Fantasy Worldbuilding - Lakes and Monsters

In this video, I’ll talk about worldbuilding and fantasy maps, while I experiment with drawing different types of lakes using watercolours.
I’ve also got my old geology book where I show during which type of circumstances lakes are formed, which is good to know if you want to create a realistic fantasy map. (But there is nothing that will stop you from breaking the rules.)
Since summer is here, and the weather has been lovely during the last couple of weeks here in England, I took the opportunity to leave my desk and visit a little lake in a nature reserve here in Oxford.
I made a list of monster encounters that you can use if you’re planning on writing a D&D adventure, or other RPG adventures for 5e systems. I also discussed how you can make your adventure much more dangerous, if you use lakes as an environmental hazard. Finally, I talked a little bit about The Winter Eel, also known as “Storsjöodjuret” from the book Rise of the Ice Dragons Trilogy, that some of you might recognize.

This is very inspiring! I've been thinking of getting into drawing fantasy maps lately so I was happy to find your video! Now I want to go and grab a piece of paper and start doodling rivers, lakes and mountains. Great video! :)

Go for it! I started drawing maps after I got inspired by other cartographers. I used to draw simple maps during our D&D adventures, to keep track of where we were, but with time it turned into a type of chronicles: The names of towns and inns along the road became landmarks over where we had had wonderful - or dangerous! - encounters. The first maps I made were very simple, and it wasn’t until last year I started experimenting with watercolours. It’s so much fun and I highly recommend it! Aaaw, thank you! You're most welcome! I’m still new to making videos like this so it’s nice to get feedback. I tried to vary the music a little bit for this video and used two different tracks, but I wasn’t sure that it was going to work, so I’m glad that you liked it. 😺 This is a side-project (and my new hobby) where I’m sharing things that I’ve learned from writing books and fantasy adventures, but also where I share my attempts to become better at drawing maps.
