mmmm, kind of. People with aspd see those close to them as extensions of themselves, and rank them by what these "other arms" can do for them or bring to them. I'm married to someone with it and he will cry if something happens to me but only really because he sees me as a part of himself. So sure, Joseph may be crying because something of his was taken, but it's not totally selfish. Their brains are just fundamentally different from our own. I think Joseph is incredibly sympathetic, personally.

On the drive to the final boss you can hear on the radio that Korea launched missile and that the states were under lockdown. Not only that, on the drive to the bunker you can see and hear multiple bombs falling. Also, in a sense, the whole game is a metaphorical retelling of Revelation. There's a Reddit post explaining everything. Games don't have to forcefeed you a story, the subtle route that takes thinking is better.

It's amazing how so many people can be upset about an ending just because it doesn't meet the ideals of what a "good ending" is. Being able to sympathize with the enemy despite his anarchy is what makes a well written villain. "Gray line" characters like Joseph are no different than Magneto, Joker, Andrew Ryan, Pagan Min, among many others. If you think critically despite their tyranny, *you KNOW that in the end, they were probably right.*
