The Mike Yanagita scene is actually quite simple - and very integral to the film. Mike’s a really good liar. He tells a story about marrying a woman they both know, but died of cancer. Then Marge is told that none of that happened. The realisation makes her remember how bad of a liar Jerry was when she met him first time round. He actually came across as suspicious, and she let him off. This inspires her to interview him again, then he flees the interview, and the case gets blown wide open. It may seem off, but it's the catalyst that really sets it all in motion. In the TV series, there's a "Mike Yanagita" scene in every season.

After first watching it, I questioned the reason for that scene and then it made sense to me later on. That's brilliant story telling to advance the plot.

The scene further illustrates Marge's underlying toughness of character as someone who, while being superficially bland "Minnesota nice" with a sometimes doofus-y accent, is no chump and will (politely) set boundaries, as in "No, why don't you sit over there --I prefer that."

It wasn't based on a true story the directors put that in there to give the movie more weight. Some people were angry when they found out.

I don't see why people would be angry though, I mean this stuff happens all the time, maybe not exactly like this, but everything in this film happens probably ever single day in this country. But I guess at the time, when true crime wasn't a huge hit on every single channel like today, they probably invested a lot of stock in this tale and got too emotionally invested in the victims. Nowadays a girl goes missing and it's just nothing like it was in 1990 when a girl went missing and the entire country looked for her. And let's be real here, nearly every movie that uses "inspired by/based on true events", is full of BS. I don't think any "true story" was ever even 75% true.

Fargo and No Country have similar themes, but where Sheriff Ed Tom Bell feels both baffled and “overmatched”, Sheriff Marge Gunderson is only baffled by the criminal’s motivation. Sheriff Marge finds refuge in her loving relationship with her husband (and by extension, we find relief in their homey domestic scenes) but Sheriff Ed finds no relief (although his marriage seems loving). It could be a difference in personality or it could be a difference in their gender roles. Are men more prone to existential crisis? I don’t know, I have no basis for comparison. (I want to note that Marge and Norm don’t conform to all the stereotypical roles. Norm says with conviction, “You gotta have breakfast”. I could go on about their marriage. They’re so damn cute.)

Quite possibly the most perfect movie ever made. It's got it all. Drama, comedy, sex, violence, emotional relatability... I dunno. Greed is the thing that unravels the thing that makes us all human. On top of that, the film was set in an environment that most Americans don't know about. Which only amplifies the entertaining message behind it all. I could go on and on about why FARGO is sublime, but I think y'all will get it once you think about it for more than a minute..

There were cell phones in 1996. They were pretty basic, and there wasn't always coverage, but coverage was expanding. In the movie Pretty Woman (1990), Richard Gere's character uses a huge, clunky cell phone, and in City Slickers (1991) one of the characters keeps phoning home from the wilderness to find out about the baseball scores, but his friend in New York keeps fading away because the signal can't always reach him in the rough terrain. Good times. No one imagined there could ever be such a thing as a smartphone. Another good movie from 1996 was The Birdcage.

However, I believe the movie is set in 1987 and during that time cell phones were pretty much relegated to what were then known primarily as "car phones" and taking one out of the car involved carrying a separate lunchbox sized battery

The TV series is excellent. Each season is a different storyline but all are excellent. I was suspicious that the TV series could be as could as the movie but it is quite well made. Highly recommend. BTW, Marge (played by the wife of one of the Coen Brothers, Frances McDormand) is the moral compass of the story. Her demeanor and reaction to the murders represents the audience as well as the goodness vs. evil in the world.

I just found your channel and you two are truly stellar! I felt like I was relaxing and watching a great movie with two close friends. And the dynamic between you two is so damn wonderful! 😃❤️ And yes, this film is such a masterpiece. There’s a reason why, in 2006, “Fargo” was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant"-one of only seven films designated in its first year of eligibility.

Wade (the grandfather) may have hesitated to shoot Carl a second time for fear that if Carl died, his daughter might never be found or be executed by the remaining kidnapper (which happened anyway.) Or, having already taken a bullet, Wade may have been going into shock and simply no longer thinking cogently enough to take second shot at Carl--which we all wish he had!

This is my favorite movie ever, it's hard to describe why but it just draws you in, even to the little conversations about the weather. If you want to see what happens to the money, check out the FX series it does not disappoint!

It was the warmest winter in Minnesota for a very long time. They should have just had the guys wear the parkas to match the weather.

I'm originally from Mississippi, I've lived in Minneapolis for over 30 years....the winters are brutal. Typically, it's pretty chilly this time of year; however, this year has been great. Also, this is not a true story.

there was one unfortunate japanese lady who , after watching the movie, actually traveled to Fargo to find the money...she was later found dead in the woods...and that's the truth about this movie...someone actually died... in a way, the filmmakers really killed someone

I had to laugh when you were arguing about whether it really was a true story. It was very prescient of you because as I am sure you now know, it was total fiction and they did lie when they said it was based on a true story. Glad you liked it too. I have been a subscriber since you started your channel but I haven't watched one of your reactions in a very long time because reactions to action movies *the movies you seem to have gravitated to) are quite frankly boring. The highly rated thought-provoking movies are however, the kind that will get you more subscribers. And when you started this channel you did a lot of them, movies like THE SHAWSHANK REDMPTION and THE GREEN MILE and SCHINDLER'S LIST. So hopefully this movie was not a fluke. And if it is the start of a new trend, here is another that would be a good complement to this one PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN

I'm thinking that when Marge slips in the snow in the first murder scene, that was a genuine unscripted slip. When she looks back she's actually asking if they want to do a retake. That's how it looks to me, anyhow. Incidentally, although the movie's called Fargo the action actually takes place in Brainerd. They just thought Brainerd was a dumb movie title so they named it after the next town down the road instead.

He doesn't really care about the lot. He just needs the money to pay off his loans he stole on the dealership cars (which don't exist). I'm sure he would have taken the money to buy the lot, then pay off his loans. The lot deal would have never gone through and he hoped his father-in-law would never figure out he didn't own it. Of course that wouldn't have worked, because he is an idiot.

Jerry is profoundly stupid, but he must have been planning to disappear with the cash and start a new life. The mess he'd made with the financing company was going to be known to all within days and the ransom money couldn't prevent that. He thought Wade -- with Stan's blessing -- would give him $750K and trust that it would be invested in the forty acres in Wayzata, but he couldn't have been planning to do that and remain trapped in Minneapolis. He gives no indication of having any fondness for his wife or son or for anyone at all.
