The thing is, a real actual farmhouse would be collected and somewhat eclectic. What we are calling farmhouse nowadays I call "hobby lobby style" Its not really what a farmhouse would look like. I like your idea here. It makes a lot more sense.
@joyceyager36806 жыл бұрын
Rhiannan Caraway , I love the HobbyLobby style comment! All the decor out now is so cookie cutter. I lived in a farmhouse but never felt the need to put a sign on every wall with a cow or the wild farm on it. You can definitely look around and find classier wall decor and furniture pieces not made of MDF. We go to thrift shops and auctions to find our home accessories at places like that. I rarely even go to HL or Michaels anymore, it is just too much “ farm” for me.

Omg yes! You took the words right out of my mouth. I fell victim to this, and when I looked around my home one day it all just clicked. None of these things make me happy. The only signs I still keep in my home today, were gifts my friend literally made in her garage and they mean 10x more than the same thing purchased at Hobby Lobby.

some of them look great though, not all modern farmhouses have the hobby lobby look. though many do. Some folks, like Lisa, prefer the “vintage style” farmhouse, others the “modern”, your comment comes across as judgemental. Like Lisa’s style is better. I like both actually because it’s what “I” like, not because I have anything negative to say about either although my preference is never to go vintage in everything.

I live in a house in Old Town Alexandria, VA which was built in 1830. My best advice is to live in your house through all of the 4 seasons, through all different temperatures and lighting patterns and let the house speak to you. Do not rush out and buy everything all at once. When I researched our house which is now almost 200 years old, I found that the original owners were musicians who performed in Washington and Alexandria. He was a vocalist and she was a violinist and they lived in the house for 40 years. I put our antique Steinway in the front parlor to honor their history even though everyone said that a sofa would be more useful. Now I find that children often sit on the piano bench and I can even squeeze two benches together for more seating. Trust your gut, learn your history, and take your time.

Eclectic. This is the basis of American, French, and English country. It's a really nice table brought from the city home, next to a sofa that was grandma's and lights from another century above a new table holding great grandmothers china. All the generations, all the lives, blended into a cozy HOME. This is what homes looked like for centuries before we became such a consumer society and made everything disposable and easily accessible.

When I was young I used to go buy a room full of matched sets of furniture. Over time I evolved into the collected decorating style you describe. I had an EBay store for 10 years which led me to thrift stores, estate sales and auctions. Whenever I found a treasure I loved I just kept it-at least until I found something I liked even better. Now I have a one of a kind eclectic home full of antiques and collectibles and memories that could never be duplicated. People come in and say, “Wow, this is gorgeous,” and they say they wish they didn’t have to leave. Even my grandchildren tell me, “When I think of home I always think of your house.” I totally understand what you mean. You are well on your way already. 💕

I have to say, bravo! Patience is a virtue (that is sorely lacking in our culture today) and you are developing that in yourself by waiting as you decorate your home. I also love that you are not just buying reproduction pieces but buying stuff that's already out there- they don't make things like they used to anyway so you're getting value for buck.

I have been decorating my apartment for years. I have a vision of what I want and will wait to find the perfect piece. I also have family heirlooms, like my grandmother's blue and white Wedgewood collection. Because those are beautiful and sentimental, I redecorated my living room around her pieces. Before I got antiques from my family, I loved the cottage style. Now, I have changed direction and have a very deliberate and eclectic mix of antiques, woods, and whites that work together and create a cozier place. Everywhere I turn, I see something from my family. It creates warmth in my home and my heart. Good luck on creating your own hand-picked home. Nobody can copy you or recreate it. The home will be unique to you and your family and THAT is what makes it special.

My family is from England and this is the way I was raised. Our homes growing up always had an English country cottage aesthetic. Everything beautiful and well made from different periods goes together especially in a Victorian house. I have been decorating this way for decades. Although I love the look of the all white decor I could not live with it for very long. Its too sterile. We have since rehabbed a rural ranch home but in a cottage style. Just about all of our better antique pieces were moved to the new house and they fit in beautifully. I thought I wanted a rustic decor but have fallen back into that country cottage vibe. I just love it and it saved us a ton of money 😉. I will paint a few of our pieces. Its refreshing seeing that you have decided on a more evolved and collected over time style...

Girl I know EXACTLY what you are trying to say. We've been in our house almost three years, and at first I started with the clean, slightly farmhouse look (but not like totally there with all the pig, chicken, cow sign nonsense) and over time, I just realized I was making my house look the way I thought others like and realized it really wasn't me and wasn't exactly the most functional.Since then, I've ditched all faux plants (I've been adding real ones all over my home), and stopped buying fake old things, and started focusing on decor that had a purpose. Whether it be for sentimental reasons, or basic functionality. Not only has it allowed me to keep a clutter free home, I stopped buying so much useless crap from Target and Hobby Lobby, etc. Don't get me wrong, those places are fine, but c'mon the designs are SO overly done and how many of us living in the city need a fake weathered sign that says "Gather." I can totally see the vibes of this new home for you guys as both inviting, warm, and functional. Love it!

Furniture scale is key in a Victorian home. Nine foot ceilings can dwarf most of today's furniture pieces. Pendant style light fixtures, floor length draperies or lace panels, crown molding at the ceiling line, picture molding and oversized artwork can help to balance out the room. My suggestion is to frequent local auctions, estate sales and flea markets in your area. Bring along your wish list, including furniture dimensions, and a tape measure. The perfect piece found over time will bring you the most joy and satisfaction. TFS.

That has been my look for years but I call it collected. My favorite magazine is The English Home which I have subscribed to for about 20 years. (Yes, I'm much older....probably your mom or grandmothers age) If you check out the English style, not Downton Abbey extravagance, it is usually a very collected look. The British have had homes, art, furniture handed down for generations. The sofas and or chairs are usually slipcovered and have cushy backs and seat cushions with rolled arms. I certainly haven't been blessed with such, but I try to have the comfortable lived in look they have in their homes.

Excellent choices. Each house has its own personality and it is obvious that you understand that. My house is an older house with its own quirks. The one I had before had the high ceilings. I put Anaglypta wall covering going up the staircase. I did not put it up although I have wallpapered a lot. It was put up with a clay based glue. It becomes part of the wall and is virtually indestructible. In the bedroom I did a wainscoting of lincrusta wallpaper with a wide molding at the top. I loved both of these choices and would use them again. It gave me a smile knowing the historical details of the use of these two products. They came in from England. There are times when spending a little more means a lifetime of beauty. You have excellent taste. I love your house.

I'm so glad you are changing direction with this lovely old house. While I have no experience with American farmhouse style, I do know European farmhouses since both sets of my grandparents were farmers. Their houses were full of color and mismatched patterns. Farming was hard work and these people wanted their houses to be as colorful and cheerful as they could make them with their limited resources. The perfectly styled white and grey farmhouses of KZbin bloggers are the farthest things from true farmhouse style.

I think I got caught up in the pintrest boards and all the neutral minimal homes and how they looked neat and tidy and clean...but upon trying to recreate it in my own home, it just didnt seem like it had any of OUR character. I started looking through my home and the things I love and asking myself questions. Why do I love this? Why does it work in our home? So now I am just going to buy things I love/need. If need a chair or rug, im not going to buy anything until I find something I truly love. Keeping a tidy home is one thing entirely different than CURATING items that you love and making your house YOUR HOME.

I can so resonate with you. I love the clean white farmhouse look and I've tried to emulate that in my home at different times, but I always keep going back to what I consider to be an old world country look because it feels more warm and cozy. I display my grandmother's set of tea cups, lots of mason jars, and hanging cast iron in my kitchen. In my bathroom, I have my walls covered in old embroidered samplers that have been made by the women in my family over the years. I have lots of old books in the built-ins in my living room and an old oil painting of children shelling walnuts passed down to me by my grandmother. My bedroom has a very colorful old floral quilt on the bed and an old antique schoolhouse desk. I've often felt that some of these things can look too fussy and old fashioned and that I should update them, but recently changed my mind. I live an off grid homestead lifestyle. It just makes sense to me that my home would have old country charm instead of the modern farmhouse "perfect". I love that you are going this way with your decor!! I can't wait to see you put it together. :)

You're doing a great job finding pretty things to go with your Victorian farmhouse. After you live in a new house for a little while, you start to know exactly what it needs. You are right to take it slow and only buy what you know will give you the feeling you want for the rooms.

A little discomfort is good. I love your ideas for your new home, matching your furnishings with your house! Collected rather than perfect seems to be the way most homes come together through the years.

My hubby and I have moved a few times in the past few years. I have many expensive hand built cabinets made from vintage doors and windows that we plan to keep forever and pass on to our children. Each house we live in has been very different and my vintage pieces go to each house. Accessories are always changing for each home. Make your house whatever you want it to be. I love to see you adding in more color. With your white walls and trim, you need color. Enjoy the hunt as you remodel and buy pieces for your farmhouse. Add the pieces that speak to you. That is what makes a house a home.

I agree... every house is different and needs to be decorated as such!

I think this is how most people decorate. Just with things they love and that have sentimental value.

I love that you’re taking a more collected approach. We have a Victorian house too, and it is so inspiring for a more collected style. It seems like you’re going from a highly planned to a more intuitive approach! :) love watching it happen!

Love your ideas! Good luck! I get what you are saying. Let your family know what you are doing. The attics and hand me downs are the best.

Love it, period curated. Absolutely makes the most sense for your home. Classic antiques will never go out of style, but the trendy “farmhouse” look will. Though I thought you did your “farmhouse” style quite well in your old home, it was very classy and looked all your own and not like an exact copy of what everyone else is doing.

It really does take time to find those pieces that speak to you, but well worth it! Some of the best places I have found to collect is, flea markets, estate sales, and yes garage sales!

That is what I do... and it is basically just buying only what I LOVE. I don't go out and force purchases. I take my time and buy only what i love. I know it when I see it. You can't go wrong with that!

My house is pretty much decorated in the style you are looking at. Most of what I buy comes from flea markets, antique shops, and auctions. I don't have any set theme in my house but have several small "collections" of things. I think that if you like something, it will go with the other things you like. My house if full of lots of color. I have never had a very big budget to decorate with so I have always shopped for bargains. It also helps that my husband is a cabinetmaker by trade and has built many pieces of our furniture. Also, I have always sewn for my home so make my own curtains on the few windows I have curtained. I have made all my own pillows, etc. I love your new farmhouse...my dream house in fact. Really enjoying your videos and looking forward to each new one. Thank you for sharing.

I totally understand the concept. My house is 90% thrifted and has antique shop items. It did take me time to piece everything together but it’s so worth it.

I totally understand what you mean! My whole house is "collected" more eclectic but still clean and not cluttered. I'm a big thrifter/estate sale/ second hand lover and I started collecting things for my home and found a surplus that I started picking up and reselling on to pay for my treasures for my home. Rugs are the hardest thing to find in my area at any kind of reasonable price. Great finds

Rugs are hard here too! Hoping I get lucky with a few soon.

I love that hanging light for the kitchen, it’s darling!!!! The green is patina. Looks like possibly brass. I agree, your home calls for a little bit different style and I love what you picked out so far. The chair! Oh my gosh, I’m dying. That is so perfect.
