The thing that really shocked me about this release is that despite the emphasis on loudness which is endemic in modern remixes of older albums, they managed to keep the soundstage so expansive and lush and added so much detail to every element. For the first time in my life - having listened to this album thousands of times - I heard a new instrumental layer on She Said She Said. Even more than that, the vocal harmonies are so crisply defined that I can actually delineate each individual beatle's part. Same for the instrumentals. Even more than the harmonies, this remix really did Ringo's drumming justice. They really mixed to the goldilocks zone for his crash and ride. I also love the fact that they included the mono cut in Disc 5. Overall, a surprisingly lovely re-release. And the new music videos are also absolutely beautiful.

I haven't heard Fantano's videos on the other Beatles remixes, but as an audio professional in the field, it's clear this is out of his wheelhouse. Of course it's his platform, he can do with it whatever he wants, but it does kind of bother me that he's speaking to a captivated audience as if he's knowledgable on something he's not. One of the biggest changes with Revolver was the STEREO MIXES. Revolver was recorded on 4-track tape...for those unfamiliar, in the Pro Tools era today, every individual instrument/vocal or "input" has it's own track. You can tweak it as you like, change the level as you like. They did not have that luxury back then. Multiple instruments got recorded to a single tape, multiple tapes got bounced down... This album never got a true stereo remix because all we have today of the recording sessions is the four-track master tapes, where many instruments live on one tape. However, Giles Martin got permission and help to use the outstanding AI software used for the Get Back documentary, which learns what each individual instrument sounds like. It goes, "oh, this is what John Lennon sounds like," and removes that from the master track so you can edit it individually. It's impossible. It's like pulling pen ink out of a paper; it should be permanent. Or that's the way it's been for years, but it seems like that's all going to change. What I hear on the new Revolver mixes is instrument separation like never before. I GASPED the first time I heard the new Eleanor Rigby mix. The strings were a whole piece before, one thing sitting in the track. But when that song came on, they all hit me--INDIVIDUALLY, in different spots than my brain remembered. It's insane. What did Anthony have to say about the track? "The strings maybe have a little compression?" The ENTIRE fucking sound of the original mix was compression. This was the album that made compression the sound of rock. It's been established as such for years. It's an industry reference point. The new mix didn't "add compression," it breathed life into things. He may have had some good insights later--I didn't make it past song #2. I just couldn't believe what he wasn't hearing.
@xxEzraBxxx2 жыл бұрын
The Eleanor Rigby track used no AI. Each member of the string quartet were recorded on tracks 1-4 with their on mic and then bounced to track 1, with tracks 2-4 with vocal harmonies. They mixed the pre-bounce string quartet tapes with the vocals. Other tracks used AI when no pre-bounce tapes existed. Fantano may think there is compression simply because the strings were miked as close to the strings as possible.

wish you had remarked on the new mixes for paperback writer & rain too. some of their best singles from this era, & this redux really did them justice. overall though i think this release was a great balance of respecting the original intentions of the engineers who did the first mixes while also providing some great balance with the stereo imaging. more pared back than the in-your-face modern re-imagining we saw in the last few super deluxe packages. much respect to peter jackson & the team who designed the crazy AI tech that made this possible. i’ve been listening to this album since i was 5, & without any context, i always loved how dramatic the panning was. & after studying audio & doing mixing of my own, i still love the super dramatic originals. you can almost see the engineers turning the knobs. so i was kind of nervous going into this one, but this was a fun experiment and i love it. a lot of these legacy artists seem to feel the need to keep pumping out anniversary editions & such to stay relevant, but i really hope the beatles just leave it at this. i don’t know what else they could do that would make it worth it.

The editor's note at 1:17 is wrong. Every Beatles album up to and including the White Album came out in mono AND stereo. The original 60s stereo mixes have been the "standard" versions of most of the albums pretty much since the end of the 60s, even though the mono versions were the standard ones IN the 60s. The new remixes aim to improve on those 60s stereo mixes, which had some quirks and limitations based on the technology of the time.

Just a note about your note at 1:23 : At the time the Beatles albums were released both in mono and stereo, but the recordings were made with mono in mind, that’s why the first stereo mix is that weird (and because there were only 4 individual tracks). So the 2009 version on Spotify isn’t a remix but a remaster of the original 1966 stereo mix

Hey Anthony I know this will get buried but I’ve never watched your videos, but I like what you said about this album. From one music nerd to another I am glad you are making these videos. Only one thing, On Tomorrow Never Knows the sitar noise is actually a reverse guitar solo. Harrison wrote the music he wanted, played it in reverse and then they played the tape backwards so that they could get that sitar noise but cleaner

I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact their singles Rain and Paperback Writer were included and remixed! I hadn't heard the songs before cuz I had never explored any of their singles, I was interested in what you had to say about their new mixes

@@Spellchec We don’t really know because all we have is a demo. However it seems that John wrote the verse melody and then Paul wrote the verse lyrics. Then Paul combined that with his chorus

The mono version is still the best for this album, but it's great that the stereo version is much better now compared to the original 60s stereo version

I love how the 2022 remaster makes the decision to leave in the mistakes as well. At the end of Good Day Sunshine you can hear the drum track literally come to a screeching pause on the 4-track reel. Rather than erase this defect, the remaster makes it even more obvious. I think that’s a very cool thing.

You should do a quick review for the ones you missed (including Sgt. Pepper's) and include them all in one video. I think it would do well in terms of views, even if it's not recent
@jacobelkins18142 жыл бұрын
actually abbey road was the first beatles album mixed originally in stereo. source from “recording the beatles.” that’s why it sounded inconsequential compared to the others. the mono mixes have always been held in higher regard by the engineers that recorded them because that’s where they put all their energy in and these new remixes were taken from the mono tracks.

About ''Got to Get You Into My Life'', the ONE thing that I really wanted was for the drum to be louder, especially the fills (they're almost inaudible in the original mono mix). They're better now, but I feel like the track's dynamism and punchiness could benefit from louder drumfills.
@weirdalfan1242 жыл бұрын
The song’s very horn centered so the drums being in the background i think serve it a bit more though i wouldn’t’ve minded them being more out there
