YES! I thought I would never give up my skinny jeans (gen z) but then 90s straight jeans came into style at like A&F & Hollister. I took a quiz to see what jeans would fit my body type the best & it was straight leg jeans and ever since then, I’ve never looked back! I love how straight leg jeans & just comfy clothes in general are the new “trend.”

the sheer clothing trend infuriates me for 2 reasons! the first being that it's clearly just been made up by fast fashion brands as a ploy to sell thinner/cheaper fabric for less. and the second is that, as a woman in a city, I feel SO unsafe in revealing clothes. I would NEVER go out like that, especially not by myself. not that I'm victim blaming, obviously, but it just feels like a trend that's a big walking magnet for creeps. I really don't think that even the influencers who wear this actually wear it. I think they throw it on for pics and then cover up after, or they only go to very specific places in those outfits. you'd be hard pressed to find a woman wearing something like that on the nyc subway!
@Lily-ig1rt5 ай бұрын
i meant to say for they're selling for MORE, not less when talking about fast fashion brands btw
@zaynab70135 ай бұрын
Yep. And also, it’s one of those things where you think, is it fashion or is she skinny? Not always but mostly. And what kind of occasions is it appropriate to wear something like that to? Definitely not work or your average grocery shop or daily walk or whatever. So it’s not super practical or something you’ll get a lot of use out of unless you’re layering etc
@alisonodette5 ай бұрын
i think you hit the nail in the head with this one, i totally see it as being a marketing ploy made by brands to sell cheaper clothing at higher prices, they probably paid a few influencers and celebrities to start wearing it hence why it started trending. And yes, super unconventional to wear as a normal person outside of pinterest!

I think the biggest problem with trends is how they make everyone want to be the same, when in reality we all have different colors/bodies/faces. Since discovering color analysis, kibbe body types, and essences, I see why different things work for different people. I don't think it's a matter of things being in style or not but whether they suit you or not.

Fashion and style is meant to change over time as the way we express ourselves change. Its not about regretting, its about LIVING. Times, style, expressions change. No regrets ever. It is important to stay TRUE to ourselves and what we gravitate to, even if that means the outfit is horrendous. Why do we need to be timeless? when you're young, be free, wild and adventurous (not a copycat!). I'm so glad I was.
@alisonodette5 ай бұрын
This is such a good way to look at it!
@m.n.d59495 ай бұрын
I find it ironic that you find wearing every trend that passes by like a revolving door to be authentic as opposed to personal style that dosent change like flipping the remote on the tv station. Also to give perspective, a person bought 8 pieces of clothing a year in the 80s and now its close to 88 pieces of clothing. Style is an extention of someones personality and essense and if its constantly changing like dressing a mannequin at a retail store every 3 months as the trend switches its hardly personal style. Picking and choosing only the ones that reflect ones personal style from the constant barrage of trends and microtrends are what would be in keeping with that statement but its the opposite of personality in my opinion to just keep wearing whatever the new trend rolls in. Its like one does not have any personality and just dresses up like a manmequin for views and to advertise the garment as opposed to the garment being an extention of ones personality.
@chany1124 ай бұрын
most of us don't have the feasibility to afford clothes - especially in bulk, to follow this trend, that trend - when the trend cycle changes so quickly. therefore, many of us want timeless options because at the end of the day we're just working paycheck to paycheck, and there are some days where we want to dress up and look nice. it's more of a functionalism perspective whereas yours is individualistic but perhaps caters to a younger audience who has less worries about finances and getting a roof over your head + bills to take care of.
@sydney68183 ай бұрын
@@m.n.d5949no where did that person say that everyone who participated in microtrends trends are authentic? stop nit picking. no clue how you read this person simply say that fashion should be less about regretting and more about being fun and free and made it about consumerism???? when they didn’t mention it at all? you can hate how greedy and consuming focused fashion is becoming without being insulting. they said in their own words that fashion is about what you as an individual GRAVITATE to, not that you should wear every micro trend that comes out. reading comprehension is fundamental.
@m.n.d59493 ай бұрын
@@sydney6818 when fashion is " fun and free" it is implied that experimenting involves purchasing more and more and more to " find your supposed style and keep experimenting as the trends change". That is not aurhentic nor free. Its only wasteful and feeding insecurity. Every other generation before this one seems to have their organic sense of style without needing to keep changing their wardrobe every 6 months . People on public platforms as influencers need to assume a higher degree of responsibility for implied ideas too. As its what encouraged people toward this in the first place.

some of these trends are for sure eyesores, but i’m glad it gives us the opportunity to explore different styles, test boundaries, and see what works. example, i think the fitted bottoms plus ballet flats combo looks gorgeous on girls with long, slim legs. whereas i would literally look stubby wearing that🤣 i love wearing baggy pants (though not so baggy that it’s saggy yk), flowy midi skirts, with platforms or blocky heels. it’s timeless for *me* because that’s what works for my silhouette
@chany1124 ай бұрын
unfortunately, many of the pinterest trends (i see it reverting back to the 2010s ED tumblr girl aesthetic which is quite problematic ngl) are catered towards tall, skinny girls with long and slim legs. wearing clothes and making it look good on you, to me, is 70% proportions, 10% confidence, and 20% styling/accessorising and these factors come into play especially when humans have such a variety of body types, shapes, sizes, faces, etc. throughout history, size 0 has always been favoured and though there's a push towards self-confidence, self-love, body positivity, the fashion industry will always do what's best and has worked time and time again.

If I do I think about if it would actually work with other things I own. If so I debate on putting it in my cart. The only time I don’t debate is if it’s vintage 60-70s that fits perfectly. I see so many of those sheer/mesh clothes in stores, especially long dresses and I’m always wondering where to wear them to. The only place I can see them being used without looking off is at the beach as a cover up but that’s it. So it makes sense to sell them in a city like mine because I live at the coast, but not anywhere else like Madrid or London. And again it makes me think if it even works for people who aren’t super skinny because they’re usually bodycon dresses (which look good on very few people imo), especially if they show your entire body when wearing a tiny bikini. I wish they would stop selling those types of clothes or at least reduce the amount of them because it’s really hard now to find clothes that aren’t super sheer and revealing or way too long if you aren’t tall. It really is a huge struggle for me as a shorter girl who isn’t skinny

yeah the bows were cute at frst and sometimes still are but some people get overzealous with it and use way too many bows. i think just one or two is enough

I’m a 14 year old teenager who’s like almost everyone else now in my age very often in the internet like on TikTok, insta etc. I discovered my personal style like 1-2 years ago and I feel like it’s gonna stay. I don’t have a specific aesthetic but I like the downtown and dark academia style very much and I’ve been liking it for pretty long. But the know I’m in my teenage years where pretty much everything changes in these years like style, music taste, character etc. but I hope my style won’t change very much in the next years because my parents aren’t willing to spend that much money😅

Well, I'm 19 and let me tell you, most people do change styles drastically. When I was 14 (why do I feel old, lol) but anyway, my hobbies, interests, personality and style were completely different. Since then I've changed like a million times with some basic things staying unchanged, but yeah. Enjoy what you have, I guess))
@alisonodette5 ай бұрын
well I think it depends! there’s for sure a few things i wore at 14 that I still like! I was 14 in 2014 so the whole 2014 tumblr aesthetic is still lowkey my vibe, music & style wise. Maybe you will too! 💗

I agree with the bows, not bows in general of course those are timeless, but the way they're used in trends, like those sweaters that have ribbon bows tied to the sides, it just looks bad imho
@Bellabirdtheoneandonly4 ай бұрын
I agree with everything except the bows (they have become part of my style). Anyways, I loved fashion between 2021-2022, because I feel like we were wearing things that were more timeless and beautiful (blazers, pleated skirts, beautiful dresses, etc), but now we're wearing things that are highkey ugly (In my opinion at least, boxer shorts, jorts, capris, dressses over pants). Its like we're trying to be ugly and over the top because we see things like thongs and lowrise jeans on very hot people...pretty much proving that fashion is about how the person looks...not the clothes

yeah fashion this years has been interesting… to say the least, i’m excited to see where it goes next year!

i’m a younger millennial so i feel like i’m finally old enough now to experience all of the things that were trendy in my youth/adolescence cycling back around for the first time…. which can be fun if it’s a style that you loved and missed wearing! like i’m really excited for the inevitable 2010’s revival bc my favorite styles from that era will actually be available in stores again lol. but with some of it i’m just like ohhhhhh brother not this again 🥴

I think need to be mindful that fashion is supposed to be INDIVIDUAL. We all look the same or are going for the same aesthetic which is why it’s so easy to be cycled through. 2000s & 2010s fashion was “cringe” to some but it had a lot more creativity & individuality compared to ANYTHING we have currently. Once we bring back REAL fashion consisting of creativity & individuality, we will see all these “trends” die.

So true, I blame tiktok for this!! I have a video coming out on sunday talking about how tiktok has kind of ruined the trend cycle

i HATE the thongs out trend with passion, but overall i love a lot of these trends😂 maybe bc i just started to be brave enough to express myself through clothes but i love some of these trends that look lowkey hideous like skirts over jeans (although i only like it when it's done well), baggy jorts and there's this specific shoe i've been seiing where it's kinda a cross between ballet shoes and sports shoes idk how to describe it. i'm over bows by now, but i love pearl bows!!! (especially silver ones)

i also love jerseys, everything silver, baggy on baggy, stars everywhere, bag charms

I think the bows are gonna stay. not like they are now everywhere totally out of control), but just as the regular accessorie that has been around for centuries - a bow in the hair, a lil one in a dress just cute
@alisonodette3 ай бұрын
Totally! I think the -timeless- version of it will stay, but slapping them on everything is def going to pass

Honestly criticism is also what makes the world advance, you're being very measured and balanced in your critiques, if people feel personally attacked by your opinions it's their problem, not yours ❤

I don't follow trends, so I was pretty surprised at what things have been popular. To put it nicely, these trends are all...interesting. 😅 People can wear whatever they want and I don't care, but personally I will not be wearing these. Even though I say that, I do enjoy seeing what creative outfits people come up with even if they are not my cup of tea.

While everything you mentioned is valid, I would like to remind everyone that fashion IS supposed to be fun and experimental. Saying “why did wear this” is totally normal. Like am i gonna wear a mini skirt over my pants today? Hell no. Did i wear a mini skirt over my pants during the 2000s and thought i was the sh*t, ABSOLUTELY!. Dont let trends going out of style stop you from having fun and experimenting ❤

I love baggy jeans and bows. I know they may go out of style but they are just so adorable! I agree with everything else ESPECIALLY skinny jeans. Kinda going on a mini rant but in sixth grade all I would wear was skinny jeans. Not to mention fake jean material (j-gings.). Looking back at it now it just makes me so uncomfortable. I like baggy jeans bc they don’t show my ankles.

you mentioned teenagers keeping up with the trends, and honestly, the majority of high schoolers dont try on their outfits and just wear pajama pants, sweatshirts/pants, or leggings. personally, im very much a skirt girly, and id say the cargo skirt is one of the more trendy pieces i have. its a charcoal gray, and matches everything. as for jeans, i wear the classic jean shorts (i personally think jorts are hideous but some people pull them off), and flare/boot cut jeans are all i wear. idek if low rise is trending but thats what looks better on my body. ive honestly just developed my own style, sure i own parachute pants and love them, but i have so many timeless pieces and honestly love my style. basically everyone out of hs hates the way they dressed then, so for now im just gonna wear what makes me look and feel good and just regret it down the line. i feel like the people who dont try on clothes at all will regret it more then me, though.

i think it might change depending on the culture! i was in high school 2016-2019 and i loveeed skinny jeans so much! trends were a little slower because tiktok hadn’t taken off just yet! I used to wear so much high waisted too but now I realized low waist is what looks best on me as well! I loved that you’ve found your style at such a young age! I do regret some stuff I wore in hs but i had so much fun exploring with my style I don’t regret it at all.

As technically an “Xennial” a lot of these trends were when I was in highschool in the late 90’s and I just can’t bring myself to do it 😂 especially “jorts” or the thong outside of the pants. Honestly that only happened in the very early 2000’s because the darn pants were so low cut that you couldn’t move without exposing your undies!! lol 😂 And don’t get me started on the huge pants. My Jncos were so torn and destroyed at the bottom from walking on them that the hems literally dragged behind me like tails 😂
