to be fair a lot of movies and TV series share the same problem; eccentric side characters are only so cool and mysterious because we don't see them much, know not much about them and can speculate what made them the way the are. but once they're promoted to MC, or get the same amount of screen time, they swiftly become boring because they took away what made them special in the first place.

You forgot to talk about the recruiting video in the background playing the Imperial March music during the Solo name scene. Is the Imperial March being played by the Storm Trooper band? You never see Storm Troopers playing instruments. When Darth Vader is walking around is he aware that the music is being played? This recruiting video in the background changed my thoughts on this predicament so much.

The Solo writers glaze over the fact that Han trained in the Imperial Academy as a pilot (which is from the OT lore that you'd see on the back of '80s action figure packages, if anyone remembers). I also wish I'd seen Han actually training as a pilot. But the movie also makes it clear that Chewie is 190 yrs old. These instances explain the moment of them suddenly piloting the MF for me & why it's nothing like the Mary Sue Rey moment in TFA.

I really think all the scenes are so dark to save on budget. Allows for minimal practical background/environment needed and also little to no cgi background needed. For a movie that went way wayyy over budget and was 85% reshot, I think it's a probable explanation

We only see Rey driving the landspeeder she built herself; she says nothing about flying ships around Jakku for fun. Luke has a T-16 airspeeder shown in his garage and in the model he plays with, and he mentions flying it and shooting its laser cannon in dialogue in the film.

I have NEVER seen an aircraft mechanic fly a plane, I doubt I would ever see a spaceship one do it either... or afford to have one... Rey=Luke, yes, Luke shouldnt have been able to fly a spaceship, just like Rey shouldnt have. Rey=Han, nope... Han is a pilot, she wasnt. That is it.
@Spartan_83
@Spartan_83 6 жыл бұрын
She also got a lot of practice on a looted flight simulator. She also sneaked into it at night to practice with the controls. From the novelization of the documentary. How does a ten-year-old Anakin, a slave child, know how to pilot a jet engine chariot and later a space fighter? I'm guessing the force played a big part and Rey is one of the most powerful force users.

@cjwrench07 4 жыл бұрын
trauko1388 Han was never a pilot previously thats the problem with his origin story. Han was a *foot soldier* while serving in the empire, and at most stole hover-cars when he was young. That’s not really confusing to learning how to fly a interstellar spacecraft. Rey at least is implied worked on the local ships as a mechanic(“that ship hasn’t flown in years”), and has knowledge of how spaceships work from her time growing up an economic slave in that recycle&repair depot. I literally learned how to properly operare multiple types and years of firetrucks, because I’m a fire equipment mechanic. Being the local mechanic solves all the problems with Rey’s knowledge of how to pilot. There is no story reason though why Han is a great pilot from day 1, except for midiclorians make him a great pilot.

Regarding people not complaining about Han being able to fly: I think there are two reasons, 1 Who even watched this in theaters to complain? 2. My thoughts when watching the film - wasn't he in the naval academy for the Empire for awhile before he got kicked out for attitude? I assumed he learned to fly there as he tells the recruiter he wants to join the navy and become a pilot, though I admit I may not have paid enough attention to how quickly he got kicked out of the navy and made a trooper.

I am Team LowExpectations/SoloEntertainedMe regarding this movie. This was not the movie that I was looking for, but with a bucket of popcorn it entertained me. However, I am curious as to whether or not L3-37 was a remnant of the Lord and Miller cut which Ron Howard tried to make more sincere? Maybe that is why L3-37 scenes were simultaneously oddly funny and oddly serious.

ScreenJunkies News The reason Han's dice are so important and why Lucasfilm made a big deal about them in The Last Jedi and Solo is because in the Expanded Universe, Han uses those same dice to win the Falcon from Lando. So Han keeps them in the cockpit as a sort of trophy. Supposedly he used them in Solo as well, but I didn't see them in the final scene.

Dan, it's because people just wanted an excuse to hate on Rey and call her a Mary Sue, even though she's not. In fact, she actually states that she's flown ships before, she's just never flown them out of atmosphere. People just ignore that part. Also, there's probably that feeling of "of course he can fly the Falcon, he's Han Solo"

Her first time using the cannons on the Falcon, she kills three tie-fighters in a single shot. She's definitely got a lot of Sue-like qualities. Now for me, the most important aspect of a Sue is whether or not the Sue-traits takes you out of the movie, if it breaks your immersion. Rey doesn't do that for me, so I don't classify her as such. But I can really easily see why people can consider her a Sue, because she pretty much earns nothing she can do, can do everything, is liked by everyone, and her biggest problem is that she misses her parents. If she'd been written into someone's fanfic about the original trilogy... From the Han side of things, people who are likely to care most likely already know his backstory, which is that he's had training as a pilot in the Imperial Academy. It's really all his "I want to be a pilot" lines that don't make sense, as by that point, he already should have been a pilot... one who has won the Corellian Stripes. It also helps that people who like Solo are a lot more open to the idea that it has flaws, so there isn't a need to list every single last detail, as opposed to, say, the Ma-rey Sue factor, where there is quite a bit of evidence supporting the idea, yet you have plenty of people saying, "Nope, not at all, not in the slightest."

Can someone explain to me how escape pods work in this movie? The falcon has 3 escape pods. These pods are attached one on top of another in a way that you would have to crawl through the engines to get to the people go here part of the pod. Which is semi ok-ish except they clearly have no way to get in them that way...? BUT!! To get to escape pod 1 you have to crawl through escape pods 2 and 3!!! How does that work? The crew just rock paper scissors it to figure out who keeps climbing to the next pod before the ship explodes? Why?? Just why???

I personally don’t mind Ray flying great right away but Han did have pilot training from the empire academy for a few year before he got kick down to infantry so That’s were he sharpened his pilot skills.

It's available as a deleted scene, but was cut for pacing issues. It jumps to 'three years later'.

22:27 How long can we still use the term tape for film/audio. Sooner or later people won't understand the phrase.

Maybe Solo is the empire's version of John Doe, like if you don't have a last name, you get Solo? Yeah nah!

That officer giving him the surname is awful, but as I was watching it, not knowing that was coming, I was like, "Yeah, Han would give himself a name like that. That's cool, he's going to give himself that badass last name!" Then the officer said it and I was like ". . . he'd be proud of using a name given to him by an Imperial bureaucrat?" That was stupid.

You guys missed his first flight on screen wasn't the Falcon, it was the transport after the pilot got killed during the train heist. That was also where the Life Debt came in because he saved Chewie twice during it. Also, on the train - trains haul more for less power/fuel use. That's the sole reason, just like how trains still transport far more containers of goods across the United States than trucks. Flying things is actually the least efficient way to move things between two points, so why use it when there are other options?

My biggest problem with Solo was that there was this whole droid rights fight. This movie takes place in the past. Why wasn't this a bigger issue in the other films? It's played for a joke? What are they even trying to say? Do we want rights for C3PO and R2? Are we supposed to? Plus there was that thing where the girl rips off her helmet and we're supposed to be surprised - I guess because she's a girl? Is that still being played for reveals? That the masked action character is a woman? I assumed she had to be someone's daughter or something, that her being a woman was not enough. Turns out we still don't think women can fight, fly, or space?

I think the point of the Robin Hood girl reveal isn't that she's female, but that she's a kid.

If that's true, they probably should have hired someone younger. It read to me like it was that she was female, but I hope you're right. That would make me feel better. Though not much, because most characters in these films seem young to me. Young people doing space stuff and being hardcore is not really a new thing for the Star Wars films.

It think the point was that she was a redhead. Like how could a person with no soul be the good guy.

Maybe the droid thing is an Easter egg for the next Story Movie. How the Droids were first made. Their propagation throughout the galaxy. Then their massive uprising, costing millions of lives, almost killing off of the old republic, and their eventual defeat. We then go though the thousands of years of bad blood and enslavement in the current story. All leading up to the new uprising lead by General C-3PO, and President R2-D2, in which they kill off all The Force bugs, and finally ending the Jedi-Sith War. Which FINALLY brings peace to the galaxy.

I suspect they brought Maul back to show if you can survive being cut in half in this universe then they can reuse Snoke if they decide to reverse what Johnson did in Last Jedi.
