"Farinelli" (1994)
Director: Gérard Corbiau
Awards:
Best Foreign Language Film (Golden Globes 1995)
Nominated for Oscar in the same category
----------------------------------------
In this video appear the arias "Venti, turbini" and "Lascia ch'io pianga" from the opera "Rinaldo" written by Haendel.
If you wonder why the people and Farinelli are so sad when he is singing "Lascia ch'io pianga", is because the translation is "Let me weep over my cruel fate, and that I long for freedom" (en castellano es "Déjame que llore mi triste suerte, y que añore la libertad")

I think that if you hear him you'd be disappointed. In this day and age we have the benefit of the accumulated knowledge of the ages as well as the ability to be instructed by the greatest teachers on the planet. Back in the day you studied with whomever was teaching in your town.

I watched it and it made me cry, it's a beautiful movie and it shows a taugh reality: art needs sacrifice. Yes, Farinelli was an opera superstar at his time, but deep down in his soul it was a great suffering, being mutilated by castration. It's beautiful and sad, but it's worth watching it !

This is one of my favourite films ever! I think despite the historical inaccuracies the film largely stays true to the general facts of Farinelli's career. What I love about it is the whole film is just sheer magic from beginning to end, I now live in Turkey overlooking the Aegean. There is nothing quite so cool as playing Alto Giove from the soundtrack as the sun sets over the Greek Islands. Bring back the sun Farinelli!

Ciao!

In those days they would cut of the the testicles of the talented boys to keep the voice in falset. But this scene how ever it is a mix of Ewa and Dereks voices makes a little tear appear in the corner of my eyes. You nearly feel the pain in the "voice" of Farinelli... absoloutly beautiful

Farinelli facility in execution was stupendous! Composers and singers strove ever to invent new feats of vocal jugglery with which to bewilder and delight the public. The flexibility of Farinelli's voice was so highly developed that the violins in the orchestra could not follow him in his flights. Farelli was renowned for the perfection of his trill and was the first to embellish his airs with rapid chromatic scales. --Francis Rogers, The Male Soprano This movie depictions just that.

@Arsamenes1 unhistorical link between Händels stroke and Farinellis beautifull singing which, earlier in the film, made the ladies allready cry and faint.. By the way, after 1737 Händel wrote another five operas (until 1741) before breaking with this form of music forever and focusing on oratorio.

@UnoriginalComposer I think at the end of this clip, Händel is not "freaking out" but suffers a stroke. Farinelli stayed in London from 1734 till 1737. In the clip Händel tells Farinelli to never write another opera again and indicates, that his own opera company is breaking down cause of Farinellis support to the "Opera of the nobility" the rival company to Händel. This indeed happenend in 1737 and in the same year he suffered a serious stroke. I think the movie only tries to evoke an....

Great film Riccardo Broschi is so cool, I wish his works were not lost because he projected the simple brilliance of Baroque perfectly where as Handel (a much more experienced and talented composer) captured human emotion without losing the structure and order of the Baroque style.

Lascia Ch'io Pianga is beautiful, isn't it. To me, it evokes great sadness. The lyrics translate to "let me weep my cruel fate and sigh for my liberty." There's more but I forgot the rest. There's a vid of a boy soprano from Lithuania singing it on youtube and it pulls your heart out to hear a child singing of such pain. Radu Marian's version is also uot there. He's an adult male soprano (about 30 when he recorded it, I think) and it was a live performance..

"Farinelli" is the obvious name of the prize-winning movie. It is unique and exotic, although it has little to do with the real Carlo Broschi. Check something like Amazon, then click on "new and used from $..." You can get a new, widescreen version for very little.

The voice of Farinelli in this film was a merge of two voices, that of Ewa Mallas-Godlewska and Derek Lee Ragin. The end product was beautiful in terms of movie production but it is probably still a far cry from that of a true castrato. A castrato's voice is neither that of a woman nor a falsettist.

I know this is not an actuall person but the voice f a soprano and a counter tenor digitally pit together but did they do a complete version of the song? I would love to listen to it, this is magnificant. I havent foud a performance of such lhigh level by any acual singer. Some of them are even painfull, its a hard song and no one can sin it like this

No, but I have read it several times now. If you listen to him, he has a kind of tone that is unlike any other countertenor I've heard. He is described as being an "endochrinological castrato" (ie for hormonal reasons at puberty his voice just didn't change in the way most men's do)
