One of the most poorly-programmed games I’ve ever seen. I think I remember the instruction manual actually saying something like, “if something weird or unexpected happens, it’s because anything can happen in a dream!” Good save, guys.

The amusing part comes in when sometime after I got that, I see that my cousin, who at the time lived a few blocks away from my house, had an also pirated copy of Fantasia... with a Castle of Illusion label. It was odd, although I believe we had purchased said games from the same store, so it kinda makes sense.

So apparently many years ago Roy E. Disney actually made a promise to his Uncle Walt Disney that no licensed merchandise would ever come out the 1940 Fantasia film. When Roy found about about this game’s release he actually sent complaints to Sega claiming that they broke Walt’s wishes. The game was shortly recalled after only 5,000 copies were sold, with the remaining to be destroyed. Yet finding copies of this game for a dirt cheap price is still very easy.

Logo: We see the Sega logo in its futuristic font (which is in blue and contains many white stripes around it) on a black background. On most games, the color changes in shades of blue. Variants: This logo has a lot of variations, but below are some variants for the regular logo: In its early days since until 1991, the registered trademark symbol "®" symbol was used. Starting around late 1990, the "TM" symbol replaces the registered trademark "®" symbol. Sometimes, the logo lacks the trademark symbol. On some Game Gear titles, the logo is plain blue and takes place on the blue background. Starting in 2017 to honor Sega Forever, this logo returned as a secondary logo for its placeholder, with the on-screen logo turning into the 1988 logo with the Sega jingle. There is a Sega Master System variant. The logo's individual letters slide in from from the darkness. After, the text "MASTER SYSTEM" and a copyright stamp appears. FX/SFX: Just the changing color. Sometimes, the logo fades in and/or fades out. Music/Sounds: None or the opening theme of the game. Music/Sounds Variants: On games produced by Infogrames (except for The Smurfs 2), we hear a vocoder yell "SEEEEGAAAAA!". The Sega Master System variant has a rising square wave chord when the logo's letters slide in and the 8-bit Sega jingle when the text and the copyright stamp appear. Availability: Common. Seen on most games for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. Also appears on some games for the Sega Game Gear (and the Sega 32X attachment for the Genesis/Mega Drive). Some of the only games not to use this logo were most Sega Master System games and every Electronic Arts game for Sega Genesis (including EA Sports games as well). But one EA Genesis game that contains the logo is Shaq Fu, while Baku Baku Animals, Bonkers Wax Up!, Daffy Duck in Hollywood, Double Dragon, Lemmings, Sonic Blast, Streets of Rage, Ultimate Soccer and Virtual Fighter Animation were the only Sega Master System games that contain the logo. The logo can be also seen on EA Game Gear games. It is generally left intact in most re-releases of Sega games of the time period like on Wii Virtual Console re-releases of Genesis games.

I may be alone here, but I LOVED the game. Yea, it took me quite some time to get used to the controls, but I actually liked how the heavy sorcerer clothing was applied to Mickey's movements. And again, yea, it was really hard to master the controls but once you get used to it, the game flows quite nicely. You may say that such learning curve is boring and unnecessary for your taste, and that's ok. But I enjoyed how the game urges you to take it seriously. You cannot play it recklessly. Even Castle of Illusion allows you to be reckless. I got so carried away by the easiness of COI's gameplay that Mizrabel killed me multiple times cause I didn't know how to take her seriously LOL. And honestly, even for todays standards, I think Fantasia is gorgeous.

I can find a lot of information on GEMS (Genesis Editor for Music and Sound Effects), but little of the release date on it besides a nebulous "1991". I have to assume it was made available after this game started development, and at a point where rewriting the music was a logistical impossibility. Asssuming the info presented on the game's Wikipedia page is legit, we at least know who to blame (Sega) for wanting to adapt an orchestral-centric film on the Mega Drive and the YM2612. It goes without saying that the soundchip's strengths lay elsewhere. It's kind of a pity that over the years there's been little interest of a Fantasia ROM hack to address the wonky moving platform code, sporadic enemy spawning, accidentally bugged-out music on losing all lives, clunky musical loops, and a general musical rewrite. It's understandable, mind - who'd want to go through all that effort for what's still a fairly middling 20 minute experience at the end of the day? It's just a pity the original devs didn't have enough time originally, and never really got the chance for a do-over either. Almost makes me wonder where the staff all went from here.

I am romhacking this game. I already fixed the tanky controls, but I am having an issue with bouncing on the enemies, because Mickey now bounces by default on all objects he can. I'm probably going to make it so you have to press Down if you DON'T want to bounce.

Had I a Mega Drive back in the day, I'd have pestered my parents to buy the Fantasia game... and two days later pestered them more to exchange it with some other game, probably :p I've always loved Fantasia since the theatrical re-release of 1990 and consumed the VHS release, so the idea of a game based on it had me ecstatic, and the (deservedly) nice press one could see at the time around Castle of Illusion and Quackshot, may have led to think this was another instant classic. How wrong. And honestly, it doesn't look even that great to me - the visuals feel inconsistent and have aged worse than other games of the era.

I don't understand something, perhaps someone can explain it. I played this game as a child and I remember it very well, as far as the first two levels go (inside the castle then outside) but then I remember going straight from that to the one around 13:00 where you climb up plants. I then remember only the last level being the hell one, and me and my father were stuck there. However, as much as those memories are certain, I just don't remember the rest at all as if I'd never played those. Coming from a third world country, we had what I think was a counterfeit genesis because a lot of the consoles were not originals there, and I think the game might have been too. Is it possible that those games were edited and shortened to fit on smaller cards or something?

Huh, interesting. That would be very surprising. I'm definitely not aware of any multicarts with Fantasia on them, let alone butchered out of levels. It's possible though.

One of my best friends in elementary school had this game and Castle of Illusion, and we played both. Fantasia was an example of what NOT to do compared to Castle of Illusion. We got SO frustrated with the controls and the randomness of Fantasia. There didn't seem to be a logic to it, where platforms could just randomly appear if you jumped in the right spot. So many cheap hits too. Granted, it looked pretty, but I vividly remember how frustratingly difficult and obtuse this game was.

This game is truly an enigma. Some of the design choices are straight up baffling. In the water world, there's a treasure chest that just teleports you back to the beginning of the stage lol. Amusingly odd.
