The main box overdrive change will require buying 6 new gears, since there is no tag you will need the numbers off of the main shaft gears to I.D main box. Depending on the auxiliary section Eaton Fuller went through a number of changes through the years, 6 series had cylindrical roller bearings in the main box and 7 series moved into tapered bearings in the auxiliary with helical cut gears.
@firemanjay14726 ай бұрын
Actually, you don’t need all those gears, I believe. We did this on our tow truck 15+ years ago. There are two? Gears only they swap out, it changes your shift pattern so the 3 and 4 positions are switched. We had it done by a heavy transmission repair shop in Edmonton. I can find their name if you are interested. It gave 12 to 15 percent overdrive

@anchorbrandranch6 ай бұрын
So is the 7 series less whiney than the 6?
@Drew-in-NoDak6 ай бұрын
@@anchorbrandranch definitely, it has finer teeth in the front box and helical gears in the back that run smoother. And a updated main shaft with thrust washers between each gear. So you won't burn gears/thrust washers like the 5-series would when pulling hard. Along with many other general improvements.
@davidanderson23936 ай бұрын
On the 10 speed they also made a couple shift cover versions, when you add overdrive to the main box it alters the shift pattern. 4th gear will be where 5th used to be and 5th will be where 4th used to be. Eaton did make a shift cover that would give you a standard shift pattern with an overdrive main box.

Heh heh, I feel your pain Rich! Typical 'Down-Time' 466.🤪 I absolutely despised these engines when I was still in the automotive business. The standard DT-466 wasn't quite as bad, but when the 'E' series came out, our local school district bought several buses with them, and I can't tell you how many hours I spent on the phone with the IHC dealer, and the guy that actually turned wrenches at the bus yard. (They tried to get me to work for them, but I stayed far away from the place!) I just helped with diagnostics once in a while, if I couldn't talk my way out of it..🤣 They also had a couple of 24v. common-rail Cummins-powered Thomas buses that almost NEVER gave any problems (at least engine-wise).😉

Check all the input shaft. Also make sure you don’t need to change it while it’s out. If you need more of these transmissions they’re basically the antique I’m getting ready to throw a couple of them away.
@2wagondragon6 ай бұрын
If the input gear is smaller than the mainshaft gear right behind it, as we can clearly see at 6:18 it is NOT an overdrive. To make it an overdrive you need to change the input gear to a larger one and install smaller countershaft header gears. It may even need more parts than that. You need new parts, there is nothing you can switch around in the box to make it an overdrive.

Good video. You can't swap 4th and 5th (9th and 10th) to make an overdrive as the step between 3rd and 4th ( 8th and 9th) would be too great. The best thing to do is upgrade the 10 speed to a 13 or 15 speed by replacing the back of the transmission, that is easy to then change to an overdrive.

The subsequent Maxxforce engines in 9, 10, 11 L variants are the same exact design as the original DT466-E just with more electronics attached to it, and same problems. The Maxxforce 13 is a special kind of fucked up, it's a Man engine that got a really bad EGR system strapped to it.
