Yes, and as a plus-size myself, I can say that it does not feel like: "Oh, I must be inclusive, so here... insert random picture" -but actually, it is seems to be very mindful of a thoughtful and focused on a broad representation.

“the best way to tell your real style is what you loved as a kid” SO TRUE. to this day i find myself quickly getting over trends & colors of the moment just to gravitate back towards the frilly&dark&ultralayered looks that fascinated me in 80s movies as a kid (which i was never allowed to wear 💀… my mom was anti-goth). i also feel like i gravitate towards these things a remnant of my childhood love of fantasy… at last, with adult money, i can dress like im going on a QUEST

Yess came here to comment this! I've used this method to decide whether or not I should buy something for years, if you liked it then and still do its unlikely you'll change your mind about it. I've always loved the alt girlies in movies as a kid, I remember being so young and so excited to be allowed to wear pocket chains and massive cargos or dress like a witch and to this day I'm hopelessly torn between mall goth and whimsigoth but thats the beauty of personal style-i can be both!

My mom used to wear a big pashmina drapped over her shoulders over top of her winter dress coat. The coat was deep navy and the scarf was full of virbrant jewel tones and had a tassle edge. It was so fabulous. It can be hard to dress up our outerwear in really cold climates but thats definitely one way.

Interested in what you have to say about personal style and trends! And I've always been into preppy/collegiate style but I also never liked the formality and stiffness of it, so a colourful take is very welcome. I've been obsessed with crocheting jumpers and vests (specifically green and blue ones) so it'd fit right into that haha
@megansimonson Жыл бұрын
I love what you said about collegiate style!! I have always loathed preppy style but you somehow showed and described a version I can totally get behind! I have been finding sooo many stinking cute long plaid skirts in the most gorgeous colourways at the thrift store/markets, but alas they've all been way way too small. :')

Ooh, I did get all excited when I saw plaid skirts on the trend lists, just since I've got two waiting in the wings for their moment to shine. I don't know about the strap thing being a trend either, but we're certainly on the same wavelength- I actually replaced two of my bag straps for older bags I don't wear with with heftier ones last month. Playing around with scarves also seems like it'd be a lot of fun, so hoping I see lots of good inspo this year!

Plaid is everything!! And asymmetry is so much fun! Yeah, the childhood things still ring true. Some of my favourite clothing items were a frilly navy sailor dress and a light yellow princess dress. As an adult my favourite colour is pastel yellow and I really love sailor collars and hems, frills and tulle skirts.. Also I can see the influence of my favourite childhood tv show (The Winx Club) in how many pairs of over the knee socks I own and have owned. Not to mention how the whole arm and leg warmer trend of recent years made me dig up all my old ones from my childhood and teen years. Not that they were too deep down, because it's cold here and I also dance. And then I realised my mum has been crazy in love with leg warmers her whole life as well, we have soooooo many of them :DD

The saying that all trends eventually come back around is very true. Many of the “new” styles, colors, trends are re-runs with a twist: being seen through the eyes of the latest generation. I have many of the styles in this video from the last go round, and had kept them because they were “me” (still are). I think the key to keeping “old” fashion items fresh is the willingness to add, subtract or modify within whatever is current. Also as you have stated, being honest with yourself if it’s something you truly like and will wear more than a season or just that you’ve been overexposed to it in social media.

I love how the trends here have so much overlap and can be combined so intuitively! They seem to build off each other in a sense I rarely get from other trend lists, bravo! Also this past weekend I made a massive scarf/shawl thing out of a thrifted wool throw blanket with big orange flowers on it and I'm obsessed with it! It had tons of pilling, but I brushed out the texture with a clothes brush, making the wool super soft and fluffy! And it's cut on the corner so it looks like a shawl with the triangle of the corner in the back or on the side, but then it wraps, ties, and styles like a big fuzzy scarf. I feel like it hits this perfect sweet spot of wearable, practical, cozy, yet also trendy, statement-y and pretty!

Wait yes please!! A video about the intersection of personal style and trends! 'Personal style' is soooo influenced by what is popular, whether intended or not. Anyone with interesting personal style in a certain era still looked like they were in that era. David Bowie, grace jones, Cyndi Lauper, Joan Jett are good 80s examples. Not shortage of others in other eras too. Any other examples you all can think of? @beepworld, maybe we need a fashion history vid!? It's also reliant on what you have access to - Obvi cost and availability but also region (fashion trends vary across the globe and the next block over) - If you're buying new, you're limited to buying basically only what's "trendy" (unless you shop individual creators) - If you buy secondhand, you have slightly more selection because you can shop the trends of the last *several* decades. Even secondhand is getting harder because clothing has declined in quality so much. Less and less of the previous decade's trends even make it to the thrift store. The high volume of newer, cheaply made items crowd the store and it's getting rarer to find higher quality pieces. Let's trade instead!

I’d be super interested in a video on trends vs personal style. I’ve always thought of trends as primarily the province of the young (not in a derogatory way, more like a life phase way?). I don’t buy clothes very often, but I also know that as I get older I wear the clothes I own differently because I’m feeling it’s more and more important to look “put together.” Would be super interested to hear your thoughts!

Love your style and your focus on second-hand clothing and rewearing our already-owned clothes! I personally like it when trends are more about a vibe (ex- collegiate) than specific items. While I don't have a long plaid skirt, I do have a red plaid mini skirt (the most basic of red tartans) and I've always struggled to wear it because I'm afraid I will be read as "sexy schoolgirl" rather than "alt-fashion girlie" :| I'll try to lean into the preppy and see how it goes!
@abigailw4599 Жыл бұрын
I'm an alt fashion girlie and plaid skirts are my favorite! If that's what you're going for it's as easy as throwing on a graphic/band tee! For fall I love sweaters/long sleeves with a plaid skirt & graphic over the sweater, keeps the sweater+plaid skirt from feeling too preppy. Accessories also go a long way, big chunky boots, lots of layered silver jewelry, fun punky hairstyles etc

I’m a little late to commenting on this video but I think it’s so funny that you mention being subtly influenced and participating in trends without knowing. About a year ago, I realized instagram and tik tok were making me really depressed and so I deleted them. I was also excited to see how my sense of personal style could evolve without consuming so much fashion and trend related content! And I’ve been having so much fun with it and feeling really able to flex my own creativity. But then I watched this video and pretty much every single trend you listed (blokecore, giant scarves, collegiate vibes) are EXACTLY what I’ve been wearing it literally flabbergasted me. I guess even without directly consuming trend content I’m still being influenced 😅 or maybe we just have similar fashion sense! Anyway, love the vid and happy to keep following along!

I can see why sportswear wouldn't buzz you as being associated with "classy" but for me it definitely does-- it's what the yalee wears where he's drinking brewskis with the other future supreme court justices. Also college sports are a big part of how elite institutions favor the ultrawealthy for college admission. Weird right? Aside from football and basketball, sports recruits at elite schools are substantially wealthier on average than other admitted students. So I feel like it's still sort of a class signifier. That said... ugh it still hits a cord with me, it's still so fun looking.
