In Germany we actually have a recipe called "Fanta-Kuchen" (Fanta cake). It uses Fanta to make it fluffy and sweeten it. Maybe that's a remnant? 🤔 Edit: Thanks for all the likes! I have been told that the Fanta is for sweetness, but reading the recipe it might primarily be for Orange flavour, havn't looked it up yet. For everyone interested, here's the recipe I used multiple times before: For the dough: 350g wheat flour 1 packet of baking powder 230g sugar 1 packet of vanilla sugar 1 pinch of salt 4-5 eggs 200ml orange soda 130ml cooking oil (e.g. sunflower oil) Butter or margarine for the pan For the icing: 250g powdered sugar 6-7 tbsp orange soda It is basically just mixed to a dough (first the dry stuff, then oil, eggs, fanta) as with any other cake and baked at 180C. You can do a lot of creative things with it. A favourite of mine would be to use two layers with (sour) cream and tangerine in between.

From what I read about M&Ms it was actually inspired by the Spanish Civil War. Forest Mars saw Spanish soldiers eating British Smarties, chocolates covered in a hard candy shell, during the war and saw that the shells prevented the chocolates from melting in your hands. It basically inspired him to recreate them as M&Ms. For the Americans reading this, British Smarties are different from the hard candy tablets you might be familiar with. Up here in Canada the American Smarties are called Rockets to avoid any confusion with the British chocolates.

Holy sh*te, that was truly a terrible ad from Coke. I can only assume nobody in the room when that decision was made had the slightest interest in, you know, actual history. On a related note, my father was in the US Army stationed in West Germany in the early 1970s. He spoke German and enjoyed interacting with the locals. He recalled that on Hitler's birthday, some of the older Germans would quietly remind each other, "today is the Fuhrer's birthday." Dad said that a time or two he didn't think the Germans thought anyone was listening who understood, not expecting the American soldier seated next to them to be able to speak German. It wasn't that they were giving each other the Nazi salute. But the undertone of the conversation was definitely as follows. "Hans, remember that today is Hitler's birthday?" "Yes, yes, Fritz, of course I remember, as do you." "Hans, do you remember early on, when the times were good, before the war, when he first took over and made us feel powerful again after we'd been on our fucking knees? He made us feel like we could conquer the world and we nearly did?" "Yes Fritz, yes, of course I remember, as do you, because that was the central event of the prime of our youth. We also both know it ended with millions dead, Germany in ruins, and that today nobody talks about it. We can't talk about it, but we'll never forget about it either, how could we? Now let's drink our beer and talk about something else."
