Erik from Farpoint Farms reviews his Mighty Mule FM500 Gate Opener.
The unit is overall a good investment, but it does have some shortcomings and should be sold as a more complete kit.

Thank you for the great review. I'm looking for a push to open setup and I could not find any on KZbin and yours was the only one. Appreciate your time and effort to post. Now all you need is a sign that says - Property protected by an AR-15.

My brother in law installed a gate like yours. My sister said it was to protect the bad guys from bro-in law. The last guy that broke in their house got caught by the in-law. The bad guy was pleased when the cops got there to rescue him.

I'm in the process of engineering my first motorized gate solution and I appreciated your video and dialog. Just a tip, but if that wire running to the lock is exposed, it makes defeating the lock very easy. Maybe you could use some thick-walled steel flexible conduit if you can't complete hide the wire in the gate tubing. Thanks again for the video!

I have install gates for years and have used the best equipment starting at 1,500 up to 3,800 for the cost of just the equipment and every so often they will have problems, no matter who installs it. I was a pro at the installs. Well, I purchase a little place outside of town that I just needed a light weight gate and a gate to open and close to make good neighbors. Not to keep the bad guys out......anyone who wants in your place will have the tools on his truck to come in, sometimes they bring a power tool with them and work at it for a short while..... But point, I purchased a Mighty Mule 350, and a car batt, a solar panel and installed it to a steel fence with nice welded hinges and a 220 lb gate. The system worked as designed and cost me a total of 300 for the unit, 50.00 for a battery, 25.00 for an extra remote, 60.00 for a good solar and that is it. If I want to lock out anyone while I am gone, I use a chain and a Master Lock, I used bolts and burn the edges when I cut them off, just to slow down the BAD GUY, So my point is a opener that has given you 3 yrs of use with very little problem , you should be proud to own this Mighty Mule that is a cheaper design , that was made for the DIY guys............So I have spent under 500.00 for all of the things I need and I feel secure. If you want a better opener that will give you the same service, then you will need to start at about 1,500 and up for the same parts. I charged 2,700 hundred for the basic unit, two remotes with a car battery and a one year warranty on all and people loved the deal, of course that was 10 yrs ago. The same system today is 3,400 with same stuff...........You have gotten your moneis worth I promise...............You will most likey be able get another two or more years out of the Mighty Mule, I am on year two with mine and no issues, I would bet that if your unit fails after two more years that the Mighty Mule company will make you a deal on another one that will last you another five yrs..........good luck and thanks for your review, hope to see you again..........

Eric thanks for the video. I know from researching gate openers like the model you have that they are the minimum equipment. I am aware of all the other equipment needed but the master locks was a good piece of information I didn't have. I have two gates I need to add electric openers to which will give me a lot of work to do.

Thanks for the informative video. I, too, am looking into a gate for my property that can be automatically opened with merely a remote control. This video gave me assurance that there is a DIY kit out there that can be constructed by those with the capabilities and the gumption to forge ahead and do it. I believe that some of the extras can be fabricated on your own without having to purchase the manufacturer's optional components. That's just my opinion. On the upside of your financial expenditures, think of the money you saved yourself by doing it yourself, and not relying on some fly-by-night outfit to charge you that, plus the cost to install it. Also, the money you saved by not having to run hydro a great distance, the trench that would require a machine to dig it, the conduit...etc. Believe me! You came out ahead. Still...well done. Appreciate your efforts in making this. Cheers!

I've had several. I have a heavy duty steel fence around my yard. Lightning strikes of trees would fry my mighty mules. I finally put a 8 ft ground rod in and that ended my problem. I'm about to add a solar panel to mine. The trickle charger would not always keep my battery charged. I was having to run the wire for it about 160 feet.

If it wasn't for the steep hill my drive way sits on I'd have kept doing it by hand, but the e-brakes on my car's sometimes creep back a bit when I park to walk up. I was getting worried that it was only a matter of time before I had a car roll back and cause me serious $$. That's what made me finally upgrade.

12 foot magnetic field - Jumping on it will not open the gate, and that is if you can find the buried sensor. Not sure that a four-wheeler will have enough steel to activate. $159.63 - 50 Ft. Driveway Vehicle Sensor (FM138) for Mighty Mule Automatic Gate Opener The 50 ft. Driveway Vehicle Sensor (FM138) allows a vehicle to drive past the sensor's 12 ft. magnetic field and will open your gate automatically, allowing guests the ability to exit without a Remote (FM135). Works with single and dual gates. Easy DIY (Do It Yourself) installation. Can be installed 3-50 ft. away from the gate.

What were the metal plates you have under the brackets? Did you use the default brackets? I just ordered a MM360 for a 16-ft gate. I have the same sort of gate only about 16ft long and it has chickenwire on the inside to keep people from reaching through (or animals from climbing through). I got the automatic gate lock as well. My kit came with a 5w solar panel, so I hope that will be sufficient. I have wooden posts that are very thick and rounded-- thinking lag bolts might be the way to go on securing, but might need something to shim behind braces?

Nice video. I am going to say everything is lowest cost these days. They save money by most common, lowest common denominator. Like you, I added clickers, solar (from another source - price) but they do provide an 18 V transformer. Its an 'open enough' system with documentation to allow modification and customization. I like it. I had to get 'muffler clamps' to secure one end. I was a little upset that solar requires extra batteries but they are reasonably priced online vs the local 'battery store' that also does bulbs. saw a nice tip about humidity/water control ... I may do that

great bunch of information. Very good to know. How well does this gate lock? And, if opener fails how to do you manage to open it? Im looking to keep out people, will this gate lock up enough to deter them. ( i realize if they want in they will get in) but how strong does it lock up?
@FarpointFarms
@FarpointFarms 5 жыл бұрын
The lock could be broken with a prybar and some time. My best guess is if someone wanted in, they would hook a chain from the gate to a truck and floor it. It would likely destroy the entire system. Then they would drive up the driveway and quickly be eaten by the dogs. For the 99% of those that are looking for an opportunity, they drive by, see the gate and drive on.

It would be pretty tough to steal the entire thing. Its bolted into place, has two locks to prevent removal, and the main unit is screwed to the post. That said, if someone wants it bad enough, they could do it. I guess if that happens, I'll be out of luck.

That I know of, there are none that are available for anywhere near the price of this one. I just want people to be aware that the price they have listed for the "kit" they sell is a bit of a lie. @FarpointFarms 7 жыл бұрын
HillOrStream Yes, we get 12 to 18 inches at time out here in winter. the gate has a adjustment for how much resistance it will push or pull against before it stops. I've got mine set about 1/2way, and it has never gotten hung up, or failed to. operate. I do recommend getting a second battery for use in really cold climates, and of course after you plow it's a good idea to kick any piles out of the path of the gate.

I have a 350, (I believe) and have it on steel posts. I use a solar panel, and if the automotive battery I use gets a bit weak in the winter, I have a cable that I can plug a battery charger into to top it off. It doesn't take long to accomplish, so the solar panel must do a decent job even when we have a few cloudy days. Have had it in service for four years with no issues.

No. No way around the gate. The land to the left of this pic is at about a 70 degree incline up, so no car or truck could sneak around it. To the right its an 80 drop about 12 feet. Again no way to drive around it at all. I used the natural barriers to make this a choke point so that the gate is the only way up. There isn't even enough room to squeak by the gate on foot. It's a shear drop, and the other side is to steep to get e foot hold.

I have had no issues getting in touch with MM tech support, and as a matter of fact, they tend to be very helpful. I have an MM360 as well. I bought a house that already had one and I went ahead and replaced it with another one because it did get damaged, but it was several years old as well...it was actually the 350, which 360 replaced. Anyway, I've called (800)543-1236 and selected the prompt for mighty mule and talked to very knowledgable technicians a few times...that being said I believe the idea is that you would end up working on it yourself or calling some contractor to work on it if you don't want to do it.

Anyone have any input on this issue?: I was going to buy a full Mighty Mule solar two panel heavy duty gate open with intercom but... on Home Depot where anyone and everyone can post a review including bots it has pretty good reviews, but on Costco.com where only those that have a Costco membership can post the reviews are horrid. Nearly everyone there says they can't believe Costco would sell such junk and that Mighty Mule support is the worst. That they have had nothing but problems over and over with the Mighty Mule products. So why the HUGE discrepancy in reviews? The Costco site can't have too many fake reviews like the Home Depot one could, since it is relegated to those with a Costco membership. I don't know what to do now. It's too much work to put one in just to bring it back to Costco because it's too much of a problem and the Mighty Mule support is bad. Check out the reviews for yourself if you like? Anyone have any good input on this?

The way this opener is Programmed makes It VERY EASY to RE-Program to someone else's remote (which can be bought on line for a few dollars) to open the gate whenever they want. NOT locking device on the control Cabinet. And has no Auto reverse to pretend a child or adult from being hurt while it is opening or closing like the Apollo does (which is adjustable to YOUR desires) Weak opening power and WILL give you problems, I Know, I have replace some for the neighbor TWICE. I use Apollo gate openers, more expensive BUT I had one for over 25 yrs and the only thing I replaced was the battery. And, the box is LOCKABLE TOO and is made of Metal not Plastic. As for the "Gate Locking Device",,all you need do is cut the wire and connect to a 12 v battery. NOT GOOD

If you don't read into it before you ordered. You would have found those extra things were not there. You cannot blame the company for giving you the extras that you wanted.

That isn't a security gate, a small hammer will knock the goodies right off. Waiting on that gate is out of the question for anyone who has something to do.

I couldn't disagree more. It stops the passers by, and the thief of opportunity. Any motivated individual is going to get though it, the dogs, and the reinforced doors if they are determined to do so. 90% of thefts are "Crimes of opportunity" and a gate like this is there to work with those 90% of crimes. Truth is I have nothing worth dying for and anyone found on the wrong side of it is catching a 9mm to the face ASAP. I work from home so again this is just one layer in a layered defense system that includes cameras, dogs, lots of locks, and a angry vet with a gun.

For the amount of money that you invested in this gate system that would be the shabbiest gate install, I have ever seen. First, the hinge post should have been a steel post 4/5 inches square and you would have no need for that crap bracing you installed just to support the post.

Bla bla, You are smart, I am stupid. Feel better? Willy, That gate was here when I moved here, and it will be here when I die. It worked when I moved here, It works now, and it will work fine when I die. Never mistake someone else's way of doing things as wrong since you would have done it different. You'd likely miss an important chance of seeing how to do it better. As a mechanic with 30 years experience. The guys that are sure they know it all always make a lot less than the guys willing to try something new.

@@FarpointFarms Bla bla yourself you carried on. on how much you invested in this gate system and can't handle a bit of criticism. And what in the bloody hell has having 30 years as a mechanic go to do with this gate closer system..And I never said you installed the gate I just said that the hinge post should have been a steel post.And it is the shabbiest gate install that I have ever seen. Cut back on the kool-aid and get over it.

I would just run electrical service out to it. The solar and batteries seems like a major weak point.

the driveway is just too long for that. Solar is our best option to power it

@@FarpointFarms I guess it’s all relative… My uncle ran 200 AMP power 2 miles out to a hay barn. Also, rewatching the video I hear you say $500 is a sizable investment for the opener; so I guess a few thousand feet of wire is probably not in your budget…

I had one installed not even a year ago. It's just now started beeping and us sagging. I am not a very handy person, so this is disheartening, and I can't use the gate the way I wanted to.

Could you send them to me? I've had mine for 4 1/2 years now and other than the main control board frying at 16 months (under Warranty) It's been very reliable. I keep hearing how much they suck, but I guess mine is the exception.
