Fantastic Four (2005) - The Worst Marvel Movie?

What is it about Fantastic Four that’s made it such a cursed property as far as movies go? In this episode of Marvel Revisited, we dig into 2005’s Fantastic Four, which was 20th Century Fox’s attempt to spawn another superhero saga that could complement their X-Men movies. While a big enough financial hit to merit a sequel, in hindsight, many consider this to be the nadir of superhero movies. Hilariously, it’s one of several bad Fantastic Four movies, with Roger Corman infamously making an unreleased version in the nineties that was so bad it’s never gotten a legitimate release. Then, of course, there was Josh Trank’s “gritty” version from 2015, which torpedoed a few careers. To many, 2005’s Fantastic Four is considered the worst of the bunch, but what exactly went wrong?
Indeed, the thing people remember most about the movie is the cast, which isn’t all that bad. While Ioan Gruffudd and Jessica Alba are considered a little too bland to have played Reed Richards and Sue Storm, at the time, Chris Evans’s portrayal of Johnny Storm was widely acclaimed. It may have paved the way for him to play Captain America for the MCU years later. Michael Chiklis also earned strong reviews for playing The Thing, although many hated Julian McMahon (then riding high on the success of Nip/Tuck) as Dr. Doom. Some also criticized the choice of Barbershop’s Tim Story as director, given the perceived scale of the film. Still, considering the types of movies Fox was delivering in the era, it’s not like he would ever be allowed to make an epic anyway. I don't think that this film is as bad as many people say it is. It's a flawed, but still a fun and entertaining film. The four cast members, especially Michael Chiklis and Chris Evans, gave solid performances as The Fantastic Four and the chemistry between them was spot on. Julian McMann's Dr Doom may have a Norman Osborne clone, but atleast he was a charismatic yet threatening bad guy and unlike Tobey Kebell from Fant4stic, there was atleast build up and development for his villainy. I also loved the fact that the movie's moral was about family and turning their biggest weaknesses into their greatest strengths. In conclusion, the Tim Story Fantastic Four films weren't perfect, but atleast the makers of these films tried.

Yeah they were too harsh and despite that it was still a box office smash no drop offs after the second week unlike 2003’s Hulk and Daredevil (both good Marvel Movies but both suffered drops after the second week sadly). For many years one of the reasons it was seen as bad is cause the director also directed barbershop as if that was a reason to call this film bad this was more faithful to the comics than critics give it credit for and despite the changes in origin McMahon was still Doom from the comics they just changed the outdated origin comics Doom had does it matter if Doom is caught in the same accident as the FF as long as everything else stays intact I’m fine with it.

Thank you for covering this movie.I really enjoyed this movie when it came out and I still do. FF was always my favorite comic as a kid and I was so happy when they made this. Is it perfect? No, but I don't have to have a perfect movie to enjoy myself. The actors were great and the feel for family was there. Torch and Thing bickering and playing pranks I remember from the comics and it was fun to watch it. Evens and Chiklis were the best and McMahon was a great "bad guy" So not perfect but a very good origin story and solid acting overall does not a bad movie make. Sorry critics, you are wrong on this one. It felt like the comics to me. Not as campy as the "66 Batman but just some fun and serious threat to bring them all together. I can't wait for the MCU version as I hope to see even better movie then. Have fun just watching this one peoples.

For me, the film wasn’t that bad but I think there are 3 things that could have made the film work. 1. instead of Dr. Doom as the main villain, have mole man as the main villain. Sure keep Dr. doom in the movie but have him be built up as the main villain for a later film and have it where mole man helps doom escape to latveria. 2. More action. One of the biggest criticisms I have with this film was the lack of action. The four should have been fighting more crime and we should have seen more action, and if mole man was the main villain, they should have fought his monsters that he would bring out to take over the city. And 3. Have the story focus on Ben Grimm. The thing was truly the best part of the film and I think it be better along with the origin story, have Ben go through a character arc where he learns people should love him for who he is on the inside, not the outside. His story in this film was the best part and I think if they put the focus on that, it would have been so much better. If they done that, then they could have made 3 more sequels. And yes this movie series should have had 4 films in total as I think it would have been fitting and each on focusing on each member. With this one focusing on the thing with everything I just described, the next one being rise of the silver surfer and focusing on Johnny learning humility and protecting the world from evil is more important than fame. Also galactus should have been a giant man like in the comics not a cloud monster, the 3rd one focusing on sue where she learns their lives will never be normal and learns to embrace it along with the people that care about her as they help black panther (since he was originally pitch to be in the 3rd fantastic four film) stop a war between wakanda and namor and Atlantis cause by klaw, and the 4th one where it focuses on reed and doom’s relationship where then Dr. Doom is the main villain and is completely like his comic book counterpart. Thats how I would do it if I was in charge of the fantastic four films.

I’m going to be honest here. I don’t hate this movie at all I think it’s very entertaining and the actors do a great job embodying their comic book counterparts. Especially Michael Chiklis and Chris Evans. The only thing that doesn’t work is Doctor Doom. They really screwed him up. His costume design and his revamped origin which was just a carbon copy of Norman Osborn from the first Spider-Man. Doom’s design was much cooler in ROTSS.

This *is* the first outing of The Fantastic Four. a stated, Roger Corman’s film was never released. It was never intended to be released. It can’t be counted. I can think of several examples of Marvel films that are worse than this one. It’s not even in the bottom five. This film was made by 20th Century FOX, not 20th Century Studios. 20th Century Studios didn’t yet exist. “Marvel has always done way too much leg work...” You do realize that it was FOX that made this movie because they owned the rights and Marvel didn’t yet even have its own studio, right? Marvel didn’t make a movie at all until 2008. No, we have *no* expectations of Kevin Feige and the MCU. Not anymore. I’m not lore expert but I think Latveria is Doom’s country, not town.

Well, just having Jessica Alba in the film made every man on Earth want to watch it when she was one of the most talked about "hot chicks" at the time lol. The first film may not fit the current MCU but neither did the first couple Hulks unless we do the MultiVerse scenario. Here's my live-action FF pitch: Release it as a limited series, and set it in the Cold War era '60s (when the original comics debuted). Season 1 is a rotating collection of their early villains (Mole Man, Namor, etc.). The season builds to a Doctor Doom story for the finale. Season 2 continues with Doom and others, and leads up to Silver Surfer/Galactus.

I would LOVE to see a Silver Surfer stand alone film, he deserves his own film, it could be a great metaphor for ignorance & prejudice & also a great...SUPERMAN style love story, if written and directed right. I believe the story lacked a significant impact. It required Dr. Doom to possess a greater sense of danger with a more intricate and grander plan. It should have devoted more time to developing a compelling villain. Personally, I found this iteration of Dr. Doom to be uninteresting, as well as the overall storyline. While it had its enjoyable moments, it needed to delve into darker territories and include a few more minutes of intense combat, instances of character development, and meaningful consequences. By striking a better balance between humor and realism, the movie would have felt more authentic.

Black Panther was pretty horrible. There was so much obvious green screen and poor cgi. I know earlier movies have that same issue but, that movie is only 4 years old. Terminator 2 was released in 1991 and that movie still holds up. I would put Blade: Trinity, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man 1 and 2, The Avengers all up there. These movies are throw away!

This movie is exactly what it needed to be in terms of overall tone and character. If it had been less 'comic book' it would have been too close to X-2 (and for me that is a pretty high bar). If it had been darker (like the last film) it would have been too close to Batman Begins (released the previous month) and may not have compared well to it. the FANTASTIC 4 film felt..thin and basic when i saw it at the Cinema (especially when compared to the comic) BUT it had a good comedic energy vibe about it, in a similar way to something like- GHOSTBUSTERS, the comedy aspect worked best which I felt was the film's best strength. I heard rumours that there was going to be a more loyal to the comics version, made when Marvel got the rights back. set in the 60s, during the space race, & when they discover their powers all at once, having crash landed back on Earth (which is what they could have done, originally instead of setting it in today's cynical World, to do a 60s F F might have given it an originality, with less of a sense of it having to compete with other super hero films.

Let me just say that I saw this movie as a kid, and loved it. As an adult I haven't revisited this movie as I've adapted a One Movie One View policy growing up. But I enjoyed this video. Brings back memories.

Dr Doom was nothing like he is in the comics. He was more of a Dr Dumb version of the character. I hated this version of Doom.

Before I watch, Fantastic Four was an adequate origin movie. It was perfectly cast but could have used another draft before shooting. Love it, though, still happy to watch it.

It’s definitely not the worst marvel movie but there were some things that were lacking in some places. The cast and visuals made it watchable but the pacing and main story were just all over the place with no clear motive. Really hope the MCU version scores a slam dunk in Feb 2025

It was decent enough for it's time and cinematic climate, but after the MCU, it would've had no chance. But how were those X-Men casts a year diff between this movie was on the heels of x2?

Marvel does a Fantastic Four film, it does very well. They do a second film. Then, for the third film the main Marvelverse FF are exploring the Multiverse and encounter the Fantastic Four's from the Roger Corman film and the other two films (including Chris Evans as an older Human Torch).
