You're correct about Andie McDowell. I worked with her back in the 90's on a film entitled "Michael." She also enjoyed Davidoff cigarillos. Love the Frosty bit, and I don't think C&D's corn cob blend was out at the time of this video:). Great content!

Thanks for the interesting information on famous pipe smokers. One of the interesting points to ponder is, unlike today, in the old days (i.e. 1940's and 50's and possibly 60's) most pipe smokers, famous and not so famous alike stuck with one blend and rarely varied. My grandfather was like that, he loved one called Royal Tivoli, a dutch Cavendish.. Whereas today, as you know, most of us have at least a few if not numerous tins in the rotation. Just a sign that the hobby is alive and well. I have an old empty tin of Edward G. Robinson in my attic somewhere, I'll try to dig it out this week and see if the label has the manufacturer's information. Keep up the good work. Your videos along with Matches 860 and NW pipesmoker are a highlight of my day. Doug Owen
@MuttnchopPiper7 жыл бұрын
Doug Owen - you're absolutely right, my grandfather was the same way, he smoked Prince Albert exclusively, every Christmas all the grandkids would give him a tin of Prince Albert as a present, by the end of the day he would have 5 tins which lasted him all year. Back then I think pipe smoking was just something you did, you found a blend you liked and smoked it all day, today we have more choices and it's grown into a hobby. 😃😃😃

P.G.Wodehouse apparently crumbled cigars into his large straight pot pipe, and smoked almost constantly while writing. Around an ounce or so a day.

Hello Muttonchop, Great video as per usual. You had me there at the end wondering whom on earth you were talking about! Now, if I may, I would like to share my opinion or version of the truth as regards certain smokers or their blends. Firstly, it might be of interest to know that Stanley Baldwin was the one who actually suggested the name Presbyterian Mixture to that very blend after having sampled some from a close friend. Secondly, it is to my knowledge that it's Sherlock Holmes's assistant, Dr Watson, who enjoyed the Arcadia blend (mentioned to produce a charming and unoffensive aroma). As for the detective himself, he was thought to have smoked a black shag (probably a steamed Virginia) that he kept in the end of a Persian slipper (whereas he stored his cigars in a coal bucket). Thirdly, William Faulkner was rumored to smoke a number of blends alongside Balkan Sobranie including Dunhill's My mixture, St. Bruno and Prince Albert. Finally, the Edward G. Robinson mixture was originally produced by Suttlif under his personal supervision. The blend was discontinued for some time and reintroduced a few years back. Once again, thank you for your entertaining and ever informative videos! Kindest regards. Ali

I remember reading in the old "Pipes & Tobaccos" magazine that when Faulkner died they found a lot of Walter Raleigh cans around his house and garage (used as storage containers for various things) concluding that when he couldn't get his favorite, he could always run down to the drugstore to get a reliable standby.

Edwin J Robinson starred in a fantastic movie, with Orson Welles and Loretta Young, called "The Stranger". Besides being a great movie with great performances, it is one of my favorite pipe smoking movies. It is worth it just to watch Robinson smoke his pipes. My advice is to watch it through for the story, which is wonderful, and then watch it again just for the pipe smoking. Of course its a movie, but he brings such a wonderful casual flare to his smoking scenes, it really makes one yearn for the days long gone, when pipe smoking was not the point, but was sort of the background music to one's life.

I was actually friends with Mr. Shelby Foote. We even saw the same doctor. He didn’t want to talk at all about the civil war. I guess he was just tired of it in his later days. He would laugh at all those people who would send him their Dad’s pipe because their dad loved his books. I asked if he’d been getting any Dunhills, “ No, they send me these old worn out things”. We had some good times. Thought you might enjoy that.

still wonder what pipe tobacco Walt Disney smoked.
@HJKelley477 жыл бұрын
Walt Disney had a lung tumor removed as a result of lung cancer, and subsequently died some weeks later following his surgery. Here is a tidbit of info re: Walt Disney: " In an interview with Hazel George, the Disney Studio nurse and confidante of Walt Disney, she remembered that one evening Walt Disney told her, "You're right about one thing. Smoking and drinking are sins. Because you are one of God's creatures and if you don't take care of the body He gave you, you are committing a sin."Yet, Walt still continued to smoke his entire life.My dad smoked much of his life until he gave it up cold turkey after his first heart attack. Unfortunately, years of smoking had caused some health issues that still plagued him for the rest of his life.......... Disney Legend Ollie Johnston told Disney historian Michael Barrier that, in later years, Walt's coughed more frequently and it had a rougher sound. Johnston said, "that nervous cigarette cough. It seemed he'd get into this hacking awfully quickly if anything worried him a lot." When Walt entered Saint Joseph's Hospital, right across from the Disney Studio, on November 2, 1966, roughly a week after appearing in the fabled short film where he explained the E.P.C.O.T. concept, a routine X-ray showed a spot the size of a walnut on his left lung. He had surgery the following Monday, November 7, 1966.The surgeon told the immediate Disney family that he had six months to two years at most left to live. Not all of Walt's family was told. His brother Ray and his sister Ruth found out about the operation through the newspapers that downplayed any seriousness and made no mention of a malignancy. The doctor told Walt that they had removed all the cancerous lesions and that with a little rest, Walt should be "as good as new" in an attempt to keep Walt's spirits up, but it was obvious that Walt sensed his time was limited."I don't think he ever accepted it," stated Disney Legend Ward Kimball. "Knowing Walt, not until he closed his eyes for the last time was he ever convinced." Walt Disney died at 9:35 a.m. on December 15,1966 in Room 529 of Saint Joseph's Hospital of "cardiac arrest due to Bronchogenic ca(rcinoma)" which basically meant his heart stopped because of lung cancer."

@brandonnott36957 жыл бұрын
qBMOp she was quoting Walt Disney, and wine in moderation actually has health benefits. Also back in Jesus time, drinking water wasn't always pure, the process of making wine filtered the water and made it drinkable. The sin part Walt speaks about comes into context when getting drunk, getting drunk absolutely harms your body and Jesus says do not be drunk with too much wine...

I have really enjoyed these two videos. I was following along great until you got to Frosty, then I wondered what you had been smoking. Just kidding. D&D does still make the Crooner blend in tin and bulk. A specially cut, cube-style Burley and Deertongue tobacco, Cornell & Diehl's Crooner is an authentic copy of Bing Crosby's private blend, shared with C&D by one of his closest friends. I am not sure but I believe someone still makes a match to Revilation and Mixture 79. Thanks and happy piping.

I I really enjoyed these insights to famous pipe smokers, thanks for this 🙂 I guess God smokes Penzance, he’s the only one who can get it! 😉 The answer to the riddle is my pension expectation.

I was wondering if you have any particular pipe & tobacco you'd recommend for a beginner? I've been following your videos for a few weeks now, and the pipe smoking hobby is definitely something I want to try!

Great research! If you're interested, you might contact the folks at the original Tinder Box in Santa Monica CA and talk with them. They are extremely familiar with what famous people in Hollywood smoked as they catered to them, created blends for them, and knew them well. The store is a virtual who's who's and very interesting to visit. The original proprietor, Ed, has long since passed but I spent several visits learning about the "good 'ol days".

Here's a link to an article on Ed Koplin that's pretty interesting, articles.latimes.com/2007/apr/11/local/me-kolpin11. Kramers is another shop in Beverly Hills that catered to the famous folks, www.kramerstobaccoshop.com/. Just some interesting pipe history...
