I was camping recently and had the opportunity to smoke in the "restaurante terrace" (I don't know how you call the place outside the restaurant/bar where there are chairs and tables outdoors), it was covered by a roof, just the typical rustic restaurant with its small terrace. So i was sitting while drinking a soda with a friend. Here in Spain I never saw anyone smoking from a pipe or just a cigar, so I didn't have any refference about how they would react. The difference here is non-smokers aren't that hostile to smokers, while it's true they prefer being in a clean space, obviously. The owner of the camp was pretty nice, and my friend and I weren't alone there, so more people could smell and see this. The very first reaction especially in young people seems to be a smile, I think one reason is seeing a 27 years old smoking from a pipe (people think I am around 22-23), another one is just, like me, have not seen anyone doing it. One of the times the owner went outside to the terrace I saw her smelling it and then looking for the source of it, she saw me and and just like the rest, told me how good it smelled (I was smoking Crown Achievement) compared with cigarettes, that was what she thought I was going to smoke, so she got closer and we talked a moment about it, then she invited us both to play at night a table game (Catan) and, when we were playing, someone who had been on the terrace while i smoked asked me if I was not going to smoking another pipe, which smelled good and was just relaxing seeing at it, so I just had to smoke a bit of Original Choice from McBaren while playing with them. So for me that was the only experience and quite pleasant. They were curious about something they had not seen, and that simple thing allowed me to socialize that day and participate in an event for the fact of smoking a pipe. I do not say that this is what will happen every time someone does it, but we are far from convey the same sensations as cigarette smokers and I think for the better. The pipe is not anxious, smells good, relaxes the environment and feeds the curiosity of the rest. I wouldn't mind saying something like, at the right time and place, the pipe reaches the soul where cigarettes only can reach the lungs. Greeting from here as another fan of fantasy, Tolkien and pipe smoking among other things. Congratulations for your channel, it involves everything that means smoking in pipe.

Those outside areas are known as gardens and if it's a bar it's a beer garden. Great story I have had mixed reactions through the years from good saying "it smells great" or "or it makes you look charming." The bad are usually uneducated people who think pipes fit in the the old realm of cigarettes anti any tobacco.

I’ve had a really nice response to me smoking my pipe in public. It usually starts with a little ridicule, but then the conversation opens up, and I’ll have complete strangers telling me their fond memories of a loved one who smoked a pipe. One evening I was waiting outside some shops while my girlfriend was inside, and there was a group of teenagers milling around, and one of them was just looking at me. Then he smiled and said that his grandad used to smoke a pipe. I said “he sounds like great man.” He smiled to himself, and said “yeah he was. Have a nice night.” I’ve never had anyone say anything bad (not that I’d care if they did), but I was shocked by the way it gets complete strangers to open up and tell stories about their loved ones. That’s one of my favourite things about smoking a pipe. They might not have been thinking about that person that day, but seeing me smoke a pipe brought them a nice memory. That’s an amazing thing.

I'm working in Liverpool, UK on a building site near the docks and fired up my pipe amongst the smokers in the smoking area outside, then braced myself for the comments... The looks of disbelief were followed by "hey mate, that is so cool and old school" They loved it and the smell of the tobacco. I've even had non smokers sitting with me just because the aroma reminds them of their fathers, or their childhood. One guy said he is going to buy a pipe, just because i look so relaxed whilst smoking it! 😂

Compliments are sadly now few and far between. The most annoying has to be the fake cough and evil eye from across the street, as if a brief encounter with a pipe smoker 30 feet away just subtracted a few weeks of their life! The rare enquiry about the blend I smoke usually comes from older men.

I fully agree brother. I have been wondering the same thing while smoking on campus (going to college under the GI bill). I instantly thought that some Lane 1-Q would be better than Nightcap or some 965. The results were amazing. I've had so many other students (younger crowd) express an interest in what I was smoking to the point that one of them decided to get into pipes and has had an amazing time with it. We are both Mechanical Engineering students, and get together for study sessions of which the pipe lighting comes first. He just expresses an interest in English blends, of which I provided, and is truly pleased. Thank you for the video, my friend. As always, Semper Fi!

I recently went back to pipe smoking after 35 years. I smoke aromatics. Live just outside of New York City. For the past six weeks or so I've been smoking my pipe while walking on the bike path. The weather here is just starting to warm up therefore more people are on the bike path at this time. In 6 weeks I've had two comments. Last week a woman commented "Huffin and Puffin I like it". Yesterday as I approached a jogger in the opposite direction I heard a very loud yell of that famous four letter word. I looked up and as he jogged on about 20 feet from me in the opposite direction he yelled out "F your smoke" full version of course. As I continued on with my walk all I could think of is, if I would encounter this jogger again (on my return walk home). I wasn't really concerned with what this jogger might do if we were to meet again but I was concerned with what I would have to do in the event of an altercation. When I switch to riding my bicycle I will not be smoking my pipe on the bike path. I do feel that I should not have to be subjected to vulgarity nor should others because of a person's dislike for my pipe smoking.

Nice video. My first experience of pipe smoke was sitting in the kitchen of my cousins down the country (I'm from Ireland). The father of the house was sitting after his day's work on the farm, and the aroma which wafted from his pipe as he smoked was so mellow, sweet, and melodious, I was somewhat taken aback because I didn't know that tobacco could smell like that. I thought tobacco smelled acrid and gritty like cigarettes. It's that experience which planted the idea in my mind that only sprouted ten years later, in the present, buying my own pipe. One other point. I don't agree that cigars smell fouler than cigarettes. I think they smell much pleasanter, more aromatic, though more staunch and full. However, they are certainly more challenging to smoke, and can be overpowering. A problem the bystander doesn't have to contend with! I would often be pleased to stand beside someone smoking a cigar, whereas a cigarette would be a nuisance.

Here in Argentina (please, sorry if my english es VERY bad), pipe smoking is not a "famous" way of smoking. And smoking cigars or cigarettes is concibed as a disgusting activity. People realy dislike the smell of tobacco. But sometimes i think when I am inside of a Bar, what could happen if I start smoking my pipe with a Cherry, or chocolate or any good aromatic tobaco. I really think people will be gratefull to me for "showing" them such a nice smell. Even smoking a Latakia, or Virginia Burley blend, is really an amaizing smell or "room note", like we say in the "pipe-world". Sometimes my friends, not pipe smokers, say to me :" What the hell are you smoking, can I eat that!!?", and I am smoking a Virginia latakia blend. The world will be a better place if people really sit, smell and APRECIATE the smell of a blend that anyone is smoking anywhere, even in a closed room (here in argentina is ilegal smoking inside Bars, restaurants, etc). I mean, isn't that the real purpose of an aromatic tabaco? Anyway, nice video! Greetings from Quilmes, Buenos Aires Argentina.

Great videos! I've been smoking for almost 40 years now. I stopped once for about one year. Anyhow, I am what you would call a Utility Pipe Smoker. 99% of the people I am around smoking my pipe enjoy the smell. One time I was smoking my pipe walking through a Christmas Light Festival. I felt like I was being followed even though there was a crowd around the streets but as I walked up and down a couple streets this fella I noticed following me for about 2 blocks. He stopped me and started telling me he started following me because he enjoyed the smell of the pipe. It reminded him of his grandfather and he thanked me for sharing my smoke. LOL was odd but made me feel good that I brought back fond memories. I find this happening more often nowadays since around here you find very few pipe smokers. I can count on my one hand how many pipe smokers I have seen here in the last 2 years. Not very many but many, many comments of fond memories brought back to people smiling as I walk by smoking my pipe. Have a great day!

It’s great to hear that you’re not only a pipe smoker but enjoy the Renaissance Festivals! I belong to a group called the Society for Creative Anachronisms and I never get complaints about smoking my pipe. During gate duty (where you and a friend sit at the gate of your camp to make sure that only residents of the camp and camp friends come in) I’d always smoke my pipe. Roamers walking by would walk up all the time to ask what I was smoking. Appalachian Peach and Berry seemed to be the ones to draw attention. Must say I couldn't agree more with your statements here my friend, the aromatics certainly when of a scent that captures folks attention like that are what I like to consider the main stays within the tobacco arsenal that are always a win to the general public whom of which may not be a tobacco smoker/puffer. I have done a review on my everyday lighter it’s the Kiribi Kabuto short lighter, I highly recommend them. I'm loving your videos. I've been smoking cigars for about a decade. Most of my family knows me for being around having a cigar to unwind and enjoy it. I transformed my office into my smoking room. Ventilated fan, weather stripping to separate it from the rest of the house and isolate the smoke. My girlfriend hates hates HATES the smell of cigars, so she doesn't care when I'm in my office. I've recently started more gravitating towards pipe because I simply hadn't really gotten into it. She loves the aroma and it doesn't bother her. She doesn't even care if I walk around the house with my pipe. Like you said, cigars can be very harsh and very overwhelming to non-smokers. I still love a good cigar, but I'm finding pipe to be nice to unwind, and there are so many blends and casings, it's really quite nice. I'm enjoying the hell out of it. My family has even had zero issues with it so far. Has been a nice transition, and I agree, people seem far more receptive to things that they can go, "Oh hey that smells amazing what is that?" than they are to go, "oh god that cigar... dude, can you not?"

Thats some well thought out advice. 👍 Ive recently started pipe smoking. Ive got a couple of barrel briar pipes that cost that xost about £15 each. I then bought some supermarket pipe tobacco. Special Virginia i think it was called - it tasted like soap and nearly put me off pipe smoking - so i bought an aromatic blend from the pipe shop in Edinburgh called Enigma and its wonderful. My wife and i were recently staying up near Loch Lomond and we were having a drink in a pub called The Clachan Inn - it's the oldest licensed pub in Scotland - and i decided to sit on the bench outside the pub and have a smoke at my pipe just to see what peoples reactions would be. Some folk looked down at me with disdane, but i could tell most of the others - especially the cigarette smokers - were enjoying it. So im going to keep some aromatics handy if im taking my pipe anywhere in the future. 👍

For me, it was a cigar that got me into tobacco. 2 years ago I played in a mariachi. There's an event that has been going on for about the last 27 years in Albuquerque NM where Mariachi's from all over the country come and learn from the professional big name groups, there's also a competition and at the end a large concert consisting of the big name groups. After the concert, when I went back to the hotel, me and few group members went walking around. We ran into some other of our group members that were talking to a couple of guys from another group. We ended up hanging out playing music and drinking a bit. A group of Mariachis, from the three big name groups that were there, walked by us holding cases of beer and bottles of fancy tequila and they asked us to join them. About half way through the night the oldest man pulled out a cigar and started smoking it. The whole time I kept thinking to myself "wow, that smells amazing" . Eventually I asked him what it was and he replied "a real man's cigar" (he was implying it was a strong cigar). Ever since then I've been slowly getting into tobacco and have recently taken a liking to pipes. I found there was a YTPC and now I can't wait to get my hands on some more pipe tobacco.

I'm a fairly new pipe smoker. I've only been smoking a pipe for a month, and I truly enjoy the experience. But, my parents and siblings are of a mind with the general public; that smoking, as a whole, is bad for one's health. I'm just unsure as to how to tell them that I have taken up pipe smoking. Could you give me some advice on how to do so gently and calmly?

I recently went to the Renaissance festival here in NC and noticed 2 separate individuals smoking a pipe. In my eyes, they were the coolest guys there, even cooler than myself lol. I had been wanting to become a pipe smoker for a while, from the allure and sophisticated, distinguished view in my eyes of pipe smoking. From Sherlock to gandalf to Leo in Django. Seeing these guys at the festival really let me to do my research for days and ask allot of people questions about diving into pipe smoking. I'm an occasional cigar smoker and felt I would like Pipe smoking. I purchased my first pipes and tobacco 3 days ago and my first time was made a bit easy from watching these videos and I'm loving it!!!

I love cigar and pipe smell. For me it's weird how cigar smoke pushes away more than cigarette smoke, as you said. I love to smell pure tobacco, coffee, woods, honey an all this stuff. I tried both pipe and cigars. I'm not sure if i did it correctly with a pipe but I really liked both. I kind of lean towards cigars but I may need to experiment more.

@@kcersk Greek and Lithuanian are conservative languages and similar. 3000 years ago, from Persia to Great Britain male names ended in a -s, now only some languages do this. My neighbor who was an older guy, smoked a pipe and I always thought it smelled so good. That was what peaked my interest in pipes. It was a major contrast to my father's cigerettes. The smell definitely is enough to attract more positive, instead of negative attention.

Had a dude walk up to me at a family friendly bar that allows smoking. I was smoking on my pipe and he just said “there are kids here, think about it” then he walked past a bar that was 6 feet away from me past 4+ people smoking cigarettes and said nothing to them. It completely blew my mind that he had the unmitigated gall to try to shame me for smoking a pipe and didn’t care about the cigarettes…

I have had similar experiences with the English Blends I favor. People surprise me with their positive reactions when they smell my tobacco (which is very infrequently). Frequently they are returned to the memory of a relative or friend, or whatever positive experience they themselves had without becoming a dedicated pipe smoker. I've introduced a few folks to the hobby, and also have been pleasantly surprised to learn how many of friends are closet smokers who are keen to have someone to smoke with. One such example of a surprisingly positive experience was that of a relative who suffers from asthma among other issues, complaining rather loudly at the oppressive smell of the match I struck (some 40 feet away) then asking me to come sit at the same table so she could enjoy the aroma of my pipe. Also for myself I smoke a pipe and yet suffer greatly whenever anyone strikes up a cigarette. In all instances I am cautious as to who I smoke around and in what settings. I certainly am aware that whatever image I project affects the community of pipe smokers at large.

I've been hesitant to smoke my pipe in public because of cigarette smokers and the mentality nonsmokers have of those who do smoke tobacco. This video really helped me find a way to perhaps be accepted around nonsmokers. I love aromatics anyway so it should hopefully be not much of an issue as you pointed out, especially with my wife! Hi, not watched your channel for a while. Glad to see you're still active in YT and submitting helpful materials. You look well and I hope everything is good with you as someone I've grown to respect and trust. That's partly what I'm looking to draw out here. If a pipe smoker exudes a calm reflective persona then I feel this can be somewhat reassuring. Here's a person that may be contemplative, thinking before he acts. This is a positive for us as a community. For me as a 51yo pipe smoking also triggers memories of family and friends long passed on. It can make me somewhat reminiscent even just seeing that person. The acquaintances have gone but their spirit remains. For me that same evocative sense is equally prevalent with English blends. "This is how pipe tobacco used to smell" and so forth. This is also helpful. I have a strong dislike of how smoking has become increasingly stigmatised and we are pushed away to a corner by the non smoker. It's true that I smoke my pipe for myself rather than for others, but if we as a complentative community show our respect for that differing opinion then it builds on our reassuring demeanour. A simple question, asking those around us if they mind whether we light up, cements that case Cigarettes are about that quick hurried hit and can appear inconsiderate of those around us. Piper's consulting others are a different creature. We are not necessarily asking for permission, but we are negotiating. As long as we continue doing that, we may be more likely to remain accepted by the mainstream.

Graham - Very well said my friend, and I totally agree, in my opinion most people if you ask them if they mind if you smoke your pipe they smile and say no go ahead, because they are recounting the time when their grandfather, or uncle or father used to smoke a pipe. They may even tell you a story about that person. 👍👍👍

That was great on many levels. Thoughtfulness exemplifies class, not catering to ppl that have different perception of a given topic. And its very good suggestion - aromatic in public. Except in WA public smoking of any kind is illegal AND WA bans citizens from delivery of tobbacco to private address'. We need a tobbacco "tea party". 😂

Want to clear an area quickly? Light up a Di Nobili cigar. When I was a kid working as a lifeguard, one of the swimming club owners, an Italian guy lived on these things. He smoked them, crumbled them into a pipe and smoked them, I even saw him bite one in half and use it for chew-bacco!. A unique (and to some disgusting) aroma. Folks wondered if he was burning horse dung. Now his brother, the other boss smoked a briar pipe, Borkum Riff Bourbon exclusively. (1970's B.R. not the crap they sell today). That got me interested in piping. Loved being around Lou with his pipe burning and avoided Di Nobili Nick like the plague....

Good stuff Chris. I smoke primarily aromatics and am often out in public. I can totally validate your 90% number when it comes to a positive response. I have also had people literally pull me to them and smell my clothes after having a smoke while driving. Along the way, my pipe smoking has also prompted others to put away cigarettes and pick up the pipe... which is very cool because we are adding one more to the club ranks. I am always sure to tell new converts about your channel, best pipe channel on KZbin hands down!

I'm mostly an aromatic smoker. I gravitated towards them after trying Englishes and Virginias. They provided the most consistent pleasure when I'm just walking smoking a bowl. There are times when I'd be going to work smoking a Latakia blend and really not enjoying it. I'd rather have some Connemara Black or Lane 1Q. Englishes are solely sit-down blends for me, which usually means at the end of the day. The only two things I ever hear about my pipe are "that smells so good" or "are you smoking the good shit(weed)?". The latter used to annoy me even though I do smoke weed, but it's usually a joke and I joke along with them unless I'm at work where I have to say it's just tobacco. Edit: I live in Canada where smoking weed isn't a big issue. Even back in the illegal days no one really ever cared. As long as you aren't at work, it's no one's business if your smoking a big fat bowl of hemp, which is what the less knowledgable who are familiar with neither cannabis or tobacco think I might be doing.

I understand exactly what you mean, I’ve been smoking a pipe for years and to date not one person has had a negative thing to say to me, in fact just the opposite, I.e omg I love the smell of pipes or mmm that reminds me of my childhood, my dad or grandad used to smoke a pipe etc etc. But when my friends smell someone standing at a bus stop smoking a cigarette for example, they say omg he/ she stinks like an old ash tray gross. So yes what you say makes perfect sense. Great post by the way.

I love smoking a pipe at ren faires. One of my favorite blends is a buttered rum-cased aromatic that I pick up every year at Scarborough Faire. Looking back I pretty much only smoke aromatics at such occasions without even thinking about it. I guess I find them more appropriate for the jovial atmosphere. So far every comment I've received has been positive, "That smells really good," or "That reminds me so much of my grandpa!"

I see pipe smoking as a solitary hobby, that you usually do when you are alone, in your room or your backyard. So, being a solitary hobby, you don't have to worry about other people's opinion over this. If you want to smoke a light blend, you smoke a light blend. If you want something deeper, you go on that. When you are alone, the things you do only concerns to you. However, when I'm in public, I do prefer people to accept me as an smoker when I'm close to them, so I fully agree with your argument. This serves also to the other aspects of life. When you are around other people, you gotta be pleasent, avoiding to do things that will keep them away from you. This is a healthy thing to do, considering that humans are social beings. I don't say you have to pretend to be something you aren't, but to keep a healthy relationship with the people around you, avoiding unnecessary conflicts. Cheers from Brazil, mate!

Like coffee, smells great to all, doesn't taste great to some. In fact my ex girlfriend when we met liked my cigars, but I mentioned hey, I own a few pipes too, and she quickly commented on no I hate pipes, my father smoked a pipe and he was awful lol

I smoked over 10 years ago without the guidance of KZbin and it was a horrible experience. Thanks to Muttonchop Piper videos I was enjoying my pipe by the second day. Now that I am just over a month in, tongue bite only happens if I neglect to properly dry my tobacco. This is a very relaxing hobby and if you are a tobacco user of any kind, pipes are much better.

Up until a few months ago, I had the tendency to pack too tightly, and tamp down too vigorously, so relights were common, and so was tongue-bite as a result. Now, I tend to pack using two steps out of the 3-step method, and I hardly ever get tongue-bite unless I smoke around 7 or 8 bowls in a day.

I made the switch from cigarettes to the pipe many years ago and as a mountain guide I would never light-up a smoke on my trails but one day at the top of a mountain and under a tree we had Finnised our lunch, out I produced the pipe to a silenced group until I lit-up with convidence and let the fragrance do its work. Talk about a game changer... I totally understand why they use the term peace-pipe. Growing up as a kid in my house, all was cool when the father was having a smoke of his pipe. 😉
