The genius of DAMN being an album that tells 2 different stories depending on the order of the songs is phenomenal . That is terrific writing in itself. Then, there is the context and flow of the stories combined with great music. It is a great piece if work. It is a great literary piece when considered fully. So was TPAB of course, but DAMN's reversibility is it's genius.
@derpmcgerp8062Күн бұрын
@TheNormanInvasion it IS a literary piece. That's what music is best at. Every single song on the album has a purpose and is an important piece of the puzzle. The story is a complete circle. There are a LOT of lyrics that can hold one meaning when played in one order that hold a completely different meaning when played in the other order. Kendrick strikes a good balance between vague enough lyrics while still having it be dense with content. It's not like any other hip-hop album, despite it deceptively (and intentionally) sounding like it is. And Kendrick Lamar is not just "a black guy". I could understand that argument if it was ANYBODY else winning it, but genuinely, Kenny's albums are more creative and inspired than the vast majority of musical artists. You can even consider a decent chunk of TPAB and DAMN to not even be rap in the first place. The channels "Digging The Greats" and "TennisThom" made some great videos explaining it better.

The people who say "Kendrick deserves it, but not for DAMN." make no sense. The prize has always caught composers on lesser-known pieces. It kind of comes down to what piece strikes the judges that year, so you end up with great composers winning with whatever they wrote that year, and not for their famous stuff. Charles Ives won for his third symphony, not for his far more innovative and characteristic 2nd symphony or Concord Sonata. Reich won for a late work, and not for a game-changer like Music for 18 Musicians or It's Gonna Rain, and some really important composers like John Cage never won at all.

The only thing i don't agree in all of the comments i read about this is that he shoudn't have won it for DAMN. Because the award is given for the best work of the year, and I truly can't see no other album as acclaimed as DAMN. this year. It has a 95/100 on metacritic. It topped the far majority of "best of 2017" lists. If there's something unfair about this is that the pulitzer seemed to ignore all mainstream music prior to DAMN., and not the fact that it won this year.

It would be nice seeing people who wouldn't all normally compete in such a way as to create music that simply outclasses itself every year. Sure it might not suit everybodies sonic palet but it serves as a beacon for some young kid who has only just started music and would have probably never have known that musicians could win such a distinguished and charming achievement ever in their lives. Even if that wasn’t the standard, DAMN is still a deserving album. I can’t agree that it would’ve been something to be upset about to begin with. I wonder why it’s a concern for Kendrick, but the conversation never happened when other artist won for their “lesser” works… anyways.

Mad city is def my favourite Kendrick album. I know people love the butterfly, but idk, it just doesn't feel the same way maad city does, despite there being a lot of things happening on tpab that would theoretically sound cooler. I think tpab has some cooler tracks on it's own, but as an album I've got to say maad city. Damn is more consistent than both, but aesthetically more 'out there' but it's combined with more consistent songwriting in such a way that it's still accessible, but as an album it feels a bit like he's jerking off or something. And saying that feels kinda wrong imo, because there's a lot of self-reflection and introspection that hits harder than his previous works, like fear is my favourite track on damn, but also songs like dna. Idk, it's probably because I'm not religious and also because generally the ending is cool but it's not the fitting ending, which I why I believed in the double album conspiracy for a while.

My only real complaint with him winning is the assertion from people and articles that Hip Hop is now “high art” or that him winning proves Hip Hop is now impactful and meaningful or whatever. When Hip Hop has always been recognized as “high art” since more than a decade ago. It didn’t need an award to prove that. Are we going to forgot about The National Recording Registry? And how The Message by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five became the first among 50 other impactful recordings (Early Edison cylinders, Rhapsody in Blue, Fireside chats, NYPO recording of The Rite of Spring, Kind of Blue, and The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan) to be archived in the Library of Congress?

I’m going to be very honest here, if you really cared about all the things you mentioned, you wouldn’t have a complaint. It does give further elevation for the genre. “It didn’t need an award to prove that”…. What are you saying here? That the album didn’t deserve the award or…. ?

I love Kendrick. One of my favorite musicians of all time. But DAMN? Not only was DAMN not even close to Kendrick's best record, but more importantly, it wasn't even the best hip hop record of the year. And while this is just my opinion, it's also the opinion of most critics of and fans of hip hop. I'm gonna criticize this the same as any other award like the grammys, it is true this is better but it's still not good. I don't know it's just...it feels like they were just like, "well Kendrick's getting pretty big and this is a good album and these lyrics are saying something so give it to him".

Lemwell7 I've heard and accepted the theory that this is a belated acknowledgement for his work on TPAB. Very awesome video! I honestly never even heard of the pulitzer prize before this whole thing, but it all definitely makes a lot more sense now for why Kendrick got it "for" DAMN. I low key felt the same way you explained it about him winning the prize. Like yeah his past albums were insane in comparison, but that's pretty much the ultimate reason for it. If DAMN would've been on the same level or greater than the other albums, it more than would've easily still landed him the prize, and then we would've seen more people understanding of why he got it right now. Just be grateful that he got one at all, and let it show that his past work is still very much relevant in the decision. Kendrick has become insanely huge in comparison to what he was previously.

Hi Adam! I watched bits of your 5 hour scales video and was really excited/inspired by your idea of going through the circle of 5ths in a triangle 4 times (3x4=12). I went through using the same "formula" to make a 3 squares (4x3=12) as well as a hexagon (6x2=12) sequence. The sequence for the square is going up a 6th, 6th, 7th, 4th, 6th, 6th, 6th, 4th, 7th, 6th, 6th. At first glance the sequence looks random but upon further inspection is actually itself backwards (like tacocat) The hexagon sequence was just a 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 4th, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd, 2nd. As a percussion major I love the channel and appreciate the inspiration! This will help when thinking of scales sequences in drum corps over the summer. This also offers some creative ideas as far as composition. P.S. Really love Sungazer and your other projects throughout the channel. The concepts explored in "Dream of Mahjong" and "Sequence Start" cracked open my mind as far as thinking of grooves and feels. It made fivelets and sevenlets seem more accessible than previously thought.

You said loosely that the award should be given to someone who is making music for the purpose of furthering music as a wholerather than sales.. based on that, I hope that one day people like Neil Peart, the members of tool and Deftones, and many other musicians In this wing of music should win this.. these people have made excellent Rhythmic, tonal, and album composition advancements when it comes to music.. and I definitely think these genres are under represented in the winners catalog. Its a serious award, but is hard to take serious when it's only representing a couple genres. Kendrick Lamar was definitely a good first step

@benhavey41076 жыл бұрын
DAMN. is a phenomenal album, but I wish that the Pulitzer committee created separate categories for classical, jazz, and pop music. Pop music generally involves collaborative composition and especially production on a deeper level than classical music. The Pulitzer Prize up until recently was conservative even within classical music (John Cage never won, almost none of the winning works involved improvisation, indeterminacy, they even shied away from minimalism for decades). It's time for that to change. However, New Music composers have almost no exposure outside of the Pulitzer, even among classical music fans (this is a complex issue that I love talking about and am working to change). Let New Music have it's one thing! LOVE this video.

What kind of annoys me with the price, is that (as far as I can assume) the real goods that Kendrick Lamar delivers on his albums are foremost lyrical ones. The list of the producers is pretty variable, I just think a price for poetry would make far more sense to me and actually value what Kendrick Lamar himself is doing and striving in. While my concerns implicitly assume that the other people on that list worked totally isolated without any kind of input and help, which is of course not true, I still think Kendrick Lamar's main artistic product is a lyrical one. Opinions?

+Zech Drifrut Oh that was actually not my point. I think it's probably actually easier to make a beat then writing classical music, judging from my little experience. But then again the value of music shouldn't be really about how hard the piece was to create. That really has no self worth in my opinion. What I mean to say, is that most of the musical contribution like beats and such doesn't come from Kendrick Lamar, but he is being awarded for music. I could be totally off about that, It's just what i concluded from the list of producers on the Damn Wikipedia Page. There are some really great people making contributions on that album like 9th wonder though.

I would bet most of the music winners in the early years were white males. man was i happy when spalding won the grammy for best new artist and not in some jazz category. not only because it recognized jazz as an artform on a mainstream industry platform, but was very well deserved on an individual level as well. she said in an interview, when asked what she thought about beating bieber, that she was proud to bring jazz back into the limelight and helped to promote it getting recognized on such a platform. i totally agree, but she also was then and still is now one of the most intersting young artists out there in a world that is less and less about genres anymore. so this was, a consolidation choice and wasn't only a consideration choice. great. now does kendrick need the 15k? nope. not sure about the purlitzer definition here. maybe they picked the right guy at the wrong time. or got him the wrong award at this point of his career. as a maker and innovater in music he is more than just a good rapper for sure.

If you consider other awards too, many of the awards are given to more matured and renowned artists. Eg. Oscars prize. The reason is that while someone might have the most influencial work of a century written this year, most likely their career are not well deserving so much as other contenders (I am not saying this is the case all the time but most artists are in their primes around a younger age) So, it does make sense that they recognize people after they feel like the artists are matured enough and come to that tipping point where their work of years worth recognition. In awards like these its much more valuable to see someone who has changed the shape of the art and shown that they have dedicated their life than awarding what you think is the best 'piece' of the time. If you look around, there are a lot of prodigies in classical music that most likely will make groundbreaking work at some point in their life but this sort of award is for those that can sustain such an influence. Ofc exceptions can be made if you see an artist that truly shows off an aspiring work and shows a path where they will be spending a lifes work on their craft. Its just very rare to determine that for artists at a younger age.

People wanted to like Marsalis' Blood on the Fields because Marsalis had been sold as important and it was about slavery, so it was hard for critics to say, really, he bores me to tears. He's not one of the great composers/band leaders in jazz either. Threadgill was an inspired choice and I'm not clear why Adam doesn't consider it jazz, plus he's been in NYC for a while now. I do find that particular era of his career a bit opaque compared to some of his earlier work. I saw him play some of it live, and it's hard to get into. It's some of the most demanding music I've ever heard and Henry was in total control. It's his vision, however idiosyncratic, and he brings it to life.

I don't think there's any harm in the PP being strictly for 'classical'. It's a fair argument that Lamar's album could be more culturally relevant (i.e., it's pop music). But pop has it's own body of awards. It's almost like the PP is trying to be hip and saying, 'yeah, other types of music are OK with us!'. For me, it's like jazz festivals nowadays, they're getting more and more diluted to try and stay hip. Last year at the Cheltenham one (England), they invited Ben Folds. Now, I like him but I don't think he has any place at a jazz festival. The Beatles are one of the most culturally important groups but they don't need awards from bodies concerned with classical/orchestral, jazz, folk, country, or choral-death-brass-xylophone genres.

By the way, I just discovered "Become Ocean" by John Luther Adams and I think it is a beautiful Pulitzer price ! (2014)

I think Kendrick's prize is also a little late. But only by three years. The gap's getting smaller. P.S. I think this is generally a problem with recognizing artists' work immediately. An album needs a bit of time to gain traction and stand the test of time. Something might truly be have "classic" potential as it's coming out, but what makes it classic is it's just as good over time. It's unlikely that an award board is going to reliably and accurately gauge the importance of a piece of music the same year it came out.

You're looking at 1985 looking for Duke Ellington. You do remember that it's a prize for music "performed or recorded during the year"? "Take the A Train" was written in 1939 and the Pullitzers for music started in 1943. I think Ellington's best period predated the Pullitzers. You're absolutely right about Shape Of Jazz though.

I'm only two minutes in , and a question I feel like everyone should ask themselves about music is 'why is classical music the definition of art music?'. Don't get me wrong , I think classical music (I.e Western classical tradition, not classical period) is brilliant (it's why I trained classically) but it's by no means 'the most artistic' of musical practices. I have a whole bunch of words to say on the topic , but I'm not going to right now as it's 3am , and I'm typing on my phone...

I'll just say that Kendrick was entered because there is a lot of genre-crossing with him. Is he Hip-Hop influenced by jazz? Or is he Jazz influenced by Hip hop? Either way, to successfully cross the genres with purpose and deliberation is what's impressive. Does Kendrick deserve it? Not in my opinion, but I can't accurately say he didn't.

Honestly I don't think Kendrick is as great as people make him out to be. I think there are a number of hip hop albums from this generation that I would put above his discography, even though I do really like TPAB and GKMC. But, Kendrick is very well studied and pays respect to the early hip hop classics while making good modern day hip hop. While I do think there are better hip hop artist than him, for what he makes I'm ok with him being the poster boy of hip hop. There are artist who are a lot more adventurous and are pushing the genre in creative ways, but Kendrick has managed to perfectly walk the line between being creative and artistic and also being accessible. That in itself is an achievement.

Conceptually, it's a continuing TPAB, and the production isn't as good, but given the pop influence, I'd say it was well done. Structurally, I would say it Rivals TPAB if or probably is superior to it. It was well thought out... Gaining popularity and critical acclaim was difficult back then, so it was impressive pulling off in retrospect.

What happened to Rock and it's million sub-genres? It seems like it got skipped.
@cometcourse3816 жыл бұрын
The genre has stagnated beyond belief and there hasn't been a worthwhile artist or record in the "millions" of sub-genre since Midori's "Shinsekai" in 2010.
@tylerbrown80986 жыл бұрын
Sure, over half a century after it's inception. Rap/hip-hop, on the other hand, has been around for a significantly shorter time period, and it's only in the last dozen years that it's really been accepted into mainstream pop at all. The genre is getting all this recognition and praise for "artistic merit" that Rock was snubbed for it's entire lifespan as a growing genre, which makes me think this move by the Pulitzer is less about "recognizing artistic merit" and more about "not fading into irrelevance as music snobs."
@cometcourse3816 жыл бұрын
Oh, I thought you meant during the past year or so. Sorry about that, but I do agree with you. Personally, I don't give a single shit about the Pulitzer prize or awards in general, but it is kind of weird to see the same kind/type of art being praised over and over.

Extract that seems especially relevant from my article on Ellington, Jazz and whether jazz should be thought of as classical [felicitascollective.blogspot.co.uk/2017/06/is-jazz-classical.html]: " Pulitzer Prize winning composer John Harbison, when asked about broadening the scope of the Pulitzer prize to include all “serious” music (not just European art music but jazz too), called it ‘a horrible development. If you were to impose a comparable standard on fiction you would be soliciting entries from the authors of airport novels.’ In 1965, the jury of the Pulitzer Prize decided to award Duke Ellington ‘a token award’ for his overall output as a composer (the Pulitzer is an award for a single piece of music), but the award was overturned by the Pulitzer board. Nat Hentoff recalled what Ellington said to him the next day: ‘I’m hardly surprised that my music is still without official honor at home. Most Americans still take it for granted that European-based - classical music, if you will - is the only really respectable kind. By and large, in this country, jazz has always been the kind of man you wouldn’t want your daughter to associate with.’ It wasn’t until 1997 that Wynton Marsalis became the first jazz musician to get the award (only in 1996 had George Walker become the first black composer to receive the award). I don’t think any Wynton fans were really into Blood on the Fields. I dig his progressive early 80’s bop stuff and his straight ahead traditional stuff recently and also his classical solo repertoire but the third stream stuff can alienate both sides
