What's the point of having nuclear weapons anymore? If Britain carries "we fire second" policy then it's just useless killing. We'll all be dead if any country fires a nuclear warhead so instead of pondering what kind of state of the art mass killing weapons we should conjure up, instead the billions of pounds can be spent something like... I don't know rebuilding the economy after leaving the eu and etc. Nuclear deterrents are pointless ideas concocted by paranoid-driven men
@mally12368 жыл бұрын
+Azureecosse That's it though isn't it The fact we could fire back and if doing so is after our islands are wiped out we make sure so are they That's why it's a defence because anyone who fired on us their victory would be short lived So it would be stupid for them to fire in first place which is the point really

Has that "peace camp" occupant never heard of Mutually Assured Destruction? The reasoning behind maintaining nukes is that other countries are unwilling to use their own. Nukes were only dropped when America was the sole owner of them.

A far cry from when i served there, there was only M H.M.S. Maidstone there and some standard and very unsusual subs plus the first nuclear sub. I served with a special diving team and we had a navy M.F.V. kitted out to live on M.F.V. 1066 it was a very unsual lifestle compared to normal servive as i was the only engineer on the boat, however i did enjoy my time on this boat andvthe good crew we had, it really was a far call from what the base is now, but we did have our share of anti nuclear groups, mainly on weekends, it was a very out of the way place, the nearest town was Helensburg and we had quite a trip to take leave.

Brendan O’hara is so blind and removed from Argyll it’s unbelievable, has he just forgotten about the campaign of the Residents of Argyll to get more subs in the county? He wants the base to close but has no alternative for the 25, 000 jobs that would be affected making our already poor county even more poor.

The warheads are not kept at Faslane. Very rarely do any of the 4 Vanguards enter Faslane 'fully loaded'. The warheads are kept around the corner at Coulport. Everyone knows that, I'm not letting out any national secrets.

Not forever, the Rolls-Royce PWR 2 pressurised water reactor allows the Vanguard-class submarines to circumnavigate (sail all the way around) the Earth 40 times, without refuelling. The first built has been in service since 1993.

Considering what's going on in the world, it is safe to say that the UK's defense spending has proved to be as insufficient as its nuclear deterrent. Four nuclear submarines and one operational at any given time. That's all. The new government should seriously consider doubling the size of the nuclear submarine force and establish a true nuclear triad, with land-based missiles, and nuclear-capable aircraft. As a foreign observer, fascinated by all things military, I am convinced that if these capabilities existed, Putin wouldn't be making unacceptable and brutal threats against the United Kingdom.

Anti-trident activists and Corbyn would happily cede the UK's nuclear weapons to North Korea and Iran as they demand unilateral nuclear disarmament.The UK MUST MAINTAIN its nuclear deterrence. Nuclear weapons are a vital part of the UK's security and defence. They are the nation's ultimate deterrence against any aggression. They also allow the UK to pursue its own foreign policy without always having to depend on the US.

These look like decrepit subs in sore need of replacement. There size is confusing in that they are so small. From a defensive point of view most of Russia west of the Urals is within range of the Scottish bases. That is, the subs do not have to leave port to fire at Russian targets. Is it a first strike target of the Russians? Don't know.

The clip shows the wrong submarines during the video. Every picture but 1 is of an Astute class boat which is 50 metres shorter than the Vanguard class boat which carries the deterrent the V boats are huge 150 metres in length and weigh 15,000 tons

If Faslane is good enough for the Clyde estuary then it's good enough for the Thames estuary. Obviously the UK government would never locate this Doomsday weapon anywhere near the seat of national government. So they have put it just 25 miles from the centre of Glasgow and thereby show they regard the one million Glasgow population as entirely expendable. The Ukraine war is likely, ultimately, to go nuclear. This is because the US has a policy of deliberate provocation of the Kremlin Czar who is already irrational. From that point sheer logic determines that Faslane would be vaporised in the first ten minutes of the war, whereupon peace talks would likely commence. Too bad for Glasgow. Don't underestimate the evil to which humans can descend. The current implosion of the SNP will give the Scottish people the opportunity to re-think their priorities. Instead of Scottish independence (unlikely ever to materialise) the main policy should be the re-location of Faslane and the salvation of Glasgow. This is an achievable goal. I am not advocating a pacifist position however correct that might be. In order to make progress we must accept the human race in its present state of evolution. So I advocate the re-location of this Doomsday weapon to one of the sea lochs north of Skye. This would require building a new highway from Inverness through the mountains to the west coast. Which would open up the region to tourism.
