I am from an Eastern European country and I have lived in both the capital and my hometown this year. In addition to your points, I will say that oversized hooded jackets + baggy jeans are definitely a thing for teenagers, I literally haven't seen a single teen group without it since 2022. For them, it's still everyday wear, although we don't see it online that often. but I think it has peaked this year, so in 2025 we will see much less oversized clothes among them. Meanwhile, the clean girl aesthetic is very common in the young adult age group (honestly, I see it everywhere and I am I'm exhausted to see it, even if it has only been going on for a year, this trend has tired me out, though I have not really followed it. especially this “Hailey Bieber” hairstyle, just ugh). But for those who do not follow the trend, I think there are just basic casual and classic clothes, a little inspired by the old money office sirens this year, due to my observations.

Oh wow it’s really interesting how much was different or was shared between alt vs. non-alt fashion, i’ve never heard of half of these things but you also never mentioned much of alt staples either. Guess that’s algorithms for ya, now i wonder what big trends i’m missing right now. Seeing cowboy boots being an early/outdated trend shocked me, since theyve only cropped up relatively recently for alts. Also cargo pants being 2022 instead of 2020 like it was for alt. Hell, cargo pants have just been IMMORTAL for me, i’ve never seen them die down ha

I was thinking the exact same thing, like certain trends to me were put in the wrong year like with the cowboy boots and bows and even most 2024 trends but that's possibly because they became more mainstream later or earlier cuz honestly the alt trend cycles move slower in my experience but I totally agree with u

Idk if this is just me , but it's really only now everyone has been dressing baggy.Back in 2020-2023 most of my classmates were still in their skinny jeans. I've heard that baggy jeans were trending back in 2020 but I barely saw it until now. When I went back to school tho this year I was shocked . The fashion itself it so different from last year too. Baggy jeans , bows, new balance shoes . For some reason everyone now dresses the same too. I had no idea this was coming .

i live in northern spain and yeah, most people are wearing trendy stuff, like baggy jeans or maxi skirts, but styled wayyyy differently from what you’d see on pinterest! you can see more alternative/less basic?? people wearing more pinterest trends, and anime girlies sometimes wear itabags or charms on their totebags, but it’s not something you’d see the average “basic” girl wearing :P also bimba y lola is popular among some girls and older women, but it isn’t the most trendy brand for young people i think ..

I like in the southeast parts of the US and people here dress like it's the 2010s. A hoodie/tee and jeans/shorts/sweatpants or leggings and sometimes a skirt or a dress. People here are obsessed with hoodies. My high school was literally sweatpants and a hoodie usually black or grey and then on fridays like it's was where I could predict what they'll wear anway every Friday they wore ble jeans instead of sweats/pajama pants. And if you a white boy you got your shorts no matter what

I believe the jewelry thing might be because daintier pieces were trending in the 2010s, and the difference is so big to the trend now that it would require buying a new collection. However, mixing gold and silver doesn't really require you to buy anything, just styling pieces you already own (which is rare in trends, and I love it). Also, the Veja shoes, I GET YOU!!! Here in São Paulo, Brazil, they are everywhere, seems like they popped out of nowhere really hahaha But regarding your observations, I agree with everything

It’s interesting to see fashion from the perspective of different generations as I am guessing you’re closer to my younger niece’s age (im 40 but this picture of me is ancient from when I was 27, my niece is 18). It’s interesting to see things that do trend and how they relate to the last adjacent fashion trend that related to it before that and how the context of it has changed in how it’s paired and accessorized. It’s also of it how one extreme flops to the other. It’s weird to me how nowadays all the trends are extremely sped up and impulsive even but that’s what happens in this particular tiktok dropship economy. I’m seeing a lot of Y2K trends that a lot of people may not realize were actually Y2K like the faux fur coats (~1998-2000) and shiny textures (~1999 for pleather and ~2005 for sequins) and textured fabrics and animal prints (~1998-1999), but the wine/burgundy shades that a lot of people are wearing now and the long wool trench coats were more commonly seen in the mid-90’s. The lighter hair in the front that you reference from 2020 is a callback to an old late 90’s trend. Of the time that has gone on, I try to be more sustainable with things I get by thinking about the longevity and maintenance of said item, not just “will this be out in next year” but “how will this piece hold up.” And from the last time I can tell you, faux fur looks like crap and gets 100,000 pieces of stuff stuck in it not too long after (much like the polyester shag rug that my younger sis put in her room in 2003 that my late dog ran into her room, laid down and immediately claimed it as her own and it got dirty). And while some sequin things are made better now, anything with loose floppy pailette (sp?) style sequins goes to hell in a hurry once you get a snag on a thread and spring a leak of sequins falling off. I once located one of my choir mates in college on campus in 2006 by following the trail of large fallen black sequins that had fallen off her slouchy purse. You don’t want to know the gutteral laugh that left my face when the skirts over pants thing came up. This too is very Y2K sourced. Except the way I saw it being fashioned was a dress over low rise jeans (especially the thicker velvet dresses with a ruffle trim). I think this happened when the boho chick 2003 thing was happening. I think Britney was an originator of this trend when Crossroads came out in 2002 (?), and other celebs like Ashley Tisdale also did it. In fact, arguably all roads in Y2K fashion go right back to Britney. Just about every single time. And that dress/skirt over jeans was styled with that awful woven/braided tan or khaki colored fish net looking belt tied over it that fell apart after 5 wears. Or a studded belt. Now that I’m at the age of not giving much a crap there are some hills I will die on. Like they can pry my cargo pants from my cold dead fingers because skinny jeans from the 2010’s did absolutely nothing for me (especially higher waisted stuff too) and I love pockets entirely too much. And I don’t get the point to an beige old money aesthetic since it just feels like the misnomer of the so-called “effortless parisan woman” aesthetic that’s basically just a bunch of privilege and meticulous routines masquerading as being effortless. I do love the gen z draw to maximalism, which is rooted in late 90’s Japan as to origin (I forget the original name of the town and trend it comes from, but I saw a really interesting video on the origins of it and an interesting theory as to why it’s back). That’s really fun. I don’t fit the same size that I did back then when Y2K rolled around the first time obviously so recently a couple of years ago whatever I had left over in a giveaway box from finally cleaning out my closet after a while went to my younger niece which she gleefully gathered many items of and then she sent some other ones on to her friend. I hope my old clothes find new life with other people.

omg i just read all of this and i love how you can date every trend back to the actual year it was first worn, i fear that will be me in the future as well, i do remember my mom mentioning animal prints being big in the 90s, and i can remember some of the real y2k but not that much because i was a child. I loved reading this comment and learning more about when they actually originated, I think it’s a cycle, we live & we learn, and I’ll be you in a couple of years reminiscing about this trends when they come back around and i see them on kids. 💗
@annajohnson5779
@annajohnson5779 14 күн бұрын
@ oh yeah, animal prints were huge in the late 90’s and early aughts Y2K. IMO Leopard print kinda hit first in the late 90’s and then it shifted to other animal prints like zebra print around 2000/2001. For a showcase of late 90’s leopard print, look no further than the outfit that Shania Twain wears in her music video for “Man, I feel like a woman.” I was thinking about that when the “leopard print shirt/outfit that won’t go away” popped up- or was it her song “that don’t impress me much?” It was one of those two songs. And some celebs really gravitated to animal print in particular like Pamela Anderson, as well as AJ McLean from the Backstreet Boys. The zebra print that hit a little later- I actually had a black and blue zebra striped button-down glittery shirt when I was 16- I often paired it with glittery flare dress pants. It was also common for the playboy bunny loving girls to wear a lot of zebra print in 2001 but I never got in on that bedazzling rhinestone and/or tan tattoo whole thing. Come to think of it, the patchwork micro trend you were talking about could also be Y2K as well. It has a different manifestation now though. I think Nsync really took to that trend a lot in 2000, even though Brian Littrell from BSB had a ridiculous pair of patchwork pants that he wore to the billboard awards in 2000 (?). I remember the fanbase talking about it back then on AOL chat rooms and while I liked his crazy patchwork pants a lot of fans… absolutely panned them. I think a lot of celebs like Beyoncé and Mary j blige also did the trend but paired it with double denim.
@annajohnson5779
@annajohnson5779 14 күн бұрын
@ everything is a cycle too. I remember when I was 14 how much mom was talking about how 90’s fashion (flare pants, peasant tops in particular, etc) were definitely ripping off her “beloved” 70’s fashion of her teen years and that nothing is actually new. I think it was Nicole Rudolph? That had a video or more going down the rabbit hole as to the origins of different fashions over the decades. I think the bright colors and checkerboard stuff from 2020 i believe harkens back to the 1970’s and perhaps even the late 1960’s and before that I believe that it was a play on the bahaus school of art from the 1930’s, but I obviously wasn’t alive yet, and the one person I know who was alive in the 1930’s (my almost 95yo grandma)’s family lived in small towns and was going through massive hardships at the time (Great Depression + Dust Bowl) too much to know or relay info about a progressive art movement from Europe. A lot of 70’s stuff I believe also takes from 1920’s fashion stuff as well. I was looking through a “new clothes this season” section on a store some time in the last year, and no lie, a silver crop top popped up and I turned to my husband (the same age as I) and I was like “wait, what year is it again?” Because there were a bunch of silver satin blouses and there was the silver version of the green club pleather crop top that Britney wears in the “You drive me crazy” music video from 1999. I’m loving all the metallic and textured stuff making a comeback too. I wish I still had it to pass off to someone but I had a bright silver blouse my freshman year of high school and was wearing it in my yearbook pic from that year. A lot of the very metallic stuff I remember TLC and Aaliyah in particular doing a lot of that kind of fashion back in the day. I also enjoyed seeing the comeback of the asymmetrical hem stuff as well (whether it be shark bite, hankie hem, diagonal hem, etc). That part of Y2K (which showed up around 2000 and was especially very popular after the show Lost in 2002) did a lot of favors for short people like me. The hankie hem bandana halter tops I remember were banned at my school (we didn’t have a dress code) but that didn’t stop people from getting in trouble wearing those shirts under their hoodies. I also loved the comeback of the long slitted skirt as well, but I have my reservations about the quality of build on a lot of fast fashion modern mesh pieces in comparison to their more well made earlier counterparts. But overwhelmingly I can’t wait to see the next generational take and remix on stuff I once wore and also saw others wearing.
