I hope you see this comment guys. THANK YOU, thank you for bringing up the “lip service” to the character with the facial difference (birthmark). I’m saddened to hear that they still tried to hide her scar and it will be interesting to see how others respond. Because you’re right there’s a floor of beauty you must be on in order to be cast and the fact that it’s 2018 and that STILL happening is stupid.

The movie lost me from the very beginning with the title card, because they bypassed the opportunity to have the title be part of the movie. I mean in the book it literally says once you put on the headset the first thing the game asks is "Ready Player One?". I mean they even went through the trouble of animating going into the headset with him, then you just... cut to black with white titles? I'm with Joe on this one, I got no magic or wonder from the film.

I didn't HATE this movie, but I really didn't care for it, which is a shame because Spielberg is my favorite director and the story has a lot of promise I didn't care about the characters or the conflict. There weren't any real stakes. There's the whole "ugly" thing that made me mad TBH. Maybe worst of all though, the message is crammed and feels insincere. And it felt like it didn't understand nerd culture. It felt like an imitation of nerd culture. It advocates the "real fans" bs and acts like being a fan is just memorising trivia. It never talks about WHY anyone loves nerd stuff. Also I didn't believe for a MOMENT that the real world was an awful place where the only thing worth time or effort is the oasis. No one looks malnurashed. Everyone is clean and has nice clothes and a place to live. Like, the worst it gets is the idea of living in a trailer. Oh no

Plus the CEO's plan is to tell people they shouldn't be engrossed in the oasis and pop culture...by going through the oasis and combing through and obsessing over pop culture
@janstankiewicz98166 жыл бұрын
Hadn't read the book, so I'm going by what I remembered from the movie. They didn't show malnourished, but they implied harsh poverty with female lead's family story - plus, "loyalty centers" were just yet another form of slavery. To me, that part of her story - losing her parents due to corporate greed - would be a reason enough to be very careful who does she let into her IRL world, much deeper and compelling than any flaw in her looks. I will also point out that calling it pay to win doesn't cut it for me - I was under the impression that the oasis wasn't designed with that in mind, but it did enable exchange of virtual goods, but due to popularity of it it became more viable than any real world currency. IOI was the main supplier of 'haptics' and in-game powerups, which they farmed and auctioned. I've seen better movies and I didn't particularly enjoy "Ready Player One", however, I think it's the last "Spielberg movie" I'll ever need to see. I don't think he can go beyond that and make something that would make the world go "oh yes, Spielberg is back!". He might've depleted his deposits of "whimsy" :) What was your favorite part, tho? Mine was the short audio cue when the Zemeckis Cube was used.
@chrisfrancis13466 жыл бұрын
Joe is spot on about not caring about the characters. This movie ripped the heart out of the book the moment they let P and A meet IRL before the end.

I just discovered the commentaries after years of watching the main honest trailers and love the commentary and I’m confused why the commentaries were on a different channel for so long. That being said I tried so hard to pass it by but couldn’t help myself and didn’t see it mentioned in the comments (didn’t scroll to the end though) but canaries die of asphyxiation and not gas in mines. That way if the canary dies, then the miners know they shouldn’t go deeper because the air will be too thin for humans.

HONESTLY, ready player one can become a pretty great franchise : Its got thousands of cool and unique unexplored planets like Ludus and some other physics defying planets. Directors can let their imagination run wild with a concept like the OASIS. its got some complexity cuz of a parallel storyline set in the real world(Things happening in the real world and virtual world simultaneously). Due to this you can add some lit scenes in the movie too( like the scene where the bad guy is trapped in the OASIS, but doesn't realise it). The real world reaction/effect of what happened in the OASIS and vice-versa is a great source of humour. A lot of physics defying shit can happen in the OASIS(telekinesis, time travel, shape shifting, flying, measuring heartbeat from far away etc.). I say again, Directors can let their imagination run wild with a concept like the OASIS. The characters in the virtual world most of the times have never really met each other in the real world, this can be used to add a lot of intellectual stuff in the movie and adds a lot of suspense and the character interactions and the character reveals are actually very funny. I liked the movie, but anyone that has read the book will agree that speilberg barely managed to capture 5% of the vastness of the OASIS. There are thousands of cool planets in the Oasis which weren't shown in the movie.

Ready Player One wasn't as embarassing as I was expecting it to be with all of the references... but it was still a mess of a movie. So little attention paid to detail. None of the actual tests for the hidden keys we're interesting or realistic at all. This movie should have been like Edge of Tomorrow, thousands of people trying new creative things each life to figure out the game. Right off the bat the main guy figures out the secret to the race in the most boring way possible. I wanted to see more of how this VR changed life in the real world, that was the most interesting part of the movie to me, and it was glossed over.
@TheWisestWizards6 жыл бұрын
I don't know, I would have cut that entire war scene at the end. I didn't feel like that added anything to the movie. And it went on forever. Spent a little more time with The Shining, I already kind of forgot how that part ended, they just found the key right away or something. That was the coolest part of the movie though, and it felt rushed. Let me lecture Steven Spielberg on how to make a movie!

I quite liked the film, which surprised me. I LOVED the book; it seemed like a book made just for me. The references in the book, with the exception of Ultraman, were all things with which I was intimately familiar. Using Zork AND the Tomb of Horrors AND 2112 was a complete nerdgasm. And the movie isn't the book. The stuff I like most about the book isn't in the movie at all. It's not just that they condensed the story for a different medium; they told a significantly different story. But I still really liked it.

1) The Alan joke was sooo funny 2) Dan's comment about the box office right now actually deserved more attention. It is very sad that the only movies we're seeing are comics from the 70s and 80s. There are so many excellent books in all genres, studios just don't want to invest into anything new. And when the audience gets tired, it's gonna be a massive blow, 3) Spenser comment about us being obsessed with the 60s was actually brilliant and relates to 2) and the other comment, that Oasis is basically locked in the past by the self-obsession of its creater 4) Spenser, I've played Second Life, there were no flying dicks. Everyone was super tall and super sexy. I never figured why everybody had to be that tall. But sex was everywhere. Something which was missing in "Ready player one". Which was weird. Second Life was all about sex. And before it got paid and full of kids and pedophiles, it was quite funny.
