this was recorded live in an empty studio as nbc's retaliation to him standing his ground to do this tribute to dr. king & bobby kennedy..once the cameras went black he literally collapsed to the floor in tears as all the emotions he poured out through the song finally hit him.. Elvis grew up in the church & specifically in a black church that was near his home which welcomed hiim & his mother.. gospel music was his absolute favorite & he had the largest collection of gospel music in america at one time... the network was opposed to his doing this song but he had so much respect & admiration for dr. king & took inspiration from him he stood his ground & basically said no song.. no special.. the infulence of his church upbringing is so up front in this performance his wearing the white suit.. & he literally did take us to church with this Thank you for sharing such an honest & heart touching reaction with us check out his performance of how great thou art the best video version is of him in a blue jumpsuit from 1972

“ ….. a warmer sun shining hope on everyone” . This song has beautiful lyrics & Elvis sang them with the strong conviction he held in his heart, that people need to come together as one people, not seeing the colour of a person’s skin, but seeing the actual person.

Everything in this performance has a purpose. The song itself was written by Earl Brown, inspired by Dr. Martin Luther King’s speech I Have a Dream. The song was written with Elvis in mind & it’s a tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Mr. Brown was aware of Elvis love for Dr. King. He also knew that Elvis was devastated by the news of Dr. King’s assassination (just 9 miles away from Graceland, Elvis‘s home). The white suit was also worn to accompany the song’s dream for better days. At the time, the conflict in Vietnam was heart wrenching. In remembrance, of the lives lost during the Vietnam war. The burgundy colored scarf Elvis wore around his neck was for them.

From Elvis Presley's official website on the making of this song: "It was Elvis’ reaction to the news of Kennedy’s assassination that lead to the creation of the song "If I Can Dream," a tribute song to King, featuring direct quotes from the Civil Rights leader. In the spring of '68, Elvis was working on his upcoming TV special, "Elvis." After seeing the news about Kennedy's death on TV, Elvis spent an entire night with the show's director, Steve Binder, and his friends, talking about the [MLK and Kennedy] assassinations and Elvis' wishes for the world. The conversation was heartfelt and honest, and Binder believed Elvis had an important message for the country. Binder then went to the show's Musical Director Billy Goldenberg and songwriter Earl Brown and told them about the discussion. He wanted a powerful, meaningful song that would close out the TV special. Because the special was slated to air in December, the producers and Elvis' manager, Col. Tom Parker, had planned to end the show with a Christmas song, but Binder had other ideas. It wasn't long before "If I Can Dream" was born."

Last month, to be exact April 4th, it was exact 55 years ago that Martin Luther King was cowardly killed in Lorraine Motel in Memphis Tennessee. When Elvis heard this he was completely devastated and shocked because MLK was a very good friend of Elvis and an often seen guest at Graceland, Elvis called MLK as his inspiration. Elvis wanted to do his come back special in April 1968 but he immediately delayed it to December 3 1968 in which he sang this song at the end of the come back special to remember his big friend MLK. Not many people know it, but Elvis payed also the funeral of MLK, one of the examples of how generous Elvis could be. I never stop saying that if we all would do what Elvis did because of generosity and humanity, the world would be a much better place.

From what I know.. this was a tribute to MLK that Mac Davis wrote.. and Elvis sang it amazingly.. You have to know that Elvis was born dirt poor.. his Daddy went to jail when he was like 2 yrs old.. his Mama raised him in the black churches... research this... when I hear ppl say Elvis stole black music it upsets me.. because this man lived black music... that's why he got it

Honey, I can't believe you haven't seen this golden performance. Remember this was a risky time to be doing a tribute to MLK. He didn't care. He talked them out of the Christmas song they wanted him to sing. He never sang it in public again and was so respectful of it's lyrics. He wanted to bring us all together, and never gets credit for that. Thanks K.

His tribute to Martin Luther King, after he was senselessly assassinated, which upset Elvis deeply. This was a televised performance before a live audience. Elvis was told by his manager Not to do this, as it would destroy his career, but Elvis went ahead & did it, because he felt strongly that there should be racial equality … & remember that Elvis was raised as one of four very poor white families in a poor black community, & his friends had been the black children living within that community. As a young performer in the 1950s, he had flouted the strict segregation rules & was seen as a threat to the establishment.

It is interesting how much his music in general has managed to last the test of time. Where other artists forgotten about music not heard. People are still listening to Elvis. People dress up and sing as Elvis, because in America he has become bigger than just the music he sung. He really was an icon and to a point much we can all hope or wish we could become.

The song was written to commemorate the assassination of Martin Luther King Jnr. only a few months prior and also the recent assassination of Robert Kennedy. He wore the white suit to signify peace and the red scarf is the blood spilt in the US at that time. The song is timeless because what was true then is true now. Incredible raw emotion in his voice and passion. This is why he is the King. Great reaction you got it and so his job is done.

this song was to honor MLK who had been assassinated only weeks earlier. Elvis fought with his sponsors and manager because they wanted him to close the show with a Christmas song and he refused, and insisted on closing the show with this song.

I love this performance. MLK was killed 4/4/68. Erwin Brown wrote song for Elvis late April/May. Elvis Recorded it in June 68 , it was released fall ‘68, this performance was Nov/Dec ‘68. Christmas Special. He wasn’t suppose to sing this song. in 60’s it was too controversial. So sad.

Great to see the excitement in your face and hear it in your voice about Elvis’s Stella performance of his statement song! You’ll find the link between all the songs he sings, whether rock, R& B, ballad, or his favourite Gospel,is that he Always sings them with his heart and soul. He recorded over 700 songs in his short life,so you have plenty to discover , “In the ghetto” (another song his advisors didn’t want him to sing but he insisted) will make you think. “ How Great Thou Art” will amaze you, “ Polk salad Annie “ will make you smile, “ Solitaire “ will make you cry. His interpretation of songs is unique and mesmerising. Thank you for reacting to our King of Tock and Roll🙏👌💕🕺

If I Can Dream There must be lights burning brighter somewhere Got to be birds flying higher in a sky more blue If I can dream of a better land Where all my brothers walk hand in hand Tell me why, oh why, oh why can't my dream come true Oh why There must be peace and understanding sometime Strong winds of promise that will blow away the doubt and fear If I can dream of a warmer sun Where hope keeps shining on everyone Tell me why, oh why, oh why won't that sun appear We're lost in a cloud With too much rain We're trapped in a world That's troubled with pain But as long as a man Has the strength to dream He can redeem his soul and fly Deep in my heart there's a trembling question Still I am sure that the answer, answer's gonna come somehow Out there in the dark, there's a beckoning candle, yeah And while I can think, while I can talk While I can stand, while I can walk While I can dream Oh, please let my dream Come true Right now Let it come true right now Oh yeah
