Today we're building a bunch of things that are attached to other things, so we can bolt on the front suspension... you might call them brackets. Or mounts... is there a difference? We figured out where all our new suspension needs to live last time, so surely this should be easy, right!
Well... almost. The Crown Victoria suspension components have been located to provide a suitable geometry for our car, and nailing down the remaining mounting locations should be somewhat straightforward. However, we also need to mount the engine, and that does bring about a few more complexities.
You see, the car is short... 149 inches short to be precise. Fitting a V8 and 5 speed gearbox into it while clearing everything else is one thing, but realizing that there are fairly tight parameters for the prop-shaft (or driveshaft) creates a whole slew of other fun obstacles!
Phasing, operating ranges, Pythagorean theorem, this has it all!
In case you missed it, our 1971 Triumph GT6 is receiving a transplanted 5.3l LS4 V8 and Mustang T5 gearbox... among others things... like a Corvette Dana 36 differential... and Crown Victoria front suspension... and a bellhousing from a Jeep.
So. Not exactly your typical Triumph.
Next time we'll be working through the remaining steering geometry and getting a rack sorted out - so SUBSCRIBE so you don't miss anything!

Hi guys, really like what I have seen so far. This Triumph is one of the best looking cars, think it was called 'poor man's Jaguar' back then - but for me it's even better looking than most Jags. The only thing I am concerned is the welding of the wishbone mounts. Did you calculate the size and length of welding needed to be safe regarding dynamic stress? I guess the small weld spots were just to hold the mounts in place. But the welding should be calculated with some boundary conditions. Otherwise you might end up with a mount ripped off your frame. Hope that you are up for some constructive (literally) criticism. I look forward to your reply. Cheers from Germany.

Thank you, we agree! Beautiful little cars, and since most of them have rusted away and/or are fraught with electrical issues, they make great candidates for restomods! A friend up the street actually has a fully restored TR6 and GT6, and they are equally great though - I enjoy them both ways! :)

@@FanatikBuilds I know you are building subs slowly- those you have are the sort that will wait out this build- much like BOM. I keep running into references to them all over- I think you are doing something that can go there. They say you can put an LS into anything- but this is pretty much a one of; some Brit tucked a Jag V12 in one, but that car was started maybe two or more years ago and we've never seen the finish. This is one of my check always channels now- the build is coming along awesome, and if I can still be on to BOM from Episode three to now, your pace isn't going to run me off! My Winter popcorn order arrived just the other day and I find even though consumption was up a bit last quarter, I have plenty to wait you out! You look yo be enjoying the process with you dad- good on both of you! What you look to be building should actually be a nice car- just throwing a pile of parts together, bought with a credit card, is just a pile of parts. This will finish with blood, sweat ,tears and love in it. You will both smile every time you hear it start. Considering your engine choice requires a computer, I'm looking forward to how you tackle the wiring- the bits from the Triumph weren't much to rite home for to begin with, so it will be fairly scratch- you might have a look at Binky's- some great common sense tips there, and much detail. Ya'll really need to figure a way to increase your exposure- this is a great build and should be getting many more views and subs! Merry Christmas!
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Frederic! 🍿 You've nailed it exactly - and we are enjoying the project, thanks! Wiring is something that I am giving thought to but realistically isn't on the table for a while yet. BOM's approach with using a loom from another car was a great one, but I think for what we are wanting, we may just wire the body from scratch and use the Holley Terminator X for engine management. Still thinking on that, but that's where we are right now! I'd love to get more exposure and am trying my hardest to do so - at least things seem to finally be headed in the right direction lately! Merry Christmas to you and your family! 👍

Beautiful work as always, well done lads. One thing you might want to consider during the fore-aft motion is during a lash crossing, when you press the accelerator pedal after a tip-out. You probably have thought of this already, you will need to measure lash on your driveline and make sure north-south mounts are at the right position to dampen it so that fore-aft movement is within a defined plane to ensure nothing fouls. Assuming north-south mounts are needed, not sure how LS are mounted.
@manosfarfarelos8666
@manosfarfarelos8666 3 жыл бұрын
Looking back at the east-west mounts, fore-aft play on the engine will be minimal, if at all. Perhaps any fore-aft movement from the driveline will pass as vibration in the cabin, which remains to be seen. Definitely something to check though 🙂 I'll have to admit, north-south seems far easier to mount than east-west, especially when the transverse mounts are not on the same height.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
@@manosfarfarelos8666 thanks for the advice and keeping an eye out for us! If I'm on the same track of mind, I think we should be fine, the driveshaft yoke for the transmission is a slip yoke, and since it's independent rear suspension the diff doesn't move at all - so nothing should be forcing the engine forward/backward unless I'm missing something! The Poly mounts should also help mitigate a lot of potential movement... At a sacrifice of NVH though for sure! Cheers!! 🙂👍

Awesome build , I am a mechanic for 53 years building a cobra, Also with off the wall parts, Mazda rx8 suspension front and rear ( well Mazda spend many millions developing one of the best handling sports cars around, why reinvent the wheel, motivation is 350hp nissan V8 ( 200k miles reliability) 6 speed manual gearbox and a nissan LSD 3.6 , in the meantime I am using factory type thickness steel of 3mm for my brackets and chassis rails , for many reasons, 1 it's easier to cut and work, 2 it's lighter, 3 it's cheaper, 4 it's the same as a factory car that weights 50% more, I am aiming at 1000kg,

Very nice! Yes the 1/4" plate we used in places here was probably overkill vs a properly engineered and gusseted 1/8" part. Trying to be more conscious of this as I progress in building ... I'd rather be overkill than under ... but there's no need for excess! We're also expecting to be around 1050kg or so 👌👍

Good stuff as always. Probably want some vertical triangulation on those mounts in the direction of torque from the engine.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Andrew! Since they're mounted at 90 degrees to the block (and it's a longitudinal layout) rotational forces from the engine will be transferred straight through the mounts, so there shouldn't be any need for that. Fore/aft movement should negligible due to the slip-yoke in the driveline and fixed rear end. All in all, I think it should be good, but thanks for keeping an eye out for us! 👍 Merry Christmas!

After watching several restoration and creation projects like this one, in which chunks of metal get reshaped, if I was to undertake one, I would start by investing the $500 - $1,200 or so for a plasma cutter. Even without a CNC setup, they look so much more convenient for hacking out shapes than the other methods, (gas torches, bandsaws, and grinders).

Definitely enjoying your work! Initially I was thinking you were just a BOM/Project Binky wannabe, but your quality and efforts definitely qualify as being an excellent and inspirational channel. But it would be nice to see some more effort in keeping weight to a minimum, though. For example, the mounting flanges for the engine mounts could have been whittled down so that only the absolute minimum peripheral material was there. And any unnecessary material in the middle of the flange plates could also be removed. Even the round standoff tubes could have been done with cross drilled square tube. And the same thing applies to the chassis. Hole sawing and slotting as much of the tube work as is safely possible could remove significant kilos. Perhaps once the chassis is complete, you could make a jig from it and build a second 'RS' type chassis with maximum weight reduction??? Anyways, given your limited resources and space you guys are doing some fantastic work!
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for saying that - I've always enjoyed imitation and feel that KZbin is a community which works best when we acknowledge each other's existence! For that reason I've included references to BOM, Top Gear, Donut Media, Mighty Car Mods and even other channels I enjoy like This Old Tony, Taylor Ray, and Mark Rober. Sometimes their subtle nods, other times they're hard to miss, but on the whole I enjoy it when channels I follow reference each other! As for the weight, we have been weighing things as we go to keep an eye on what the end result should be, and so far we're pretty happy with things. Keep in mind neither of us are engineers, so we'd rather err on the side of caution and not accidentally remove material from the wrong places! Also, each hole or cut takes a long time with the tools we've got, so machining out chunks of 1/4" plate isn't exactly a thrilling proposition! You get what I mean though, so thanks very much, and I hope you have a Merry Christmas! 👍

My restomod is a Porsche 914 with 996 suspension and fa20dit + 6 speed 3 pedal. 1000 kgs is the target weight with 300 whp oem block. You could have kept the engine/trans angle by rotating the diff to reduce the ujoint angles. Ujoint angles are usually opposite in oem installs but not always. With an IRS/fixed pinion location, opposite does not matter as long as the joint operating angles are equal. Ditto on gusseting the swaybar saddles used on the rear of the LCA.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Must not have explained what happened very well, but the engine and diff were already angled equally, and as lifting the engine would have put the UVs on too much of an angle we elected to adjust the angle of each end to be a bit greater (from 1.8 to 2.5 degrees)... It actually gave us the clearance we needed and improved the UV angles in the process by straightening out the driveline a bit more... so it's a win-win! Yep, we'll be adding some gussets, thanks 👍

Just a side note as these guys are doing a great job. But if anyone out there is building a project remember there are more projects that end up sitting incomplete then completed. Number one reason and these guys seem to have plenty but many run out of time and motivation. I been in the custom car building/fabrication sense 2006. One thing I have personally noticed is people get tired of building and fabrication due to have to do it the slow way. It adds a lot of time to a project not having the best tool for the job. So if you have the budget don’t be scared to purchase better tooling, it will significantly increase your skill level and speed and in return help get you to that finish line.
@FanatikBuilds
@FanatikBuilds 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Kyle - yes all too many projects have been abandoned over the years due to the sheer amount of work needed to complete them. We've almost been there at times ourselves during the bodywork earlier in the series, and even recently to a degree... but this new direction has definitely added some more interesting twists to the project and I find the research for each next step quite fun! I think the key with these projects is don't set unreasonable deadlines, as you'll just feel depressed if you don't meet them. Better to just tackle one small job after another and eventually you'll cross the last one off the list. The tooling comment is also very true, I'm never opposed to buying new tools if they will help... it's just the space they take up that can become an issue! 👍

I used to autocross a Triumph Spitfire. Negative camber was key, as much as I could crank in with the stock bolts using the OEM shims, many of them, which kept me legal for stock class. Tire wear was a little more pronounced, but the handling was much quicker. Of course you're doing an LS in a custom frame so things may be quite different. In any case, it's a great build and I'm enjoying watching it.
