The Mike Yanagita scene seems weird until you realize it leads Marge to her most important revelation: she's too trusting. She goes back to question Jerry after finding out Mike was lying to her.

Common theory but I strongly disagree. Going back for follow-ups is routine in investigations. She wasn't expecting anytning when she went back, which is why she was completely surprised when he fled the interview.

I never thought about it that way, but it makes more sense now. I previously thought it was just a weird side-story that the Coen Bros put in there for background.

You’re all off. The side story is in order to make Marge reconsider her life and appreciate it more. After she understands the main story, about those people making all this mess for "a little bit of money", and with that whole Mike situation where his life sucks, she goes and say "there’s more to life than a little money". At the end, in bed with her husband, she’s thinking about her life (also thinking about Mike and the investigation) and say "heck we’re doing pretty good" to her husband. Then excited about the birth of their kid. The whole time we see their wholesome relationship, the simple things make them happy. Greed is one of the main themes of the Coen’s filmography. The Mike story is there to realize one’s own life, and how there’s a lot to like and to be satisfied with. Greed always leads Coen’s characters into bad trouble. Marge isn’t like that.

Yes, she has a moment of realisation when on the phone with the friend who says the pretend wife wasn't dead. It whole meeting was a bit of a clunky inclusion IMHO. I think she was just determined to be more assertive and of course didn't expect Jerry to do a runner. She had no real reason to believe he was connected to murders, (Police didn't know the wife was kidnapped or the FIL was dead), she just wanted an answer about the car.

You cut out the last scene! It was so perfect. Damn. The significance of the story is how strong this woman is. She's got a strong tater tot hot dish caserole accent. She's 8 months pregnant. She solves a horrific multi homicide crime and bags the bad guy, all while keeping a level head in the arctic tundra weather. So they're in bed and she doesn't even burden her husband with her day because he's disappointed that his duck painting that was going on a postage stamp was only a three center (3¢). She built up his ego and made him proud of himself.

This movie strikes a bizarre and unforgettable tone because it depicts the criminals as lazy, rash, unhappy, violent, and incompetent, then Marge as friendly, wholesome, life-loving, and actually really good at her job. Like the scene where Marge still sounds so upbeat and lighthearted while she's literally looking at a triple homicide. She's so happy with her simple life and the criminals are miserable people who just dig their lives deeper.

The Mike Yanakeeda (sp) scene was extremely important to the plot. His goal was to lie his way into Margie's heart. Margie didn't go for it but she did believe his lies. Later on when she found out that Mike's tearful story was BS, it got her thinking about the interview with Lundergard and that he probably wasn't being truthful to her. She went with that and it helped turn the course of the investigation.

Fargo is another brilliant Coen Brothers film. William H Macy and Steve Buscemi just brilliant in it, as was Frances McDormand. Even though it is a serious subject it still has that slapstick vibe about it with some great comedy moments. Of course at first we think the kidnappers are some kinda rank amateurs, that maybe the case but Grimsrud is a total psychopath. A trail of crazy needless destruction but still it manages to make great comedy out of all this. Another superb Coen brothers film along with Raising Arizona, Crimewave and the hilarious Burn After Reading and The Big Lebowski among others.

I grew up in an area with literally zero Arby’s. I genuinely had no clue it was straight up fast food, and the ads made it look so good. I finally stopped at one during a road trip when I was in my early 20’s. “Let down” would be a massive understatement

Most people think Marge is just a regular cop, but she's Chief of Police. It's hard to see, but it's on her office door when she enters her office (bearing worms). That's why everyone is reporting to her on the case, and she never really answers to anyone else.

The MinnesOhta winter let the Coen brothers down. It was the warmest winter in decades. I am always amazed at the scene where the deputy is talking to another guy in the street. They are "snorkled" for a blizzard, and the street has standing water from the snow melt.

A couple years later in 1998, there's a movie called 'A Simple Plan' that came out that sort of reminds me of this a bit where the plan doesn't go along exactly the way the hoped it would. Totally recommend it though.

Fargo (1996) was a total surprise/shocking movie I rented at Blockbusters. 1997 swept up about every movie award. Love Steve Buscemi the actor who got shot in the face. He's in many movies. Check him out in Quentin Tarantino's "Reservoir Dogs". He's also in many Adam Sandler movies.

Fantastic movie. The Coen Brothers strike again. Although it says at the beginning that this is a true story, it is not, though it _is_ based on several news bits about unrelated cases that they used to tell the story. The bit with the woodchipper is something you don't soon forget. The Coens are famous for graphic realism but with dark humor inserted here and there. Another one of their movies, "No Country For Old Men" is highly recommended.

I imagine you already discovered this movie was completely fabricated. The brothers who wrote it intentionally misled the audience to make it more interesting. It’s such a well acted movie and your reactions were very entertaining. Yay, you betcha

It’s was loosely based on the murder of Helle Crafts…
@xzonia1
@xzonia1 7 ай бұрын
@@slyphwingReally, the only part they took from that case is the woodchipper. Her husband was having an affair, she wanted a divorce, so he killed her and told people she was visiting relatives and stuff, and he used a woodchipper to dispose of her body because at that time, no one had ever been convicted of murder in their state without a body to prove they were dead. Her case was the first time a murderer was convicted without a victim's body being found in Connecticut. No kidnapping or any of the other events in Fargo happened in the Crafts' case.

Not completely. It was inspired by a real case from the 80's. Thus, it is based on a true story just not in the way people were accustomed to reading the phrase. That's their point in using it.

One of my favorite movies of all time. I have NEVER seen a bad Coen Brothers movie. No Country For Old Men, O Brother Where Art Thou, Raising Arizona, Blood Simple, The Big Lebowski, etc. This could very well be their best. It's funny you said Marge was on it from the "jump", considering her car had to be "jumped" before she could drive it.

William H. Macy gives one of my favorite performances of all time in this movie. Everyone wants to play the hero, or the powerful bastard villain. It takes a kind of sacrifice of the ego to play a character like Jerry - a wimpy, unsympathetic loser - and to do it so well.

I really appreciate how you have tried 37:30 to clarify the background behind Jerry's trouble with money in comprehensive. I have guessed gambling, either. Maybe you like to watch another movie by the Coen brothers: "Miller's Crossing" - a very sophisticately told story of two competing mobsters during the prohibition.
