Being a composer of contemporary music, the Pulitzer prize is just about THE highest honor you can receive. Composers may not care about a Grammy, but the Pulitzer Prize is hands-down a highly coveted honor. The fact that an artist outside of that large sphere has won the award is absolutely game changing. There are many composers who have a vested interest in hip-hop and rap culture. The implications are immense, fascinating, and daunting all at the same time.

I have this nagging feeling that they only gave Kendrick the Pulitzer because of his fame more than the content of the album. Just to get some publicity and attention. This is the first time I seen Pulitzer Prize trending on Twitter, so I'm not saying they didn't actually respect rap as art, but if DAMN. wasn't so groundbreakingly popular, they wouldn't have given it to him. Because TPAB and GKMC are definitely more deserving, but didn't have near the popularity of DAMN. when they came out.

I can relate to this most through what the film awards go through. When an artist is 'robbed' of an award from a previous ceremony, often the academy will give it to the one that was robbed a few years later as an acknowledgement but usually for something less deserving i.e. Leo DiCaprio won the Oscar for The Revenant after he was robbed for Wolf of Wall Street and Django Unchained.

IS IT WICKEDNESS? IS IT WEAKNESS? YOU DECIDE! ARE WE GOING TO LIIIIIIVE? OR DIEEEEEEEEE! This album is about duality of all men. It’s songs based on pure emotion . Mood congruent memory. OD & Section 80, were his underground coronation as west coast king. GKMC, is his coming out party, introducing the world to his story. TPAB is his analysis of blackness in America DAMN is about the individual. It’s all of the sins, it’s about belief ,GOd, its FEAR, its LOVE, its LUsT, its LOYALTY, yeah you get the point. I disagree, but will have to make a channel as successful as yours to get my opinions heard the way you do. Great job in that btw. Regardless if I agree or not, your reviews always entertain!
