I guess I am a maker in every sense of the word.
Even when I know I can get something relatively inexpensively at the store, I still find so much satisfaction in learning how to make it myself at home.
Being a maker allows me to add my own creative spin on everything and enjoy the process of seeing pieces and ingredients become finished things.
Sure, I can buy handmade dresses for my girls on Etsy, but adding an extra ruffle here, and little ties there, is such a rewarding experience for me.
Even though I can get a knitted hat for my baby boy at the Dollar Store, nothing can replace the love a mama puts into making it.
There is so much more value in a handmade piece. Love, care and creativity are behind every item.
I want to see my kids have the same love for creating that I do.
I want to see them bake the bread, knit the hat, sew the dress and arrange the flowers.
Their homes will be richer for it.
In the last year I added something new to my handmade repertoire.
Beeswax Candles!
I bought these beeswax pellets amzn.to/2hp0VNr on Amazon. Until I can get more wax from the local beekeeper, this is the route I will go.
They were so easy to work with and inexpensive.
I added the one pound package of beeswax pellets and 1/2 cup coconut oil to my double broiler set up.
I also added a good size hunk of cocoa butter, for the delicious chocolate smell.
It’s basically; melt the wax, add the wick, pour it in.
I will get a little more detailed in the instructions to make it feel like I’m really teaching you something here, but there isn’t a whole lot to it.
But, trust me, if you make these for gifts, your family and friends will be super impressed.
I used hot glue to secure the wicks to the bottom of the jars, doing my best to center them as much as possible. I bought these wicks on Amazon.
To keep the wicks centered, I wrapped them around skewers, that I laid on top of the jars.
After the beeswax and coconut oil were fully melted, I added essential oils. This step is totally optional.
Beeswax smells delicious all on its own, but I wanted to experiment with some different scents.
I wanted to make a relaxing candle, so I added lavender essential oil.
This stuff hardens VERY quickly, so don’t take your time filling the jars.
If you do, just return the bowl to the double broiler.
Since I had poured my wax in a measuring cup for easy pouring, the wax was sticking to the sides of it. I just put the measuring cup in the oven for a few minutes on 350, and it was liquid again.
It took the larger candles about 5-10 minutes to set up completely.
What delicious combinations can you come up with?

I learned the hard way only use things that can tolerate an oven or boil when working with beeswax. Things don’t always go to plan, and I used an untried lotion recipe that had waaaaaay too much wax to oils and distilled water and I could NOT get it out. I had used my food processor to mix it. 😭 I normally use my metal stick blender. My food processor bowl got warped. Luckily it was less than $40, but we don’t have that to replace it yet. Lesson learned!

I can really appreciate when people love cocoa butter, I’ve used it since I was a kid, my dad always made me and now that I’m older I’m so happy I did. My skin is super clear and beautiful. I use it on my kids now and so is theirs. And it smells wonderful! I’ve had people tell me they don’t like the smell but whenever I’m at work I save the day with my palmers or all natural cocoa butter I make from scratch. Awesome vid hun! ❤️ cocoa butter is the best!

Sometimes when you just stick the wick down with wax, when the candle burns down to the last few inches the heat from the flame will melt that wax and make the wick come loose and float around the jar which can be a fire hazard. As long as you have a somewhat thick dot of hot glue, it won't melt with the heat of the flame and should stay secure.

I know this video is old and someone might have already said it, but you should use a flexible silicone type measuring cup to pour the wax so that way you can just dump the hardened wax back into the double boiler/bowl and have a way easier cleanup.

Hi Lisa, I have a quick question and hope that you can answer soon as these are for Christmas gifts. I ordered the galvanized tins that you suggested and the bag of beeswax. The holders are bigger than I thought they would be and am wondering if the one bag of wax is enough for all 6 of the holders if I fill them about 3/4 full? I don't want to run out in the middle of making. Thank you!!!

No, I didn't have any problems. I just didn't realize I was only able to make 2 candles.I was kinda bummed. I felt this part should have been specified in the description or video. As for the essential oils I forgot to add some in, while it was in the bowl, because as she stated, it does harden fast. So,I wanted to get the wax in their jars asap. So, what I did was, I added drops of it into the candle itself while the wax was still in liquid form. It gives it a very light scent. I should have added more to give it a more stronger smell. I added in about 15 drops of lavender oil. Hope this helps. :)

It really is hit or miss and experimentation. Some can be like 30 to 35 drops! If your used to adding essential oils to carrier oils for massage or diffusers youd be used to using 3 or 4 drops. So it might seem like "really? Are you sure? For real, 30?" But go for it haha

it really depends on the size of the vessel and wick etc. you can actually look online and you will find ways to calculate the burn time based on your vessel, wick and type of wax used

Would you recommend the Berkey? My husband and I are thinking of making the investment, but wondering if a reverse osmosis system might be more convenient.

We really love ours! We have had it for 7 years now. It is pretty inconvenient to have it sitting out on the counter, and you have to fill it daily, but I ended up choosing it for 2 reasons. 1. Its the best filter for removing chemicals, pesticides, VOCs and fluoride that I know of. 2. It is the cheapest per gallon filtered because the filters last so long. I add on the fluoride and arsenic filters in addition to the black carbon. Here is my link if you end up deciding on one: www.berkeyfilters.com/berkey-water-filters/big-berkey.html?a_aid=5b2cf1884101a&a_bid=8b4878fc I plan to do a full on review on my channel at some point. :)

Hello Lisa, have you ever encountered a problem with a hole forming around the wicks as the candles cooled? My daughter made these yesterday and only one came out good. Most of them had a caved in hole down the center by their wicks.
@FarmhouseonBoone
@FarmhouseonBoone 6 жыл бұрын
Teresa Kelly I haven't noticed that when making them. I have heard some people say they keep theirs in the oven on warm while they are cooling to keep them from setting up too quickly. I wonder if that could possibly be the problem? You could melt the messed up candles in the oven and repour into a new jar with a new wick.

Can you remove the glue from the bottom of the container when you have used up the candle? Could you just use melted the wax mixture to attach the wick?
@FarmhouseonBoone

Yes! You can totally remove the glue from the bottom of the jar, but it will take some arm work :) You could use melted wax, but I am not sure if it will stick, but if you try it let me know if it works! :)

Thanks a lot for this video. But I have a question: I used only beeswax and a few drops of essential oil for the wax. And now my candle, the wax, only melts in the middle, even in the thin jars. Is it because I just need to add coconut oil or butter? Any help will be appreciated.

Coconut oil softens the beeswax a bit so the candle burns evenly

Barbara LH Ebel they are pretty long lasting but they do not melt exactly like soy candles. They melt down the center. When one is down to the bottom of the wick you can re melt and pour into a new jar with a new wick.
@sparkybish

You might need a thicker wick for beeswax.
@kathyschieb6686

Farmhouse on Boone I have always waited for them to harden just a bit and add more so they are not sunken in the middle. This make your wick burn too fast for the wax. So have you tried topping them off?
@stitcherscottage
@stitcherscottage 5 жыл бұрын
Beeswax candles need a lot of wick trial and error. If they tunnel, it’s because the wick is too small. If the wick is too big they will burn too fast. I found a #5 wick in a Ball jelly jar works best.

What type of essential oils? I have Young Living oils. Was told to be careful with burning oils. Any advice? I get really bad headaches with fake store bought candles. Hence why I want to make my own

I find citrus oils work really well. Or you could just go with unscented. If you do use EO's maybe just buy the Now brand and don't use your good Young Living ones.

I've read that burning essential is unsafe (they say it changes the chemical makeup of the oil and makes it unsafe to breathe). Have you read anything on this? I trust your judgement so I figured I'd ask ya if you've heard this. I've got a kitty with asthma and beeswax is supposed to be super good for clearing the ick from the air and even help with asthma symptoms so I've been super interested in making some candles of my own and even putting those beeswax pellets in my warmer. Thanks! :D

If you're looking for candles that help purify the air and help your kitty breathe a bit better I would recommend using pure beeswax candles and omitting the essential oils. Essential oils are volatile and the compounds do indeed change when heat is added to them. While I can't speak to the effects of burning oils, I would err on the safe side and use pure beeswax to ensure you're getting the health benefits you're looking for.

If you were making PINT size Candles....what is your ratio of wax : essential oil? I made a few pint size candles for Christmas gifts and you could bearly smell the scents. Ugh. For Pint size I used 2 pints of raw soy wax chips for each 1 candle. I added in 6-10 drops of vanilla oil and you could barely smell it. Someone told me I'm probably closer to using 1 oz of oil/pint candle. That, as you can imagine, is going to be very costly. I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks! Sharon

I'm late, but I saw there was no reply to your question so I figured I would pop in and answer it :) Make sure you are burning your candle for at least 3-4 hours at a time so the melt pool spreads all the way across the top of the candle. If that isn't solving the issue, your wick is probably too small for your container diameter.
