Another thing to consider is that a laser through a vacuum travels significantly faster than light through glass. Fiber is very fast, but it has a latency that you can't overcome due to physics. Technically, every time the light transitions in a fiber, it slows down. Transitions being a bounce off the interior surface walls of the fiber. Refraction and reflections have to wavefront interact with the electric field of the atoms making of the walls. That's a slow process relatively speaking.
