music. In those days, songwriters shared publishing rights for songs because they wanted to make royalties. Blackwell made money when songs Elvis recorded sold millions. Elvis never wrote songs but did get publishing rights. Watch Elvis and the Black Community Parts I and II. It explains a lot. Big Mama Thornton was a famous black gospel and blues singer and is credited with being an early rock and roll innovator. She’s amazing! In fact, the Jordanaires worked with her and then later recorded and performed with Elvis. You can hear them in his early records and they appeared in his 4 movies prior to his army service. So you can see the music community ebbed and flowed with black and white artists influencing each other. Elvis always credited and admired all the influences on his style.

Also, the book Me and a Guy Named Elvis by Jerry Schilling shows the true Elvis. He was very honest in his portrayal and is still close with the Presley family today. In fact, he is Lisa Marie Presley's godfather and is the one that drove them to the hospital to give birth to Lisa Marie. I've been doing a lot of research into Elvis myself after the movie came out and I've only listened to and believed those closest to him, not the hangers on or the wannabes just to get attention. Even all of the celebrities that are interviewed that have actually met Elvis will speak about what a generous and awesome person he was. There's a reason his music is still popular today.

Mama Thor tons version of Hound Dog is nothing like Elvis. He brought his own talent to the song and made it a success also on how he performed it. It is an honor that Elvis liked other entertainers music and coveted them, his way.

Exacyly its people who have never met him plus how can you be considered rascist for covering a song???? Just because your song is a bigger hit than the first person who sang it? Yes the times were steeped in racism but tgdt doesn't mean Elvis was a racist Besides Big Mama Thonton didn't write Hound Dog Leiber and Stoller did, he didn't steal it! Just like now you have to get permission from the writers to sing songs so how is it stealing? He never took credit for writing any song he covered and he always said his style came from Gospel and R& B, and countrry he also sang country did he steal that too? So is Angelina Jordon a rascist for singing black music classics like Etta James and Billie Holliday? Music is music and should be alloud to be coverd by anyone especially if they get the permission and right to do it... the classic crooners Nat King Cole, Dean Martin, Bing Crosby and Sinatra all covered the same songs they sang them diferently in their owns styles and they became hits in their own right every body now still covers songs so I just do not get it??? If you research Elvis you find his heart! Elvis Presley on the Dorsey Brothers' Stage Show in 1956 - Elvis History Blog www.elvis-history-blog.com/elvis-dorsey.html this is very telling about the interactions with Elvis and Tomny Dorsey I dont think he thought he was a rasist, he admitted he didnt like Elvis's music but he knew it was the new thing and he knew Elvis was going to be a star and he invited him back on his show so if he didn't want to work with him why invite him back to give him more popularity???²

And Elvis was a huge influence to MJ. Mj was very open about his influences and said the moonwalk was never his invention. People were doing it before. Elvis was heavily influenced by soul and choir. We all influence each other but the great ones take their own spin and turn it into magic.

Sometimes people react to hearsay and take it as truth and then just continue the rumour . Other jealous people will lash out with vulgar statements trying to put somebody down , racist sexist etc . His early friends were black . early musicians he hung out ( like B.B. King etc ) with and admired and was influenced by were black , I'm sure if he was racist they would not want him around .

So glad you questioned these nasty rumors.... just jealous people, you have already seen some of his friends (all black) saying from personal experience that Elvis was not, never was a "racist". So sad, people are still passing these disparaging comments around.

How can you be a racist and been influenced by black music when he was young. He also had black background singers. He had a lot of problems, but he wasn’t a racist.

This is garbage. Elvis didn’t know what a racist was. It is easy to start these rumors but you will find nothing to back them up. Elvis found his love of Gospel music in his Baptist Church when he was a little boy. He didn’t know he was a different colour. I still listen to the more than 220 Gospel songs he recorded when I work. He used to go to what he and his friends called their tree house. Elvis used to pretend a broom was his guitar and his friend’s and he would practice their moves for Church. He might move like a black person or sing like one but he thought he was one for a very long time. He never saw Colour, race or religion. He was the only white man in the South in the 50’s standing up for equality. They called him the white N word and smashed all of his records but he wouldn’t back down. He wouldn’t say sorry because he believed he didn’t do anything wrong and he didn’t. The Establishment wanted him gone, not the fans. He used to quietly go back to Tupelo and put on a concert at coloured only concerts. Only stupid America divides their people up by colour. Elvis was stuck on prescription drugs given to him by a Doctor he trusted. They made him sound like an addict. After watching that video I now know why so many coloured people thought he was racist. Quincy should be ashamed, that made me sick.

What about the music expressly written for Elvis, for instance the "King Creole" soundtrack it's incredible, but I suppose he copied that from someone else. I've just read the lyrics to "Fight the Power" and it sounds as if they have a chip on their shoulders and too be frank they sound more racist than they are making Elvis out to be! And how would Public Enemy know anything about Elvis, they never met him and neither did that bandwagon jumper Mary J Blige.

The things the king did no one can teach that. Either you have it or you don't have it. You can't teach anyone to sing like he did you have it already or you don't.

Elvis was not a racist. Maybe Quincy Jones was jealous or a racist himself. Some people just repeat gossip. Elvis hired and insisted on having some black backup singers even when he was told not to bring them to certain venues. He said if they weren’t welcome, he wouldn’t perform. That’s putting your money where your mouth is.

Hound dog was originally done by Big Mama Thornton. A black lady. But the song was wrote by two white guys. When you cover someone else's song you have to get permission from the publishing company which Elvis Presley did.. he didn't steal anything.. he covered some black artist songs., what's wrong with that? When you see interviews with b.b. King Sammy Davis jr. Little Richard the black ladies that worked with him. They all loved him and they're the ones that knew him.... these other people are just jealous of his success

People who claim Elvis is was racist do not have the integrity to do even the basics of research. They simply regurgitate what they have heard, from someone else who has heard, from someone who once said something that someone else said. Utter nonsense! We now live in an age where "Not-Being-Racist" isn't enough - you are expected to demonstrate your anti-racism via some form of woke activism that can be heralded on (anti) social media sites, designed to showcase how 'Right-On' these unlearned people are, without having a single solitary clue about history. Their views are the flavour of the day, in an age where those flavours change based on the whims of 'Influencers(?????)' and their shepherded followers. It can literally take just five minutes to debunk the 'Elvis Racist' myth, but five minutes is just too long for these people to seek out the truth.
