Yes, the Oklahoma land race really did happen this way. And yes, some people cheated by staking out their land before the start. Those people were referred to as "sooners" because they went sooner than they were supposed to. That is why Oklahoma is known as "The Sooner State".

Here's some behind-the-scenes trivia. For the scene where Tom Cruise was naked with the pot covering his privates, he was supposed to have a cloth covering him under the pot. The director, Ron Howard, told him he should do take where he's actually naked under the pot but not tell Nicole Kidman (they were already a couple at this time). Tom Cruise liked the idea and that's the take you see in the film. When she peeked under the pot, she didn't know he would really be naked under the pot. Her smile and double-take are very genuine. Loved this movie when it came out. Saw it a couple of times at the theater. The soundtrack by John Williams is one of my favorites.

I was 20 years old, when this came out, starting a training course in a different city, for a new career, and I was bored in my hotel room one evening, so i decided to walk down to a local theatre I had passed earlier. I picked a random show, simply because I recognized Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman on the poster. I was the only one in the theatre, and the film was being shown in 70mm..... and I was blown completely away by the landscape visuals as much as I was about the film itself. Still one of my favorites to this day, and a great little private memory. Enya's "Book Of Days" is still one of my favorite tunes because of this movie...

I didn't realized this was shown on 70mm in theaters. That must have been something. A number of years back they did a rerelease of Lawrence of Arabia in theaters in its original 70mm format. I had seen the film at home in the past and always thought it was a good movie, but perhaps a little overhyped. But watching it in the theaters, on 70mm, completely changed my whole perspective on it. Everything clicked into place watching it at that scale and it became immediately obvious why so many people name it one of the greatest films of all time. I always liked this movie as a fun film. But wish I could have seen it on 70 mm. That land race scene must have been something.

So eventually there was this one small guy who started kicking the crap out of everyone because he actually did dodge. He got pretty famous and made a bunch of money fighting guys way bigger than himself and winning, until he fought this one big guy who got frustrated because he couldnt hit him... so he grabbed a hold of him with one arm and beat the shit out of him with the other... ending his whole career.

The Oklahoma Land Rush happened just that way. April 22 1889...Oklahoma had been where they sent all the Native Tribes. They called it, "Indian Nations" Oklahoma means Land of The Red Man. Then The Greedy bastards in Washington DC (The more things change the more they stay the same.) figured out a way to make money from the Rail Roads by opening up Oklahoma to White settlers. The Oklahoma Land Rush came into being. all the dirt poor farmers and dreamers carved up and plowed under the tall grass prairie. 40 years later all the topsoil blew away in what came to be known as the Dust Bowl. Google that and find out what happened to the Sod Busters then. Most of Oklahoma is Cattle ranch Prairie and Oil now. But the Event of the Oklahoma Land Rush is an historical Fact.

The 1931 Best Picture winner, a film called "Cimarron", was famous for its epic depiction of the Oklahoma Land Rush. According to imdb the scene used 5,000 extras. "Cimarron" was remade in 1960 and again featured an elaborate Land Rush scene. I've seen neither, but apparently it isn't really a Western story, despite the evocative name. Based on a novel by Edna Ferber, whose books were often adapted into movies back in the day.

The land grab didn't stop with the land rush of 1889, which was mostly in the panhandle. The Osage Indian reservation in the eastern part of the state kept the "sooners" out - until oil was discovered, that is ! In the 19-teens and early 1920s, Osage Indians began to die "mysterious" deaths - bushwhacked and gun shot, blown up with dynamite, auto accidents, etc. It was a regular "epidemic" (sarc) of Native American deaths, until the FBI stepped in and found out that white men who had married Indians with land on the rez were behind the killings. It was the FBI's first major case. You can read about it in the book Killers of the Flower Moon, by David Grann. There is also a movie just completed with the same title starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Robert DeNiro.

Yes Tom was supposed to be Irish, but his accent in this film is widely regarded as one of the worst fake Irish accents in cinema history. Irish people tend to hold fake Irish accents up to a high standard, and we keep score. The good fake Irish accents tend to be few and far between. In my own personal opinion, the best fake Irish accent I have heard was from Samantha Morton in the 2002 Irish made film 'In America'. I thought she was an Irish actress I hadn't heard of, until she was nominated for an Oscar for that role and I heard she is English. One of Tom's brothers at the start of this film though, is Jared Harris, the son of Irish actor Richard Harris. Cassie saw him before as Dr. Legasov in the 'Chernobyl' mini-series.

I saw this when it first came out and never realized till now the shot of the native americans just watching them race to take over the land. Subtle but effective.

Very nice reaction. It was a while ago since I watched this. Giving a shoutout to the writer Bob Doleman whom I've worked with and spoke a little about his work on this. Good job Bob! Hopefully he sees this reaction video. Looking forward to your next one!

This movie holds a special place in my heart. My great-great-great grand ancestor, Patrick Conway, immigrated from Ireland in 1863. After the Civil War, he settled in Chicago.

people trash tom's accent but i never minded. it's not perfect but it doesn't distract from the movie imo. (unlike kevin costner's accent in Robin Hood.. which was still an awesome movie though)

Thank you for watching this. When I was in like 7th grade I had a history teacher whose class I really enjoyed so I signed up for a summer class he was teaching & we watched this movie in it. When I was older I would occasionally remember bits & pieces of this movie & wanted to figure out what it was, but couldn't remember any of the actors/actresses in it & only some of the plot. Having watched your channel for a while now & you choosing this movie I finally know the name of that movie I saw like 2 decades ago so thank you :).

What amazes me is there's actually still women like y'all out there who appreciate a genuine, speak from the heart, gentleman. It was lookin to me like most women want a "bad boy" that beats around the bush, keeps his options open, won't commit to any one girl and always keeps a girl guessin and wonderin how he feels about em. Most datin coaches, even female datin coaches want us to believe that we should be that kind of man because that's the kind that's attractive to most women. Well pardon me ladies but I say BUFFALO BAGELS! I'd heap rather be honest, up front, steadfast and a gentleman the way I was raised than to be a "Steven" that a girl doesn't know if she can depend on or not. Appreciate you ladies and hope ya have a goodun ✝️🇺🇸🤠

I met my wife in an oldie theater they show films ranging 20s-now, thruought the entire film we glanced at one another here n there, i began to get primal during the fight scenes id growl, id hear her giggle wasnt until the run at the end i began to tear up when Tommy rode that horse beating em all running like the wind, the end of the film came and the lass in tears same as I asks "Would you stake my land?" Gentlemen of culture i ask you. For the love of your life i ask wouldn't you?

I enjoy the scene where the bar patrons attempt to guess where Joseph is from. (Down from the North? Perhaps the East? West of here? South?) Clearly they haven't a clue from Cruise's accent.

If you want to see a great "early America" saga/epic, you should see "Gangs of New York". It's a Martin Scorsese film with Leonardo Di Caprio, Cameron Diaz, Daniel Day Lewis, Liam Neeson, Brendan Gleeson and lots of others. It's an amazing film about the turf wars within NYC in 1862 (the film is based on a book of the same name, written in 1927). It is an unbelievable film, nominated for 10 Academy Awards and Golden Globes and Critics Choice awards, among many others. Also, if you like Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman, you should see them in the film that brought them together for the first time, "Days of Thunder"! It's a sports movie and it's really quite good and exciting. Check these out!
