@@PeggyJo-n3d Kind of wish they didn't sell out, tbh, but I mostly agree. Dude actually has the pipes if you listen to any of his non-pop stuff, like his Led Zeppelin covers back in the day. Also, speaking of underrated musical things, Train's "Drops of Jupiter" is such an underrated masterpiece of a song.

I'm with you on this remark: amazing independence of thought and action, yet the vocals remained solid, unaffected by the extra attention neede to improvise melodies against the arrangement. John did a remarkable version of the original. Yet I'm reminded that on THIS song, Don McClean performed to my mind, the best, most sensitive version that will ever be done. Speaks tomes about the enduring nature of McClean as a a true singer/songwriter, and the brilliance of this, his greatest work.🎉 As a fellow guitarist, while I fully appreciate his desire to accompany the arrangement with his guitar, I think merely recreating the original is tastefully, job one. The Late Night band did a very thoughtful job of supporting Mayer on this also.

@bmusar Most people know the chorus, the sing along part. The verses get complicated. You can see Mayer lose his place around 5:10. "It landed foul on the grass. The players tried for a forward pass, with the jester on the sidelines in a cast..." John chunked that phrase. Absolutely no shame in that. As Dave said, it's a beast.

I felt like he wasn't completely sure about it, then we went on a journey with him, where he found the song and sound. Incredible.

I had no idea this ever occurred. Yes he messed up some ofwords, but the effort he put into all of it - from the outfit to not over signing or trying to imitate the original was well done

I remember when this song originally came out and have heard a few cover versions but nothing like this performance. The sheer amount of lyrics for a singer to memorize is a feat in itself let alone creating a musical structure to support them. This version goes right to the heart. Thanks.

The guy recieves a lot less props for the bloody beast of a guitarist that he is. The pedal swap around 5:52 where he ever so smoothly transitions into the chorus is one of the coolest moments in music history ever.
