Great Episode of a great show. The character development still stands up even today. I wish they would have been able to complete the second season of this show. It was popular in US markets so they started working on it, but it morphed itself into Space 1999

This episode hit me like a hammer when I saw it as a young child in the 70's on British TV. It taught me some pretty big lessons at the time: that some 'baddies' can actually be 'goodies', and that things can still end badly for a good baddie! It's the only episode I actually remember after 40+ years.

My pleasure sir. If you're in the UK I would suggest the new Network Blu-Rays of the complete series. My uploads are fan edits but I do try my best not to disturb the original story lines. I can see now that this show was very ahead of it's time, particularly for tv scifi. It tackled complex and nuanced themes, and addressed the dilemmas of individual characters, in a way that we didn't start seeing until much later. It was a 'drama' series as much as a 'scifi' series. The general tone reminds me lot of the remake of Battlestar Galactica, which I also recommend highly to anyone who's never seen it.

Thank you for posting these episodes from UFO. I recall seeing this series in America as a teen back in the mid-1970's and was blown away by the many ahead-of-their-time concepts that are now staples of many SF shows and movies. This episode in particular left me wondering just how much humanity was left in the supposedly partially lobotomized humans the aliens were using as their tools. The attack on Moonbase was probably directed by alien control emanating from the UFO, and when the UFO was destroyed the remaining human may have been freed from that control. Lots of interesting directions this episode could have gone towards, but the lack or inability of communication between Foster and the 'alien' keeps us speculating.
@FandersonUfo
@FandersonUfo 6 жыл бұрын
Mr. Nemo - Although I do like your interpretation of the "Aliens" as lobotomized homo sapiens under the direction of Alien masters that was not what the Andersons intended to portray. This is a humanoid race suffering from genetic decay travelling to earth to harvest human organs to extend their lives. The individual in the red suit is not supposed to homo sapien but Foster does manage to develop an interesting relationship with him on a human to extraterrestrial level. Tragic to have him needlessly killed in the end by a trigger happy poorly trained SHADO operative. He should have been trained to capture an Alien alive if he could? When shot the Alien was not even holding a weapon.

I very respectfully beg to differ with you; in a later episode (EP19 The Cat With Ten Lives kzbin.info/www/bejne/bWKxZmWNqtaGeZY advance to 23 mins, 45 seconds), Dr. Jackson speculates that the aliens might actually be non-physical, inhabiting the modified human bodies as he put it, like a 'vehicle', as that one of the bodies he had examined was declared to be completely 'normal'. The organ harvesting might actually have been solely for the maintenance of their human 'vehicles' to keep them operable. Which places the motivations of the alien controllers in a whole new perspective.
@FandersonUfo
@FandersonUfo 6 жыл бұрын
Good sir thank you very much. I will not dispute your knowledge of the released and therefore canon episodes. Not a favourite of mine the "one with cats" as some will call it. I think the concept of what the Aliens actually are was something that was a work in progress throughout the series. In the first episode 'Identified' one certainly gets the impression that they are a humanoid race seeking human organs for transplant to extend their lives. The musing of Straker at the end of that episode is fairly clear on the subject - Dr. Jackson's later musing on the topic notwithstanding. There was a 5 year series here that only made it to 26 episodes. Hard to say what type of Alien would have evolved eventually. I will doff my cap though to your obvious expertise of UFO. I had completely forgotten that scene with Jackson. Regards FandersonUfo

This was a series designed for an adult audience. Eventually it just got lumped together and forgotten amongst Anderson's many series for younger viewers. Great story, similar to the SF film Enemy Mine, in which two soldiers in a war, one human, one alien, meet and form a friendship and put aside their differences to survive. Love the fact the whole alien/Foster sequence is dialog free, like the Twilight Zone ep The Invaders. The final twist where his rescuers misunderstand his attempts to explain as a warning... is heart breaking.

@@FandersonUfo I know, I was wondering if anyone else had noticed as a fun thing, since it kind of works, that segment of the Mysterons theme works for the pay off the alien's reveal.

Loved this as a young kid in the 70's. Heartbreaking episode this.. Enemy Mine with Dennis Quiad was certainly influenced by this.. Mind you wasn't there a WW2 film with an American and Japanese surviving on a desert island together?

indeed the 1968 film "Hell in the Pacific" with Lee Marvin and Toshiro Mifune covered similar themes

If I were Straker, I would be livid. How did a UFO GO UNDETECTED by SID and Moonbase?
@FandersonUfo
@FandersonUfo 7 жыл бұрын
Mr. Dandy these are edited versions not complete episodes. There is a scene I removed where Foster explains to Straker that a large storm of meteors had been interrupting the tracking network for 3 days. I did not consider that important to the basic story-line I wanted to highlight here. I would encourage any one with a strong interest in the show to purchase the original series from the copyright holders.

FandersonUfo This was groundbreaking television at the time. Thanks for posting. I love the storylines, the futuristic fashions, the music, the characters and especially the vision of the future in 1980 from the perspective of 1970! It has brought back some great memories from my childhood!

After growing up watching the Classic " War of the World's ( t o m ) " , " Invaders from Mars " along with " Earth V the Flying Saucers " and " Invasion of the Sausermen " this one with Frank Gorshin . I had a strong belief that we would have to be ready to fight with any Alien that landed . But after I watched this episode I sorta kinda expanded my thoughts of a possibility of us working together . That's been over 50 years ( I'm 62 now ) . After seeing all of the Crap that we do to each other . I've come to the conclusion that we are more of a threat to them .

As was taught to me, we inflict casualties on the Enemy in an effort to break their will and prevail in war. If you view them as people you murdered you may go insane from guilt. Only Ants and Men wage dispassionate total war...

I remember this episode. And the very similar episode of Battlestar Galactica a few years later when Starbuck is stranded on a planet with a lone Cylon and a truce and friendship develops, but the unfortunate Cylon - like the alien here - ends up being killed.
