I agree DON'T REMOVE THE WINDOWS! Dark bedrooms are depressing, if you need it to be dark blackout drapes work great and can be pulled back and sheers between them that can provide privacy

My sister and her husband are in the middle of remodeling a mansion built in 1913. It’s currently stripped down to the studs after removing all the plaster. I love seeing old homes turned back to their former glory. Thank you for allowing us to be part of this journey.

Don't worry about saving all the original trim like the baseboard It's gonna be more trouble than it's worth and like your dad said it's all tied in with the plaster. Instead recycle materials from what you demo and incorporate them into the trim. It will be alot easier than trying to work around things that should just be replaced.

I love these videos about the restoration of your dad’s house. I’m so excited the barn will be saved! I know your dad has his own mind about the house, but those baseboards could be removed and salvaged and replaced. We salvaged original trim from a lot of old houses to restore our 1910 house. And the lead paint can be painted over with no issues. Also, about the beams, they are lovely, but I would highly recommend insulating between the floors of the house. We didn’t think about doing that and every footstep and small article dropped on the wood floor above seems magnified several times over. Thanks for taking us along on this journey!

Are any of the fireplaces going to be repaired? My great grandfather built a farmhouse in Michigan. I see a lot of similarities of what was going on behind the walls, since there were several rooms in the farmhouse never finished. Smart to take it down to the studs as they didn’t have insulation back then, plus it’s easier to redo electrical and plumbing. Pretty common to find graves on a site, a lot of families had their own burial plot on the land.

Yes a metal detector would definitely be fun! You might find some really old artifacts. Even in the house! Pet Cemetary, very sad but is it the lady who was single and had no children? Her animals were her kids. Thanks for Sharing the story. There is a spray called Odoban that is supposed to kill bacterial germs also. A man was remodeling and gutting trailer they used that spray to kill germs! Leave the windows, brings in fresh air and sunshine! What state are you in? I was curious about the farmhouse location. Ask the neighbors about the history of the house and land also. God Bless!

Looks identical to how are home was gutted out. Very very wise decision. Now you can run all new electrical wiring and brand new electric box. And then can do new plumbing then insulation. We also took out old trim and baseboard for same reason. Great choice too. We also put in brand new HVAC system. A heat pump with air conditioning. We also put in brand new windows thermopane tilt windows same size as original windows. So happy everything is going along well for you all.

It was insulation with glue substance within insulation insulation made out of shredded newspaper. Great great option. Has saved us tremendous energy cost. And has kept us cozy and outside noise down inside amazingly. Was sprayed between each stud very highly. Then we added blanket insulation in ceiling after drywall attached. And blanket insulation placed under floor rafters. Great great investment. With thermopane windows.

Laura, they arent ceiling beams they are structural floor joists, by having the lath and plaster ceiling they maintain the structural rigidity for the upper floor and especially the room above. Its necessary to replace the ceiling and not leave it open as is. He can add a decorative tongue and groove wood ceiling with faux beams in place of drywall and get the same effect if it's in the budget but this restoration is an expensive undertaking with all the electrical, plumbing, heating, roofing, foundation and masonry replacement and repairs.

If I could afford it, I'd definitely have tombstones made for my dogs, and horses, and cats...maybe even the turtles. ;) Once the kids are out of the house (or in this case, the woman didn't have any children) your animals become your new kids, they really do. They've even proven that the same emotional bond develops (parent/child) with humans in regards to their animals (which is why some of our animal laws, especially band breed are complete BS and can have a devastating emotional toll on the owner, not to mention the poor animal ). Anyhow, if they're still in place, or you kept them, I'd love to see some photos of them. I just think it's really sweet that she loved her animals so much.
