I have a multi-watt rectifier and it sounds good at low volumes. It does like to get cranked but even the 100 watt modes can sound good at low volumes. The only thing is the highs of the "modern" mode get very intense at low volumes, so stick with the "vintage" mode. Though I agree that the best solution is an attenuator, you can still get good sounds at low volumes.

From my understanding 16ohm speakers are always brighter than 8ohm versions. Refer to Hop pole Celestion video for that. DV77s are closer to M65 creamback but slightly brighter, not close to V30. Dr. Danny Mann here on KZbin did made a video on how even tape you stick on the grill cloth affect the tone of a cab.

Chris Khole did a video with one of the engineers at Jensen. Was a great/nerdy video. (4:45) 16Ohm speakers will be brighter. Putting two 8Ohm speakers in series will not brighten the tone. But you have just given me a great idea for a video... I have a 4x12 that can be run 4ohm or 16ohm mono. It can also be run in stereo 8ohms per side. I'll make a recording of all the options and post it soon

Its a combination of both; the speaker loud matters, (16 ohm brighter) and the total load matters because it interacts with the windings/taps of the output transformer differently.

Speakers are quite complicated. A key detail to consider: frequency affects inductance (impedance is a bit of a moot point with a reactive load like a speaker). What this means real world is that the higher the rated impedance, the lower the average power. The lower the rated the impedance, the higher the average power. This should give you more bass and less of a difference between frequencies with an 8 ohm speaker. Also a 16 ohm speaker should give you more dynamics between different frequencies and will have a tendency to sound brighter and have less bass. To understand what's going on you need to see the frequency response curve for the speaker in the cabinet it's installed in and you would also need to see the inductance curve as it relates to frequency and then you can get a feel for what sorts of differences you would see between speakers.
@Joey_Tatts_Palmer2 жыл бұрын

Thanks for answering my question. I definitely agree that an amp with a good master volume is best for home use. I have an archon 100 that sounds pretty good at low volume. Was hoping that the dual rec would sound good at low volume too. Any amps with a tone like the dual rec that have a good master volume and sound good at low volume?
@DeathPandaDanceParty3 жыл бұрын
You could get a Two Notes Torpedo X as a load box and attenuator. That way you can keep the volume low but the turn the Mesa up and get the tone of it turned up but at a lower volume. Could try an EQ pedal with your Archon to make it sound closer to a dual Rectifier. Diesel Herbert have really good master volumes. Diezel demos it on their KZbin and specifically mention that. Using its channel 2 in plus mode or even Channel 3 and the mid cut function might be able to get it close to a dual rec. if you like it with more mids then can always dial them up and turn the mid cut off.
@LoreAccurateHusky3 жыл бұрын
Having the master volume over the channel volumes makes it easy to run it at lower volumes, I run the channels at 10 o'clock and ride the master volume. The 50 watt mode also gives you more wiggleroom in terms of the master sweep. The multiwatts have very good sweeps for their pots. It's definitely one of my better amps for low volumes which surprised me.

Definitely the equivalent resistance the amp sees (the overall load of the speakers altogether in the cab) will be what determines the tone and not the resistance of the individual speakers. That total equivalent resistance the amp sees from the cab definitely forms the filter which affects the tone. But it is a little bit more complex than that since the speaker’s impedance is not purely resistive (it has inductance). Also, the impedance varies with frequency. But definitely the total equivalent impedance the amps sees will affect the tone. I say this as an electrical engineer myself, so that is my educated guess about it.
