Secondly, and more importantly, I have also been told to avoid these, but I do think they have value in helping you understand what it feels like to be standing in the correct position. Instead of relying on them to keep you in place, just try and actively pull your shoulders back while wearing one so that it doesn't feel like it is doing anything. Also I never bought a commercial one, I used a judo belt. I guess you could probably use a regular belt as long as it doesn't have a big buckle.

@vivienkoles18804 ай бұрын

@YaaLFH4 ай бұрын
@@vivienkoles1880 That's a very common misconception. Bra straps are not meant to carry the weight of breasts. The main purpose of straps is to help shape and lift the breasts while holding them in one place. In a well designed and well fitted modern bra, most of the weight is supported by the bra band - that's why it should fit snugly and why "sports bras" that you can pull over your head are useless. Unfortunately most women wear bras with much too wide band and much too small cups, which prevents the bra band from doing its job, digging grooves in arms, causing bad posture and damaging the bra. FYI: I currently wear size 32J (yes, bra alphabet doesn't end at "DDD" and you shouldn't increase band size just because there are no larger cups) and have a strapless bra that supports, shapes and lifts my breasts just fine without the help of straps.

A couple of quick tips from a professional leather worker. Consider using an edge beveling knife to cut those 90 degree corners off the straps and burnish with some tokenole and a wood slicker. Corder Leather has a great video on edge finishing that I highly recommend. This is going to keep any sharp edges from dining into sensitive areas like the arm pit. Using resoline is great, but consider using some more tokenole and a glass burnisher on the back. This will seal the suede side. Tokenole is made from plant resin and wax. When you rub it briskly with a hardwood slicker or a glass burnisher, it generates heat, allowing the wax to melt into the leather and seal it. When done properly, you can actually get the suede side almost as smooth as the skin side. This is also going to strengthen the leather as it compacts the fibers and keeps them flexable, without weighing them down with acrylic (which resoline is made from). Hope this helps. 💚

It sure helped me! I now have a few items on my shopping list and some ideas for some scraps I got in a scrap bag!
@questionmark5764 ай бұрын
For the cheap folks out there, a wood dowel works fine to burnish the edge and the back. Water and wear will do the same job the legit products do, It just takes more time. I like beeswax and coconut oil with a bit of olive oil and a few drops of teatree oil mixed in to soften it and keep off mold. Hair conditioner works in a pinch. As far as fit goes, I could be wrong, but it's screaming at me that the top piece needs to be a little longer, the bottom a little shorter, and then the joint could be angled and stitched instead of riveted for a much flatter passage under the arm. Personally, I would have chosen a thin vegetable tanned leather for some structure. After a bit of wear it will stretch to the perfect contour.
@Starvoice7624 ай бұрын
@questionmark576 I generally advise against coconut and olive oil in leatherwork. Water works well as a burnishing agent because it basically just acts as lubrication in burnishing with a dowel, which draws the natural oils in the leather to the surface. However, it doesn't work on Chrome Tanned (the more fabricy couch and bag leather), since the fibers don't compress in the same way that they do in Vegetable tan leather (The kind Bernadette was using.) Plant based oils like olive and coconut go rancid after a while and can cause bacteria and mold to grow in your leather. You'll most often see saddle makers use those because they're inexpensive (in comparison to other oils like Neatsfoot, made from the horns and hooves of the cow which doesnt spoil at the same rate), and the oils in saddlery get washed out and replaced with fresh oil frequently enough that it doesn't have time to go rancid. When you burnish with toenole, that you are burnishing with is the wax, not the oils in the leather. As it stands, adding different oils to leather is there to keep it pliable, not really to seal it. It's a complicated thing to explain. :)
@questionmark5764 ай бұрын

In case anyone actually thinks it's a good idea to live in one of these things: it's not. You absolutely should not wear posture correctors often. They support your body in a way that gives you good posture, but by supporting you in this way they discourage the use of your muscles to achieve the same posture, and thus weakening your muscles, resulting in even worse posture once you take the thing off. Basically, please only wear them if your specialist recommends them, because they will do more harm than good.

Yeah, I've also been told that "nudging" towards proper posture is fine, but that it shouldn't actually provide any real support since our bodies really hate wasting energy, so lesser-used muscles will degrade. I haven't seen one that looks as unobtrusive but supportive as yours, you made a better wheel

It's a sign. I've been thinking about making one of these for years, in the 8 style. A professional stitcher once told me that something to pull the shoulders back and a 3# weight located at the small of the back would help.

Thank you SO MUCH for posting this. I've considered buying a version of this from Amazon but have been hesitant to spend money on a dropshipped, bulky brace of questionable durability. I hadn't even considered my options for a homemade version but, as someone who likes to DIY when I can, this opens up so many possibilities. I also greatly prefer your design to a lot of the ones you can purchase--it's brilliantly simple, effective, and easy to layer under clothes. Seriously, thank you!!!

Save your money and strengthen your muscles instead. Exercise is free.
@sofiar6114 ай бұрын
@@YaaLFH I strength train 6 days a week and typically work on my upper back/shoulders on 2 of those days. I enjoy it and it helps keep me strong. Nevertheless, I struggle with remembering not to hunch over while doing desk work, sewing, etc, which leaves me in discomfort afterwards. The best part: making a harness like this wouldn’t cost me anything because I already have suitable materials! Thank you very much for your kind concern, though-I appreciate it.
@YaaLFH4 ай бұрын
@@sofiar611 A contraption like this will ruin your hard earned muscles if you wear it for extended periods of time, and make the problem worse. Find a different way of reminding yourself to not hunch over - set an alarm to regularly straighten and stretch your back. After some time you will be doing it without needing a reminder. If you really need something that will remind you not to hunch over, sew a simple non-stretchy fabric belt like this and add a small hard ball (golf ball or walnut sized) where the belt crosses in the back. The belt should fit somewhat snugly but not pull on your shoulders, just stay in place. When you hunch over, the ball will poke you in the back reminding you to straighten up.

Important information: This only helps your posture while you are wearing it. It can actually harm your posture in the long run, because your muscles no longer have to do the work and therefore may become weaker and can no longer keep your body straight without the support of the harness. It can be useful in the moment, while you are sitting in front of your computer or sewing machine, but please make sure you don't wear it all day and remember to do exercises to strengthen those muscles.

I'm done that figure-of-eight with wide elastic for years to help with my posture when sewing.... but warning, it does sometimes lead to pinched nerves under my arms! If someone is trying this out, I do think that elastic might be a good place to start so that you don't injure yourself.

it’s such a powerful feeling that whilst doing or creating something today, we suddenly have that lightbulb moment and connect it to what those before us already figured out. that “So that’s why this is like this!” moment is inspiring in a way that’s hard to describe. It’s like in that moment, we feel connected to the past and feel the skill and wisdom and fruits of their labours (and often, the struggles too 😅)

The shoulder harness is really cool, but as someone who has been typing, then typing and mousing, and now mostly mousing for a living for the last nearly 30 years, you should look into an ergonomic setup for using your laptop: comfortable chair that encourages sitting up straight, screen at eye-height, and keyboard/mouse/touchpad at a height that fits under your hands when your arms are bent at a 90 degree angle.
@th4tw3irdg1rl4 ай бұрын
I have all that, I spent almost a thousand dollars on an ergonomic chair, bought a laptop riser and monitor arms so everything is at eye height, etc, etc. I still find ways to sit like an absolute goblin. A harness like this is helpful to have a tactile reminder to sit with good posture, so long as it doesnt become a crutch/reduce your shoulder muscles.

You do realize that using a passive support to pin the shoulders back is a bad idea right? The appropriate muscles need to fire or they will atrophy. This will most likely have the opposite effect you are looking for. If anything, I would suggest elastic band harness that pulls the shoulders down and forward that you have to fight against to maintain good position. Best of luck though

While you made something that already exists i feel like you improved on the design so much by making it so simple. Not only does it cost (almost) nothing in material and labour, it doesnt add any bulk and can be worn under anything (even in warm weather) while the fabric one looks quite warm. it also looks kinda good, it could be worn on top of something almost like a accesory.

I'm pretty sure Dr Mike made a comment on this type of harness for your back. It actually does more harm than good, and degrades your back muscles, cuz the support is doing the work for them, they no longer need to be as strong, inadvertently making you incredibly reliant on the support. But then again it might be beneficial for you with your Scoliosis. Probs a good idea to talk to your doctor about it if they can provide some insight.

Thanks for sharing all the design for this! I copied your idea and started with 3/4 inch leather. I used 3-4 oz leather which still digs but isn't too bad. It's wild how much I lean forward and never noticed.
