Farm Aid is practically run by **ahem** "them left-wing Marxist hippies", including the likes of Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp, Dave Matthews, and Bob Dylan. Not just folk stars in their own right, but also icons of the counter-culture, civil rights, and political activism. The idea of the family farm doesn't belong to conservative ideology. On the contrary, it directly challenges Big Agri, whose corporate greed has polluted not only the Earth, but also our bodies. I'm confident that the audience members (including the many white family farmers) know what's up.

Whats really funny is how fast people have forgotten that there are very many different shades it's not just Red and Blue.. It's not some checklist you follow... "oh he believes this, he must believe that!" Stop letting them train you to think that way about your fellow man!! There are many factions in each party, and many beliefs within those parties. I have values that belong to both parties. I smoke pot. I believe in the 2nd amendment. I believe in pro-choice, freedom of one's religion, the death penalty and prison for criminals. I am for taxing the rich, and holding both corporations and the government accountable for their actions.. I believe in working hard for yourself and your family, but, I also believe in charity and helping out those who need help and that we need social programs in this country. We arent here to push each other down and walk on each others backs to get where we are going! We are here on this planet to help each other... not fight each other or laugh at each other's misfortunes and pain.. What party do I belong to??? What buzzword does your favorite newsrag call me? Ugh... I can't believe I used to think this was the most genius song I'd ever heard! Thinking like this is so unbelievably infantile. Why do people think it's actually WISE to view the world in black and white, good vs. evil, with us or against us? It REALLY stifles any room for nuance and character, which I now see as utterly counterproductive. The bastards who run the show LOVE this, btw. I have also met Todd, so I know he believes everything he said in the song, but he is a kind soul who can sit down and talk with people of other opinions. The problem with the country are the ones that can't...the Cowboy or hippie, conservative or liberal, Christian or not, we should all respect each other, but I don't see much of that in media from either side. Like it or not, white Christian males are discriminated against in this country, (much more now than when Todd wrote this song twenty years ago) and that's a shame, we should all be kind to each other.

I knew I was gonna enjoy everything so I hadn't bothered to look at the lineup. When we got to the gates my husband left me with our stuff while he went to find our people. Sitting there on the cooler, i heard this song, the one that made me cry and take note of your name the first time I heard it on Mountain Stage, coming from somewhere. I sat there on my cooler surrounded by strangers I knew I loved and cried again. When you got up on stage, that's when I found out you were actually there. Love songs of hope and change as they help us push forward through the trials and tribulations of life. However, human nature will never change to the degree of creating the Utopian world we all secretly hope for in the back of our minds. I believe we are still in our infancy as a species towards evolving into a world of different races and cultures to expect a drastic change and find ourselves in peaceful and state of equality globally,... not in our lifetimes. Not saying we should not work towards that ultimate goal but instead to set realistic goals as any movement in the direction of a potential Utopia comes in extremely small increments and over a lengthy period of time,... probably hundreds and possibly thousands of years from where we currently sit. Working out our differences in a civil manner will most likely accelerate the process towards a better global existence for all,... but the way we have been going about it during the last several years has set us back at least a decade. There are many wounds to be healed between different peoples on our planet that date back thousands of years so it is a game of forgiving and forgetting before we can take legitimate steps forward towards what may resemble that Utopian state we may be looking for,... but even then it won't be perfect as nothing ever is.
