We checked out this black comedy crime film by the Coen brothers. Apologies for the audio for portions of the video! There were some mic issues.
Thanks for the support! Full reaction: / darkandskull

The big twist is this was not a true story ;-)

The are a couple of things in it which were inspired by real crimes, though the incidents were unrelated. One was a real case involving a GM employee committing fraud, but that’s the only detail that matches. Nothing gruesome there. However, the other is the murder of Helle Crafts. Her disappearance wasn’t claimed to be a kidnapping (a variety of other excuses were used), but it did involve a wood chipper, and her husband was the culprit.

I'm sure you noticed by the end, but the one Shep vouched for was Gaear Grimsrud, the quiet big blonde one. Yappy Carl Showalter was Gaear's "buddy" who Shep didn't know. Notice Shep was a man of few words, like Gaear. Highly doubt Shep could be friendly with someone as yappy and incompetent as Carl. The Mike Yanagita section was important because he lied to her face, and was fooled. Once she found out Mike Y. was a fraud, she thought back to Jerry Lundegaard, maybe he wasn't fully truthful, thus decided to do a second interview with him.

Okay but then why did Shep let Carl stay at his place? The scene where Carl is with the escort and Shep literally pulls her off him. Eh would Shep let a stranger he did not vouch for stay at his place? Think you need to get the dvd and watch thru the movie again

I knew you'd guys would love this movie!!!! To me, this is the quintessential Coen Brothers movie. And if you liked this, you will DEFINITELY like "Raising Arizona", "Blood Simple" and "Burn After Reading", all with Frances McDormand! (she's a supporting role in Raising Arizona, the stars of that one are Nicholas Cage and Holly Hunter, who are fantastic). Man oh man, W. H. Macy and Frances in this movie are amazing. They only have two scenes together but wow, FIREWORKS! :D

I love the mix of grim with humor, and it’s done so well in this. If you want to see a more madcap side of the Coen Bros, I highly recommend _Raising Arizona._ It also happens to be their first major studio release.

I don't think it's only for fun. In the movie it's all about liars and people who take another person's word out of blind trust. I, and almost everyone who has seen the movie too, takes it that it was a true story only to find out they were lied to. The Coen Brothers are nearly yelling at us to stop taking another person's word in sheer faith.

32:00 No Country for Old Men was also made by the Coen Brothers. So it's not like one was inspired by the other, but just that it's the same film makers.

Great movie. Now you should check out the Fargo tv show. If not the whole thing (not even I watched it after 3) at the very least season 1. It is a fantastic follow up to the original film and has one of the best acting performances I've ever seen from Billy Bob Thornton.

The aMike Yanagita scene is to remind he that people lie. She talks to Mike then through one of her old friends, finds out that zMike lied to her, then next morning she goes back to talk to Jerry again and Jerry flees the scene. If that didn’t happen, Jerry would have gotten away (or maybe he’s dumb enough to get caught with alone week head start.

I think it works okay as a parallel lie story But it always seemed too much like a narrative gimmick, a kind of Morris-the-explainer scene, or the Paco death scene in Pat Garrett & Billy the Kid. There to explain something to the audience, that strictly speaking, wasn't really needed. I didn't think Marge needed that revelation, she'd been so perceptive to that point.

1. It isn't actually a true story. That was a hideous fib to make the audience feel more involved. 2. However, there is a 2014 movie titled "Kumiko the Treasure Hunter." The basic story is that some Japanese office lady saw "Fargo," thinks it's real, so goes to the U.S. to look for the briefcase with the rest of the money. The premise sounds funny, but the movie isn't - it is sad. Anyway, you might be interested in watching it. 3. Fun fact: Steve Buscemi's character in "The Big Lebowski" keeps getting told to shut up because his character in this movie talks so much.

IMO the part with Mike was not important, in fact distracted from the story and should have been edited out. I can tell a Coen Brothers movie without reading the credits by the straight up weridness, which I truely enjoy. For a more humorous side of the Coens watch "Raising Arizona"(1987) with Nicolas Cage, Holly Hunter, John Goodman, second only to 1998's "The Big Lebowski".

Nah the Mike scene serves a purpose. Once Marge realizes Mike was lying to her face and she didn’t question if it was true she decides to go back and interview Jerry about the stolen car. And she presses jerry on giving her the truth!

@@kayzeaza A good point, but that point could have been better made using a different vehicle to convey it. An old school mate who had a crush on her, meets up when she is 81/2 months pregnant. Comes across as weird and unbelievable, imo.
