Today I'm starting my 1939 Farmall M hybrid tractor on a cold day in January 2013 to get my hay wagon full of cord wood (for splitting) brought up to the barn. This tractor is older than I am, funny!
I'm using a Napa 6/12 Volt battery charger/booster set to 6 volts 50 amps for a half-hour, then when ready to start 150 amp 6 volt engine start setting.
Remove air cleaner breather tube from rear of carburetor, 2 spray shots of starting fluid in air inlet to carburetor, pull hand choke, check to make sure transmission shift lever is in neutral (extremely important), turn on ignition switch, push starter button. When tractor fires and starts push in hand choke and turn on gas via stop-cock under the gas tank. Have starting fluid can in hand with finger on nozzle to spray into carburetor air inlet when engine first starts running because there may be air in the gas line. This would cause the engine to stall, the gas in the line will then flood the carburetor and restarting will be a bit more difficult. Old carburetors have internal wear, even after rebuilds, which is ultimately the cause. When these tractors were new the carburetors didn't flood and starting in cold weather didn't have these detrimental problematicae.
