Farm dog POISONED by TOXIC Caterpillars!!! | PORTUGAL FARM LIFE S4-E09 ❤

Our poor farm dog Mimosa has been poisoned by toxic Pine Processionary caterpillars! We had to rush her off to the vets for emergency treatment! Pine Processionary Caterpillars are spreading throughout Europe and are covered in toxic hairs which can kill cats and dogs. The venom in the hairs causes anaphylaxis and necrosis so the pet can suffocate or even lose parts of its mouth! They are a very serious problem in Portugal. In this video we document our experience, talk about what signs and symptoms to look out for and how to treat it.
We are Ken & Gina, and we left the UK in 2019 in search of a simpler life, away from our office jobs, and the hustle and bustle of the big city. We sold our house, left the UK, and left the Rat race behind us, to move to Portugal and buy a farm. We found an amazing farm in Castelo Branco, Central Portugal where we have lived for the last two and a half years. We make these videos for our friends and family to keep up with what’s going on in our new lives and as a record to look back on one day so see how far we have come. So glad you took Mimo straight to the vet, hopefully you'll do a daily check on the fencing & keep it in good repair so no chance of a repeat performance. Friends with rescued mistreated goats & sheep have to do this as wildlife making holes means their animals then investigate the next property potentially ending up on the road. Never a dull moment for you is there! It costs £40 just to walk through the door at our vet.... Big cwtch 🤗 to you all, especially Mimo. Xx

Thanks Annie, yes we walk the fence line every morning and evening but the dogs are usually a few steps ahead of us! Mimo is avoiding this fence line now so i think she learned a lesson from it all.

So glad to see Mimo on the mend. It’s absolute heartwarming to see vets taking care of animals for love of it and not to fund expensive lifestyles. I know in the US vets can be very expensive and some in Canada too, for sure. My vet, in Ottawa, is amazing and they take wonderful care of my animals. They don’t overcharge either. Obviously you’ll have to remain diligent while those caterpillars are roaming around. Take care!

I had never heard of this danger we have those caterpillars here in Virginia too but I did not know the danger! I love how you care for the animals! One of the other YouTub channels I watch adopted an elderly dog! They were at the vet when the elderly owner came in to have the dog euthanized! The vet said she didn’t want to do it so they asked if they could have him! He is doing great!

Bless you all, each of you, including Mimo, were so quick to act and certainly helped each other get the urgent care Mimo needed! I'm so relieved she's survived and pray she'll fully recover without complications. I appreciate your sharing urgent steps to take to help animals survive contact with processionary caterpillars and other such hazards. Maybe sometime you can put up caterpiller traps and bird boxes like Nick did on his infested pines? and burn any caterpillar clusters you see on the ground? It may seem late to start such a project, but it never is too late really, for the animals' safety. 🙏💖

Sara and Luke cut down some pine trees and burned the nests. Was surprised that Theo bought some pine saplings and wondered why he would plant this tree that is the only tree the caterpillars like. Maybe you should tell him not to plant them. Also, can't think of his name, but the man who helps Cindy with building has added traps on his pine trees that collects the worms as they descend the tree. We had a problem in the Eastern US several years ago with another kind of caterpillar, can't remember the name of those, but what people did was put a line of tar around the tree trunk and the caterpillars got stuck to it as they climbed down so that they could not get to the ground and turn into moths. I was in tears your whole episode. I've become very found of vloggers pets and love seeing them. You take good care of your pets. Hopefully your fast action allows Mio to have a full life. This is our third Spring in Portugal and the only time we have ever had a problem. I think its due to the very dry and warm winter we had. Mimo is avoiding that fence now so I think she learned her lesson! :)

So happy that Mimo is now recovering. Our dog Cooper also suffered from the caterpillars when he was a puppy, he now has part of his tongue missing. Only the other week my husband dried himself after a shower with a towel that had been on the line drying. Within seconds he was covered in hives. We found just one Caterpillar on the bathroom floor. Be very careful these caterpillars are terrible

Thanks Maureen, we just got very unlucky. There are two separate sheep fences between the main area of our farm where the dogs walk and the pine forest. We walk this perimeter daily to look for gaps in the fence that animals might have caused overnight. Unfortunately the dogs are always ahead of us and in this instance Mimo popped through the fence and ran after something right into the forest! Shes avoiding this fence line on her walks now so I think she learned her lesson ;)

I am so glad. Very close call. What are these furry creatures good for? Do they affect sheep too We always had dogs vet bills cost a fortune One vet charged us 12£ for information on top of big bill Never went back daughters friend became a vet & she used to look after our older dogs & the medicine ( arthritic) meds where half price. Vets have massive mark up. We never care as long as they are ok in the end. Giving antihistamine will have helped too All best. Have a good st paddy’s day. We have 2 extra bank holidays because of covid. That makes 11 extra days outside of holiday. Not that you guys have to worry about that🙏🇺🇦. 💖💖

Excellent video on the treatment needed after a beloved dog has a run in with a caterpillar many of us are unfamiliar with. Will pass it on to friends in Portugal. So happy she’s okay. I was worried when I seen your short video on her condition. It’s a good idea to keep Benadryl on hand. It’s usually part treatment for anaphylactic shock. Zyrtec is good, butt for this situation or snake bites, Benadryl May be more efficient., and it has broad uses. However, you guys did very well.
