You know, I've been drawing on-and-off for my whole life, but shading has always been something I couldn't figure out. Not for lack of trying, mind; and I would occasionally get shading that looked good on accident. I just could never get it to come together on a level where I really understand how to think about it and put it onto paper. But this video finally made it click! Thank you so much!

I didn't think I'd learn much from this subject but, I really did find it interesting and useful. I like how you talked about "learning to flick" & also, softening any harsh shadow with the lighter color.

Hey Zoe. Can you maybe film a sketchbook tutorial?
@zoehongteaches6 жыл бұрын
What specifically do you hope to learn?
@fangedorgasm35086 жыл бұрын
Hey Zoe. I am a first year fashion design student who always watches your videos. Where I go to school, we are encouraged to stylise our fashion figures tremendously - they usually have quite an abstract outcome. Could you maybe talk about stylising illustrations and what that means in the industry, as I have seen your figures are beautifully proportional and sometimes I wonder about how that could be the most practical way of illustrating the clothing apposed to more 'fantasy world'-type figures. I'd really love your opinion and advice on this one!
@zoehongteaches6 жыл бұрын
My figures are not that realistic. I most often use a 10 head figure and the average person is about 8 heads, models are in the 9 head range. But I agree that anatomically my figures aren't that stylized. I definitely illustrate with the clothing design as the focus, which is a vein I call "design communication" and I'm a huge supporter of this style for designers. There are styles of illustration that can be stylized and still communicate the design. Some designers sketch figures more to capture a mood, show off the inspiration and vibe of the collection and let their flats show the design details. Some schools push stylization in an effort to get their students to explore style and find their own illustrative signature. There is rarely a one-method-fits-all answer, especially in visually creative fields.

Thank you for this thought-provoking reply. I battle to put into words the respect and admiration I have for your skill and teaching! I'll have to chew on that information for a bit and see how it I could translate it to my own development in workflow - so until next time! x

Thank you! Many artists and designers struggle with finding a balance between what they are taught and what feels right for them, but that struggle is often beneficial in the end. Good luck!

This was a beautifully informative video. I have so much trouble with shadows. Thanks so much. Question, typically how long should it take do do a full fashion illustration, drawing and fully rendering the clothes, skin tone and hair?
@zoehongteaches6 жыл бұрын
It totally depends on a million things: how big the sketch is, how elaborate the clothes are (lace? beading? patterns?), what kind of hair, makeup, what medium, if they have tattoos, if you're doing a tight rendering or not...

As always amazing video! Also, I have one unrelated question. Is it considered unprofessional to use colour pencils to colour everything in? Given, ofc, that it's done professionally and with great attention to details.
@DulceBarrera6 жыл бұрын
Most of my portfolio for college was color pencil. There is a lot of ways you can make color pencil not look like color pencil if that makes sense. Rubbing alcohol, babyoil or a white pencil but keep in mid that it is a lot longer to color in.
@Coopella76 жыл бұрын
Dulce Barrera yeah, I agree that those drawings can look amazing, but still wanted to double ckeck. I used to draw everything on my drawing tablet but m laptop broke recently and honestly, I just can't make myself start using "messy" mediums again, the amount of preparation and then cleaning afterwards is just too annoying for me. Thanks for the reply btw
@zoehongteaches6 жыл бұрын
Colored pencils can look great, they're just slow. If you're an illustrator, you can work in any medium you want, just make it look good. When you're a designer, you don't have all that time to waste on colored pencil because a sketch is not your end product. The end product is the garment. The sketch is just one step in the process so you don't have time for all that tedious blending. Even watercolor, which is faster, is too slow for design process. Watercolor is something used purely if someone requests a proper presentation.
