Thank you guys for supporting and watching the video! A few things! 1) the roof has more support then what is seen in this video 2) I did use okay sand but since it has been switched to construction sand for the dust bath areas 3) used chicken wire because this isn’t their main protection just to keep the chickens inside it during the winter Thanks again you guys are the best🐥😁

*NO D.E.* - "Food Grade" is NOT *"SAFE"* just because its SAYS "Food Grade" and *"ORGANIC"* !! DTE Raises SILICA DUST when dry in feed or dry DUST baths , and this causes respiratory PROBLEMS in birds AND bird OWNERS . DTE KILLS HONEY BEES *HORRIBLY* and _PAINFULLY_ . DTE is microbial SKELETONS . "Harmful to breathe" ?? Think SILICOSIS and *LUNG CANCER* . No short term symptoms ? Self-induced Silicosis and Lung Cancer take YEARS to develop . You probably have some on its way *NOW* . Sorry , but this is INESCAPABLE . The risk is * NOT* LOW . You are warned by the label to NOT BREATHE . Do NOT use ANY DTE with your chickens and ESPECIALLY _NOWHERE _*_NEAR_* your GARDEN , where - _you know_ - *HUMANS* FORAGE for Dinner !!

This is GREAT inspiration for upgrades to our coop here in NC. The snow was so heavy it bowed the 2x4s holding up our wire roof. We found out a lot that first Winter. I love your tree limb ideas as it will help keep them busy and a way to keep fights to a minimum. Im definately copying the tree limbs. Our coop is covered in greenhouse plastic with rollup side flaps for summer. We have 5 hens and a roo. Lets keep em happy! Robin in NC USA 2024

The roof as you have it in this video will not hold up very long with snow on it. The rain will run off but snow won't just slide off...unless you spray it down with olive oil before each snow fall or a snow storm also you can heat up the bottom of the clear roof with rope lights or something. First thing that needs to be done is turn all of the roof's 2×4s a quarter turn so they are not so saggy...and put a couple more 4×4s vertically to support the roof.

@@AcresOfAdventure Just curious on the question of rodents. Last night I saw three mice in the run at bedtime, two inside the run and one outside, and have started setting mousetraps at night and picking them up in the morning before I let the girls out into the run. I remove food bowls every night for cleaning but the girls do scatter food some and although I sweep at night I know there are crumbs left behind. Curious how other chicken Moms deal with pests.

Fantastic work, man! I didn’t think about putting metal on the bottom to protect from wind. I hope that I soon will have the courage to build a nice run like this! I’ll be watching your rain system video soon. It’s awesome how this all works as a system, with proper planning (re-purposing fallen trees, using old bedding as compost, etc). This style of run looks so simple yet I fear failing at creating a similar design. I really need to get over that fear along with the fear of other things as a new/first-time homeowner. Right now, I feel like my skill level is basically just enough to make a hoop coop lol. Just have to embrace the learning experience! The compost food tower is another great idea and I really like the dust baths. My backyard is almost all dirt/rocks, so I’m researching which bedding would be best. The mulch seems like it’s working well with you! Very cool how the chickens can go under the coop. Great job and for what it’s worth, I really appreciate seeing a good dad. That’s awesome. I can tell you’re a great dad. PS I did just level out some ground and put in 2 raised garden beds! Can’t wait to give those a shot.

Prediction #1: They will dust bathe under the coop where it is dry and not in the tires. Ditch the tires. Replace the tires with a log. In evenings if it’s not cold dampen the log and surrounding area. During the night his will attract grubs and bugs. In the morning the chickens will have breakfast. Prediction #2: They will enjoy the new roosts. Every week or so change the location of at least one. They will appreciate the variety. #3: I’ve had a hen who enjoyed the swing, but the vast majority do not use it. Chicken wire: You know what’s best, so just do it. As you yourself mentioned, chicken wire keeps chickens in, but doesn’t keep predators out. The metal at the lower level will keep out some predators, as well as the wind. Should a predator gain access the chickens will be more vulnerable since they’ll be trapped in an enclosed environment. While the weather is warm enough for them to free range, do your flock a solid and put hardware cloth on top of the chicken wire. You won’t regret it. Diatomaceous Earth, as you mentioned, is perfectly safe in the open air, so long as it’s food grade. When I apply DE in the run I do wear a face mask, preferably KN95, because my face is so close to the dust. Also I mix it with dirt in the run (not the enclosed coop) at dusk when my chickens are in the coop. Best wishes.

Good to see you're putting the needs of the chickens first over the needs of humans. Unlike those dreadful Eglu houses which haven't thought of how it is to be a chicken. Chickens can't stand on something the thickness of a pencil like their ladder rungs and perches and they can't perch comfortably when the roof is on their heads. Your house and run is great. I think your comost idea is a good one, but I think chicken wire would give them more access to the food scraps instead of hardware cloth! It is kind of like a tease when the good stuff is in the middle! You might find a chicken inside the bin one day! LOL! Love the natural perches!

Or…make it bigger and shallower so they CAN get in it and they will make you some fertile compost. And have the time of their lives doing it. Look up chicken tractor on steroids here on KZbin to see what I mean.

I've heard chickens aren't really into swings usually. Thanks for the video. I wanna do some cool perches like that too!

Great video thank you! and for anyone living on the coast, Roofing held by 1X4s is going to turn into a kite landing on your neighbors roof. So, build accordingly!

Your swing isn't wide enough. they can actually swing on it if it is a little wider. You might want to switch it out. Nice outside run pen for them. I especially like all the branches.
