Cool story on the glass tiles above the coffee-shop front windows: These are used mainly on old store fronts and date back to before electric lights. They have sawtooth ridges on one side to refract light to the back of stores. Many stores had gas lights (before electricity service) but they were a huge fire danger. Called "luxfer" tiles, they were introduced in the late 1800's and were popular until electric lighting became available. Originally a colorless glass, they have since turned a shade of purple due to their manganese having been exposed to sunlight. Though rare, you can find individual for sale (eBay is a popular source). I've acquired about 50 of these tiles and have been incorporating them into stained glass windows that I make.

Adam, your reactions to things like non-working telephone booths just fills me with delight! Your love of these relics to a better way of life, so much simpler, quieter and more vivid amazes me! Have you been this way your entire life? I’d love to sit down with your mom and dad to ask them! And you interact with folks who start up conversations that inevitably turn into “guided tours” - it comes so naturally to you, my friend! Anvil rock is there because that’s where it was born, silly! Maybe it regenerates the graffiti away - it could happen. 😁 Whoever painted that train/horse mural is VERY talented and yes, it IS a 3D effect! Fabulous job! Thanks to Carolina Tony for his help and humor! LOVE the last Nicholson impression!!!

Today's the 16th, and my Mama's birthday. She was in the WAVEs at the end of WWII, stationed at St Albans Navy Hospital in Queens, NYC, and when she got out, she was very homesick for Nashville. There was stuff going on at home, and she didn't think it was the time to go home. So she did what the man in the "Mayberry, My Home Town" episode of the Andy Griffith Show did: she moved to a hometown she'd never seen before. A friend in the WAVEs had been from Columbia SC, and she made it sound just like Nashville. So my mom packed up her earthly belongings, and moved to Columbia. I wish I knew how to look up her life there, but all I know is that she rented a room with a kitchenette, and got a job. She bought a cocker spaniel to keep her company, but the dog wouldn't eat anything but bologna. Her landlady was mean, and wanted her to do nothing there but pay rent; the puppy was probably a problem. She didn't stay in Columbia very long, but she visited Charleston and Savannah while she was nearby. Before long, she had given the cocker spaniel away, and was on a train for the _real_ Nashville.. I'm kind of fascinated by my mom doing that, after her adventure as a Navy Hospital corpsman. She was a little broken-hearted about a lot of things, but had grown so much, carrying out the serious responsibility of that job, right after she got out of highschool, too..She just picked herself up, and tried to be upbeat, and did something decisive. I wish I knew where she lived!

My mother's family was from the deep south. We heard about General William Tecumseh Sherman's march but we never went to see where their plantation had been if they even knew, so this video was a trip. You kind of glossed over the parts about the first U.S. Navy officer to resign from the Navy when Lincoln was elected and so did NOT serve under Lincoln, and also how the grave with the obelisk was for a signer to the Declaration of Secession from the Union by South Carolina, an act of treason against the U.S. government. That red cross just inside the church gave me a start too. I half expected we were going to be shown into a back room where there was a closet full of old white robes.

We are going to move from the city and make our home in a small town. My husband is from the east coast (Pennsylvania) and I'm from California (we met when he was in the Air Force) and we've been living in big cities since we got married. Thanks to your videos, we've been looking at small towns/villages to relocate to. I visited South Carolina a few years back and was entranced by the state. So your delightful videos help in seeing some of these towns that I didn't get a chance to see while visiting my friend who lived near the Charleston. My husband has a large family who mostly live on the east coast, he has a cousin who lives in Florida and a brother who lives in West Virginia. He'll be happy to be in a part of the country where we can visit family members more easily. I'm looking forward to living in an area that has less heat (we live in Phoenix). While there is more humidity, there is more green (I love the oaks around SC) and less desert. 🙂

That is the kind of town that I would love to live in. Where the locals are so friendly. Bob was a nice gentleman to drive you both over to that church. Pretty church. It’s been a while since I have heard that term 50 cent tour. I have relatives that use to say that. ~~ I love that horse mural on the side of that building. It looked like it was 3D. ~~ Now I am seeing I need to explore South Carolina. I haven’t seen too much of it but I am definitely liking the state. I do have a little tie to South Carolina cause that is where my grandparents met. They met in Charleston, SC.~~Loving your videos Adam. Look forward to seeing the next adventure every morning.

Adam - really enjoying your new adventures. I hope you can find your way to the Upstate. Stay safe and warm; it's cold, snowy, and icy here in Gville.

As charming as these towns are it highlights the desolation left behind by the industrial migration to everywhere else…

Adam I'm sure you know this already. I believe your subscribers would love seeing the town of Walterboro, SC where many scenes from the movie Radio were shot. We found the school and the practice football field.. I'm sure the barbershop scenes were done there a well. We also found Radio's church. Many old homes there and historic structures. Great videos of late my wife and I are loving them. You're excitement over the phone booth had us both giggling. God Bless be safe.

That gentleman that drove you both around in Ridgeway, kind of reminded me of your dad.

Amazing how much there is to see in these small towns. A mid-80s first generation ATM! A 'Chessie' railcar - that's a long way from Baltimore.
