In my supply of used cams - I have 3 Engle 110 - they all are different. Have not put the mic to them but looking down the shaft they are different. I had heard over the years Engle has altered the lift/ratio on their cams. I would imagine due to the fuel - lack of QUALITY fuel. As it has gotten worse over the years. Good info - I've been wanting to do a video myself to show those cams. May be after the first of the year .

Great information on your channel! I've been busy researching engine build combinations to figure out how to tune a 1776cc dual port with an engle 100 cam paired with a 34 pict and SVDA. Engine is a mofoco rebuild and not installed in the '74 ghia yet. Getting different info everywhere I look and mostly that my set up won't work. Please give me some good advice as I'm about out of money and can't do dual carbs... also, I have 39/32 valves

I have some old cams that are all over the place in their lifts. .304 .328 .383 and the most weird one was the old J.C. Whitney cam on their HP kit . on the back side of it , it was level with the shaft ? It was like that because it was to deal with what you had to do with fly cutting your heads. I dont remember what it was but it was over 1/8 . The kit cam with springs ,retainers and keepers 87mm piston and cyl. and get this they suggested a power pulley? When George from Georges Mach. looked at the motor apart he said. He said what the hell thats every thing to overheat your motor. But I put a pee shooter muffler and on my 71 bus within 2 weeks racing Kieth with his Karma Ghia When the light change in first gear all of a sudden there was alot of noise . so we pulled over it had broke both pee shooters off. Keith said that the front came off the street over a 2 feet. whoops.

I have really enjoyed this series of VW videos. I have learned a lot an am glad that you decided to chronicle your many years of experience building VW engines. I was really into VW's when I was a kid, but moved on. I recently got a 1962 based dune buggy, and this series has helped me refresh my skills and has been invaluable in selecting parts I might want to use for my build. Here is a question I am wrestling with. I have a 1974 2 liter type 4 motor with dual 44 Webers I can use for my buggy (and get a 200mm flywheel for it). I also got a 1600 dual port with the buggy and I have a set of 40mm Webers for that build. Which one would be the better choice to use for the motor for that project in your opinion?

the difference between stock and aftermarket cams is the lobe separation, from what i understand. Generally speaking, the shorter duration high lift would be good for low end power but will float at high rpms, a change in separation changes the compression in the power stroke so the valves close at the last microsecond before explosion.

Hey mate im going to build an 1600 dp "stock engine with an supercharger and a solex addhe 40 carb now i want the engine to be more spicy and some better gas response.. now im thinking to put in a new cam what can you recomand? I was thinking about a 120 or 110 .. wil that work or is that to big? I wil put onn another exhuast but im not sure for what im going with.. id would love to have some advice 🤙🏻

The amr 500 is over spun on the 1600s I think the redline is 5000 when runing a decent amount of boost from what I’ve reaserched so I’d do maybe something that peaks at around 4500-5000

If someone had a 1500 or a 1600 would it be more cost effective to get a good cam for ~$200 to get more horsepower or is it better to upgrade engine to a bigger engine for around ~$600 and a stock cam maybe with ratio rockers?

Bigger is only better if you change the weakest link. the cam duration is just too short on the stock cam. Camshaft should be primary focus. They also do reground stock cams that are reprofiled to some upgraded grinds. Or Scat c20 or c25 $85

Have you ever run across a 1969 Dual- relief single port bus 1600, wih serial munber B51357 60 hp heads with larger valves than the 1600 single port 47 hp motors i am looking for one head . I am just curious if you might have one in your head collection.

well after a couple shops had them go flat everyone around here stopped using them. THe cam blanks are all made by Scat for everyone. but I was talking to Tom from scat and he was saying it is the grind. so I would stay clear of them till someone gets the word that it has been corrected.

I have a web 86 it is good. Cheaper is a engle 100 or 110. can be gotten in regrinds too really cheap. all good 86 is the best but more expensive. Available at Brothers machine shop in Ontario CA.

not really if you dont go too big engle 100 or web 86 can last as long or longer than stock. with single high rev springs and ratio rockers on the 86. They will outlast a stock mag case for sure.

no, engle lifters with engle cams. Many engles are ground on the SC1 style blank and that will tear apart a softer lifter. Also never use old lifters on a new cam

fk42 with a power band of 1500 to 5500, 275 adv. dur. and ac.net says dual springs? that's just hd spring range. why in the heck would they say that?

Scotty C when you run larger ratio rockers, the lifters don’t move as much. The ratio rockers makes the valve more more than the lifter.

that is what I was thinking. I think I would run single high rev. and go with it. maybe 1.25 ratio rockers instead of the 1.5 or 1.4

Mike Fn Garage yes sir, 1.25’s would not make the valve and springs work as hard as the 1.4-1.5’s rockers. Again, personal preference will win any debate regarding engine topics.

@@VWJawbreaker the lifters don't move any differently at all. that's a very important observation. i have an entire tech vid on valve train energy. 24 views in 2.4 years and according to my analytics most viewers are gone within a minute. in short, only part of the mass of the valve train has an increase in velocity. the energy to control that increase is contained in the spring. the spring is being compressed more so it contains more energy and in fact is a crap load more. more stored spring energy means the same spring will control the increased valve end energy through the same rpm range. what probably happens is that someone now runs their engine to 6k and experiences valve float. well that's not 5500 rpm anymore. of course another problem with vw camshafts is that you can't get a exact lift/velociity/accel profile. maybe an fk42 has a wicked accel profile and does need dual springs. would engle ever think to clue us in with a chart? heck no, we're just a bunch of vw idiots too stupid to understand any of that stuff.

Scotty C I subbed to you, I’ll have to look for that video at a later time. To be honest, anything over stock will increase stress on components.... that’s part of the cost of going higher performance. There has to be a balance for a daily driver however. The saying, gotta pay to play, is around for a reason. It costs more to go fast, of course then you need to stop faster also. If you’re not careful it can snowball into a large wtf moment.
